1 August 13, 2018 Toshiba Laptop Components Classified as Requiring Selective Treatment Toshiba Client Solutions Canada Ltd. would like to communicate the method of identifying and removing components contained in Toshiba notebook products, including but not limited to the Toshiba Satellite Pro A40-C PS463C model, that (potentially) contain hazardous materials. Hazardous materials are those materials defined under Annex II of the European WEEE Directive, Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). All of the instructions provided within this letter can be reviewed in greater detail within the Toshiba Satellite Pro A40-C/Tecra A40-C Series Maintenance Manual. Lithium Ion Battery Please refer to the information below for instructions regarding the identification and removal of the lithium ion battery. Further maintenance instructions can be found in section 4.10 (page 4-9 to 4-10) of the Toshiba Satellite Pro A40-C/Tecra A40-C Series Maintenance Manual. No tools are required in order to remove this component. Once removed, these components should be recycled as per local requirements. Removing the LCD Unit Please refer to the information below for instructions regarding the identification and removal of the LCD unit. Please refer to the information listed in section 4.27 (page 4-39 to 4-42) of the Toshiba Satellite Pro A40- C/Tecra A40-C Series Maintenance Manual. No tools are required in order to remove this component. Once removed, these components should be recycled as per local requirements. The following tools and equipment are required for disassembly and assembly of the components noted below: One Philips screwdriver with type 0 bit (for S-THIN HEAD screws) One Philips screwdriver with type 1 bit (for screws other than above) Tweezers (for lifting screws) 1

4 Removing the Cover Assembly and Base Assembly The cover assembly and base assembly will need to be removed in order to access the components listed below. Please refer to the information below and the instructions provided in section 4.11 (page 4-10 to 4-11) of the Toshiba Satellite Pro A40-C/Tecra A40-C Series Maintenance Manual. The following tools and equipment are required for disassembly and assembly of the components noted below: One Philips screwdriver with type 0 bit (for S-THIN HEAD screws) One Philips screwdriver with type 1 bit (for screws other than above) One flat-blade screwdriver (for removing the CPU) Tweezers (for lifting screws) 4

5 RTC Battery Please refer to the information below for instructions regarding the identification and removal of the RTC battery. Please refer to the information listed in section 4.18 (page 4-21 to 4-22) of the Toshiba Satellite Pro A40-C/Tecra A40-C Series Maintenance Manual. No tools are required in order to remove this component. Once removed, these components should be recycled as per local requirements. Printed Circuit / Wiring Boards (PCB/PWB) Although it has been determined that printed circuit/wiring boards (PCB/PWB) contained within Toshiba notebooks do not contain any hazardous substances as defined under Annex II of the European WEEE Directive (2002/96/EC), these components should be segregated and sent to smelters for the recovery of precious metals. Commonly available tools can be utilized in order to access and remove this component. PCB /PWBs contained in the Toshiba Satellite Pro A40-C and removal instructions are provided in detail below. 5

6 USB/Audio/SD Board Please refer to the information below for instructions regarding the identification and removal of the USB/Audio/SD Board. Please refer to the information listed in section 4.17 (page 4-19 to 4-20) of the Toshiba Satellite Pro A40-C/Tecra A40-C Series Maintenance Manual. Once removed, these components should be recycled as per local requirements. 6

7 System Board Please refer to the information below for instructions regarding the identification and removal of the System Board. Please refer to the information listed in section 4.25 (page 4-35 to 4-36) of the Toshiba Satellite Pro A40-C/Tecra A40-C Series Maintenance Manual. One Philips screwdriver with type 1 bit will be required to remove the screws indicated in the locations below. Once removed, these components should be recycled as per local requirements. 7

8 LED/TP/RTC Board Please refer to the information below for instructions regarding the identification and removal of the LED/TP/RTC Board. Please refer to the information listed in section 4.16 (page 4-17 to 4-18) of the Toshiba Satellite Pro A40-C/Tecra A40-C Series Maintenance Manual. Once removed, these components should be recycled as per local requirements. 8

9 AC Adapter, External cables provided with the AC adapter and USB cables The AC adapter as well as all external cables provided with the notebook including the AC adapter cables and USB cables should be segregated and sent for shredding. The following components contained within the AC adapter potentially contain hazardous substances and require special handling: Printed Circuit Board >10 cm 2 Capacitor >25 mm in height Photos of the AC adapter and the components noted above are included below.
