The SBG6580 is equipped with a next-generation n Wi-Fi access point n: n, the most current superset of the widely-used Wi-Fi standard utilized by consumers in more than 100 million deployed PCs and mobile devices, is a compelling networking option for operators and consumers. The SBG6580 s n integrated access point eliminates the need for wires altogether, enabling users to easily wirelessly network all of their a/b/g/n equipped devices. User-friendly Installation Motorola s integrated SURFboard solutions include stateful firewall protection and stateof-the-art Wi-Fi network security. They are also shipped with a CD-ROM including Motorola s Wi-Fi installation wizard an easy-to-use secure Wi-Fi network setup and connection tool that seamlessly configures a secure Wi-Fi connection on a user s machine. When the Wi-Fi wizard is finished, a secure WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access)-encrypted Wi-Fi connection is established to the gateway, protecting the user s machine from hacker attacks. Motorola s enhanced embedded software facilitates Wi-Fi deployments with high levels of quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction, with low operational and support costs for the MSO. 1 GHz LPF Dual Radio Operation: The SBG6580 is configured with radio technology that offers b/g at 2.4 GHz and n at 5 GHz to support maximum LAN flexibility. Built-In Security The SBG6580 is equipped with a number of security features to offer consumers peace of mind, including: Firewall with DoS protection and intrusion prevention DHCP, NAT, VPN endpoint, VPN tunneling Wi-Fi security WEP/WPA/WPA2 with easy setup wizard User-friendly, secure mobile pairing Wi-Fi Wizard removes end-user complexity for secure PC client setup Pushbutton configuration for WPS compliant clients Internal MoCA Reject Filter This feature eliminates the possibility for MoCA interference to the IP Signals with the implementation of an internal 1 GHz low pass filter. This reduces both the complexity and the cost of installing an external filter. MoCA is being implemented by Cable Operators as a means to transport video signals to other devices on the network. These signals can interfere with the signal reception by the Gateway. The filter removes the interference before it disrupts IP data. You can verify the presence of the filter by a stamped indication on the rear panel that reads 1 GHz LPF. This filter will not interfere with any of the IP traffic for which the Gateway is used. Service Assurance Supporting the Wi-Fi home network is a new challenge for the cable industry. 6 SURFboard SBG6580 Wi-Fi Cable Modem Gateway Troubleshooting Before calling for technical support, try restarting your cable modem gateway by unplugging the power cord, waiting five seconds, and then plugging it back in again. The Problem The Solution Power icon is not visible Check that your cable modem gateway is plugged into a live electrical outlet that is not controlled by a light switch. Cannot connect to Wireless Network Cannot receive or send data First, check if Wireless icon is on. Then, run the Wi-Fi Installation wizard on the SBG6580 Installation CD to reconnect to the network. See the Troubleshooting section in the User Guide for more information. Check that the coaxial cable is properly connected to your cable modem gateway and cable outlet or splitter. Hand-tighten, if necessary. Check that the Ethernet cable is properly connected to your cable modem gateway and computer. Check the IP address by following the steps in Verifying the IP Address in the User Guide. For UNIX or Linux computers, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed to open the User Guide. Call your service provider if you need an IP address. Verify that the Power icon is visible on the front panel. See Product Overview - Front Panel in the User Guide on the SBG6580 Installation CD for more information. There are three SBG6580 Connection Video Tutorials available if you need additional help setting up your gateway. You can access the videos online at the Motorola Support website, (follow the prompts) or from your mobile device; just text SBG6580 to or scan the QR code: For information on advanced wireless network configurations, see the SBG6580 User Guide which is available online at the Motorola Support website. Software License & Warranty Card SBG6580 Installation CD-ROM Quick Startup Guide IMPORTANT! You must have a live broadband cable connection installed before starting your gateway installation. If you do not, please contact a service provider for assistance. When contacting your service provider, you may be asked for the HFC MAC ID, Serial number, and Model number of your gateway. This information is available on the product label located on the bottom of the gateway and also on page 4 of this guide. Please visit for FAQs and additional product documentation. 8 Connecting Your Gateway Before starting, make sure your computer is powered OFF. Note: You may need additional items not included with your gateway (such as a coaxial cable or RF splitter) to complete your gateway installation. 1 Connect the coaxial cable to a cable wall outlet (or cable splitter) and your gateway. Hand-tighten each connector. 2 Plug the power cord into your gateway and an electrical outlet. This will power ON your gateway. 3 Connect the Ethernet cable to any Ethernet port on your gateway and then connect the other end to the Ethernet port on your computer. Testing Your Gateway Connections 1. Power ON your computer and log in. During the initial startup, the gateway Power, Receive, and Send LEDs will FLASH. Afterwards, check that the LEDs are lit SOLID. 2. Contact your service provider to activate (provision) your gateway. Note: Your service provider may allow for automatic activation which will automatically launch a special website when you open a web browser. If so, continue with step To test your gateway connection, open a web browser on your computer, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari. Type a valid URL ( in the address bar and then click or press Enter. If the web page did not open, please contact your service provider for assistance. Front Panel LEDs During startup, the front panel LEDs will light up in sequential order to indicate the registration process. LEDs will flash during registration. If an LED did not light up, contact your service provider for assistance. 2 Setting Up a Wireless Network Connection Note: Before setting up a wireless network connection, your gateway and computer must have access to a broadband or high-speed Internet service. To configure your wireless network name (SSID) and security settings, and other network parameters, you must access the gateway configuration URL: type in your browser window. See the SBG6580 User Guide for more information. Choose one of the following options to set up your wireless network connection. When done, continue with Testing Your Wireless Network Connection. A Computer Wireless Network Options B SBG6580 Installation Wizard on CD C WPS Pairing Button A Changing Your Computer Wireless Network Options Note: The steps for setting up a wireless network may differ slightly depending on the operating system installed on your computer. The following steps apply for Windows XP. 1. From Windows taskbar, click Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections, Network Connections, Wireless Network Connection to open Wireless Network Connection window. 2. Scroll down and select the SBG6580 wireless network name (SSID is listed on the SBG6580 product label). Click the MOTOROLA wireless network name and then click Connect. 3. Enter Network key code in the Network key & Confirm network key fields (listed as Wi-Fi Security Key on the SBG6580 product label). 4. Click Connect to complete the wireless network connection. Connected status should display. 5. Close Wireless Network Connection window. 3 B Running the SBG6580 Installation Wizard 1. Insert SBG6580 Installation Assistant CD into CD-ROM drive. 2. Follow the prompts to accept the License Agreement. 3. Locate CD ROM Passcode on gateway product label, then click Next. 4. Select Launch Wi-Fi Assistant and follow the prompts to set up your wireless connection. 5. Upon completion, click Finish to exit the wizard. C Using the WPS Pairing Button To use WPS, your computer hardware must support WPS and have WPA security compatibility. This option will automatically configure the SSID wireless network name and Wi-Fi Security Key to connect your gateway and other WPS-enabled devices to a wireless network. 1. Power ON your gateway and other WPS-enabled devices that you want to connect to the wireless network. 2. Press the WPS button on the SBG6580 front panel. 3. Press the WPS button on your WPS-enabled computer or other device. Repeat for each additional wireless device. Testing Your Wireless Network Connection 1. If connected, disconnect the Ethernet cable from your gateway and computer. 2. Open a web browser on your computer. 3. Type a valid URL (for example, in the address bar, and then click or press Enter. If the web page did not open, please contact your service provider for assistance.
