1 WIRELESS BACKHAUL NETWORK SOLUTIONS ENABLED BY CIENA S CES PORTFOLIO Ethernet backhaul of 2G, 3G and 4G data services Originally, mobile networks were designed to carry voice traffic over TDM networks, using E1 and T1 circuits to provide backhaul transport from the base station to the Mobile Switching Center (MSC). With the advent of mobile networks to support data services, the backhaul network evolved to accommodate increased data traffic by including ATM and IP. However, this backhaul network is now being overwhelmed by the rapid increase in bandwidth demand resulting from the introduction of newer 3G (HSPA+) and 4G (LTE and WiMax) technologies, and data-centric applications associated with the newest generation of mobile devices. The operational costs associated with traditional backhaul methods are rising faster than the revenue generated by the new data services, as shown in Figure 1. Benefits > Delivers high-bandwidth wireless backhaul solutions with lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) > Features flexibility, deployability, scalability, and manageability for the entire backhaul network > Provides carrier-grade OAM and standards-based protection for enhanced reliability > Enables Ethernet access over fiber and microwave architectures > Supports Ethernet and legacy TDM, S/SDH, and ATM services across the Ethernet-based backhaul network > Offers multiple protection options powered by RSTP, PBB-TE, MPLS/H-VPLS, or G.8032 Ethernet Rings Voice centric Traffic Cost Revenue Voice centric Traffic Ethernet allows you to bend the cost curve Revenue Cost > Provides Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588v2 to ensure clock accuracy and recovery over multi-hop paths > Automates provisioning, monitoring, and service visualization Data centric Data centric Source: Unstrung Insider Expected future cost structure Figure 1. Revenue generation versus traffic demand in the backhaul network As a result, mobile operators must reduce the cost-per-bit of data transport in the backhaul network while continuing to provide greater bandwidth for new high-speed data services, ensure voice quality, maintain carrier-grade Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM), and provide circuit-like resilience. Carrier Ethernet technology provides a solution to these backhaul problems. However, finding a way to maximize the value of Carrier Ethernet for successful backhaul services has remained a challenge. The LE-311v includes 24 10/100 Mb/s (RJ-45) ports and four 1 Gb/s optical *Denotes feature available in a future release. 3
4 To address the common challenge of transporting legacy services from cell site to Mobile Switch Center, Ciena offers the 3180, 3181 and 3190 Multiservice Delivery Switches. These switches provide Pseudowire Emulation (PWE) services for TDM (T1/E1), SONET/SDH, ATM, and Ethernet access traffic, offering legacy on-ramp services over Packet-Switched Networks (PSNs) for mobile backhaul applications. The 3180 has 8 T1/E1 ports and 8 Ethernet access ports with 2 GbE SFP uplink or access ports. The 3181 has the same number of Ethernet access and uplink ports, but provides 16 T1/E1 access ports. The 3190 offers industry-leading scalability with 84 Gb/s switching capacity and a dense mixture of 10GbE, 1GbE, T1/ E1, OC-3/STM-1; OC-12/STM-4, and OC48/STM-16 interfaces. These switches provide Ethernet access (10/100/1000), Structure Agnostic TDM access (T1/E1 - SAToP), Structure Aware TDM access (nxds0/e0 CESoPSN) on the 3180 and 3181, ATM/IMA access (nxt1/e1), or CEP (S/SDH tranport) with full support of the IETF s Pseudowire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3) architecture over Ethernet and MPLS networks. This allows traditional TDM, ATM, and native Ethernet traffic to be carried over metro backhaul networks. Metro Edge Aggregation As shown in Figure 4, the CES portfolio also provides backhaul service aggregation switching solutions including the 5140, 5150, 5305, and 5410 Service Aggregation Switches. Indoor Temp. Hardened 100M/1GbE 1GbE/10GbE 1GbE/10GbE/100GbE Figure 4. Ciena s service aggregation switches for mobile backhaul The CES portfolio includes Ciena s 5140 and 5150, which provide for temperature-hardened (-40 C to +65 C) first stage aggregation. This capability makes the 5140 and 5150 among the first high-capacity Carrier Ethernet aggregation systems that can be installed in unconditioned outside plant cabinets, opening up possibilities for a whole new set of network backhaul topologies. This flexibility is valuable for extending aggregation further into the backhaul network to take advantage of Ethernet s natural statistical multiplexing behavior and reduce bandwidth demand. The 5140 features a high-capacity 24 Gb/s switching fabric with 24 GbE ports, and provides both SFP and RJ-45 connectors for each of the 24 user ports. The 5150 extends the attributes of the 5140 into 10GbE aggregation featuring a high-capacity 88 Gb/s switching fabric with 48 GbE ports via SFP and 4 10GbE uplink or access ports via XFP. The 5150 supports SynchE and 1588v2 to ensure accurate and high-quality clock recovery. The 5305 is a modular service aggregation switch optimized for backhaul, enabling both high-density GbE connectivity to the towers and high-performance 10GbE uplinks to the service provider s mobile core. The 5305 features a state-of-the-art design that delivers sophisticated QoS capabilities, superior VLAN and virtual switching functions, and robust management and performance monitoring features. The 5305 has the ability to bridge between PBB-TE and MPLS, allowing operators to gain the economics and simplicity of Layer 2 in the access network, while protecting existing MPLS investments in the aggregation or core network. The 5305 incorporates the latest innovations in Ethernet switching technology and control plane protocols, and Carrier Ethernet OAM mechanisms. The 5305 utilizes high-performance programmable processors to deliver new features and functionality through simplified software upgrades, with minimal disruption to customer traffic. This programmable architecture keeps capital and operating costs to a minimum while providing a flexible platform that maximizes revenue potential. Ciena s 5410 is a next-generation Carrier Ethernet/MPLS service aggregation platform that provides terabit switching capacity, massive service scalability, carrier-class resiliency, and a cutting-edge feature set. It supports advanced QoS, OAM, and advanced L2VPN capabilities that enable service providers to keep pace with continually increasing demand for bandwidth capacity and service density required in mobile backhaul aggregation networks. Its system hardware includes all the elements required for Synchronous Ethernet, enabling the delivery and distribution of network-synchronized timing for mobile backhaul. The 5410 and 5305 are the only Carrier Ethernet switches in the industry to support interworking between Q-in-Q VLANs, MPLS/VPLS/H-VPLS, and PBB/ PBB-TE encapsulation formats. By enabling both Ethernet and MPLS/VPN connectivity services, Ciena s 5410 supports interworking scenarios that foster complete service flexibility and maximum optimization of network resources. 4
5 Synchronization As packet-based mobile backhaul networks have continued to evolve to support circuit-like data services and legacy service transport, Carrier Ethernet technologies have evolved to address the maintenance of highly accurate synchronization across the packet network. A number of technologies including adaptive clock recovery, IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol, and Synchronous Ethernet have emerged to support this goal. The 3180, 3181, 3190, 3930, 3931 and 5150 meet the requirements of synchronous packet-based backhaul, supporting Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588v2. Additionally, the 3180, 3181 and 3190 provide Adaptive Clock Recovery and Line and BITS timing to ensure high-quality initiation and reliable transport of synchronous services. Resiliency and Protection Network resilience and protection are critical to applications based on Carrier Ethernet services, and Ciena s CES portfolio provides a full featured suite required for resilience and protection of wireless backhaul traffic. The CES portfolio also enables operators to select their preferred mechanism of protection schemes powered by RSTP, PBB-TE, MPLS/H-VPLS and/or ITU-T G.8032 Ethernet Rings. Each of these mechanisms can be used to determine primary and recovery paths through the network once a fault is detected. In addition, the protection schemes offer tiered resiliency, so network disruptions are isolated to local segments of the network, minimizing their impact and providing network scalability. The 5305 and 5410 also support the ability to single- or dual-home protection paths. Dual-homed protection ensures that no single point of failure exists anywhere in the Ethernet backhaul network. G.8032 provides deterministic 50ms protection switching around Ethernet ring topologies enabling operators to deliver carrier-grade Ethernet services with the resiliency capabilities of legacy SONET/SDH infrastructure without the associated costs. OAM and SLAs Ciena s product portfolio has a strong Operations Administration and Maintenance (OAM) feature suite providing comprehensive link, service and network monitoring and performance metrics. OAM features available today include: > IEEE 802.1ag Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) > IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) > IEEE 802.1AB Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) > ITU-T Y.1731 Performance Monitoring: Delay, Jitter, Loss > IETF RFC 5618 TWAMP Sender & Responder for L3 SLA Monitoring > Performance Benchmarking Test Generation and Reflection (RFC 2544) These protocols are useful for detecting, verifying, and isolating Ethernet connection failures and they offer standardsbased frameworks to protect services, while providing robust, predictable, and rapid recovery. Ciena s access products help mobile operators significantly reduce OPEX through their integrated RFC 2544 Performance Benchmarking capabilities. Most mobile operators and end-customers require performance testing and characterization prior to service acceptance. These tests are typically performed by technicians using expensive handheld test sets, with tests running over a significant period of time. This inefficient process adds delays and increases OPEX. Ciena s low-touch turn-up features simplify service testing and activation by using integrated RFC 2544 capabilities to remotely run various performance tests from the NOC, eliminating the costs related to deploying on-site service personnel, and ensuring consistent, reproducible test reports required for service acceptance. Ciena s integrated RFC 2544 capability also allows mobile operators to respond quickly and efficiently to service disruptions and eliminate associated costly truck rolls. Ciena s Carrier Ethernet backhaul solutions incorporate the latest innovations in Ethernet switching technology, control plane protocols, encapsulation techniques, QoS capabilities, and OAM mechanisms. This combination enables the service provider to deliver carrier grade mobile backhaul services backed up by verifiable Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with rigorous performance and availability guarantees. It also gives service providers the ability to customize and differentiate their service offerings, ensuring solid customer satisfaction and loyalty. Integrated Network and Service Management The Ethernet Service Manager is an integral part of Ciena s backhaul solution. ESM is a carrier-grade, automated service activation, creation, and management platform for Ciena s service delivery and aggregation switches. The ESM enables subscriber-managed services and allows users to build and deploy large-scale Carrier Ethernet networks efficiently; cut TCO; reduce time to market for new services; accelerate service revenue; maximize service availability; assure service quality; and leverage existing systems. The ESM is built on a low-touch, service-oriented architecture that transparently handles all the complexities and details of deploying, delivering, and sustaining True Carrier Ethernet services. This comprehensive suite of integrated software tools 5
