4 2 Introduction The FluxGage LED luminaire system measures total flux, color parameters and flicker of LED luminaires. The FluxGage measures in 2 pi geometry. 2.1 Operation principle The FluxGage measures by collecting light using photovoltaic cells. Unlike an integrating sphere, the FluxGage does not rely on multiple reflections and its interior is black. Light from the DUT hits the interior walls of the FluxGage, gets absorbed and nearly no light bounces back again. This greatly reduces the effect of the DUT s size and shape on the measurement. An integrated spectrometer is used to measure color parameters (CCT, CRI, Duv, and CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinate), and to translate the current produced by the photovoltaics into lumens. A fast photodiode sensor is used to measure flicker. An integrated temperature sensor and fans control the temperature of the FluxGage. 9 4 Mechanical and Electrical Installation 4.1 Unpacking Place the FluxGage box on a flat surface. Open the box and remove the top piece of foam. Remove two side pieces of foam. Reach into the clearance left by the two pieces and lift the FluxGage from the box. FluxGage User Manual 9

10 4.2 Installation The FluxGage can be operated facing up or down. Allow 200mm (8 ) clearance for the fans. Connect the power supply to the mains and to the DC input. The power plug is secured by turning it half turn clockwise. Connect the PC to the USB port. The inner surfaces can be cleaned with a damp cloth or clean compressed air. Solvents should not be used. Warning. The FluxGage is a heavy object which can cause injury or death if falls on a person. Take proper precautions. FluxGage User Manual 10

16 6 Using the FluxGage The DUT should be placed over the opening of the FluxGage and centered. The DUT can be supported by an adapter plate secured to top surface of the FluxGage using the ¼-20 threads. The adapter plate should have an opening cut out to allow light from the DUT to reach the FluxGage. Taking measurements with FluxGage: Step 1. AutoSet Place the DUT over the FluxGage and turn it on. Press Autoset. The FluxGage will automatically set the integration time of the spectrometer and other internal settings. Step 2. Background Turn the DUT off. Press Background. The FluxGage will measure the background signal of the spectrometer and the solar panel current meter. These will be subtracted from the actual measurement. Do not move the DUT after the background measurement. The FluxGage will start measuring immediately after the background measurement is done. Step 3. Measurement Turn the DUT on. The FluxGage will now measure and display correct results. FluxGage User Manual 16

19 7.2 Control Parameters Autoset Autoset sets the optimal spectrometer integration time and other internal settings by measuring the incoming light from a DUT Background Background should be done after Autoset with the DUT in place and turned off. The FluxGage stores the background value of the spectrometer and later subtracts it from the actual measurement Averages Adding averaging will improve the stability of the measurement. If the integration time multiplied by the number of averages exceeds 500ms, the photovoltaics and photodiode will also increase their measurement time and improve their stability Abort The abort button resets the current measurement and starts a new one. This is useful if the current measurement take a long time, for example due to many averages More settings The more setting button extends the SW window to reveal more options described in the next section. 20 7.3 Optimization Factors Optimization factors can improve the accuracy of the total flux measurement. The performance of the FluxGage system was optically modeled for various luminaire sizes and illumination beam angles, and optimization factors adjust the total flux measurement accordingly. 21 Illumination Angle Enter the illumination beam angle in [ deg] 7.4 Synchronized Measurement This option is not available with this version of FluxGage 7.5 Indicators Integration time This is the integration time of the spectrometer. It should be adjusted such that over exposure and under exposure indicators are off. The photovoltaics and photodiode collect light for 500ms minimum Out of range The out of range warning will turn on in these cases: Amount of light is too high or too low for the current settings and Autoset and Background should be repeated. Flux level exceed 40,000 lumen Temperature The FluxGage has an internal temperature sensor and 4 fans which turn on automatically to keep a stable temperature. If for some reason, such as failure of the fans, the FluxGage is overheating, the temperature warning indicator will turn on. In this case, the FluxGage should be turned off and the DUT should be removed to allow the FluxGage to cool down. 7.6 Measured Parameters Total Flux [lumens] Total luminous flux in lumens CCT Correlated color temperature (CCT) in [ K] is calculated from the measured spectrum CRI CRI is calculated from the measured spectrum. 22 7.6.4 Duv Distance to the black body curve in the CIE1960 UV color space Chromaticity Chromaticity coordinates in the CIE 1931 color space Percent Flicker and flicker factor FluxGage has a fast photodiode detector which samples at 3000Hz. The percent flicker and flicker factor calculations are explained in the following figure FluxGage User Manual 22

23 7.7 Flicker Screen The flicker percent and flicker index displayed in the main screen are calculated from the signal obtained directly from the photodiode sensor. The flicker screen displays flicker percent and flicker index calculated from the photodiode data after filtering at the bandwidth specified by the user. This is useful to evaluate compliance with certain flicker standards. 24 7.8 CRI screen The CRI screen shows the individual CRI values R1-R15 and the average value CRI. FluxGage User Manual 24

25 7.9 CIE 1931 Chromaticity The CIE 1931 chromaticity window shows the chromaticity coordinates. FluxGage User Manual 25

26 7.10 Spectrum Screen The spectrum is displayed from 400nm to 800mn in [W/nm] units. The spectrum can be saved to a text file by clicking over the disk icon. FluxGage User Manual 26

27 7.11 PAR screen PAR is measured in [µmol/s], also called PPF units. One [mol/s] is defined as Avogadro s number of photons per second. There are 3 user defined wavelength ranges, and the PAR is measured and displayed for each. FluxGage User Manual 27

30 7.13 Data save Click on file and save to reach this screen. This screen is used to save the current measurement data to a tab delimited test file. 31 7.14 Save to Excel Enter operator and product details for reference. Click on the folder icon in the 'file name' part of the screen Select an existing file or type a new file name Click on 'add to excel' FluxGage User Manual 31

32 7.15 Report Generator Click on file and on report. The report window will open. Enter information on the operator, model, part number, serial number. Enter the luminaire ratings: flux, power, voltage, beam angle, CCT. Enter actual electrical parameters as measured: power, power factor. Click on the disk icon to generate and save the report. The report contains all the above information, measure data and calculated efficacy: FluxGage User Manual 32

36 8 Calibration 8.1 Calibration of the spectrum measurement and the total flux measurement For this calibration an LED calibration source is needed. A tungsten lamp cannot be used because its IR radiation is detected by the solar panels but not by the spectrometer. Follow these steps: To calibrate the FluxGage click Calibration on the top banner. Position the calibration source over the FluxGage. In the setting area, enter the total luminous flux of the calibration source in the luminous flux box. Click Open Light File and select the spectral calibration file of the calibration source. FluxGage User Manual 36

37 If the file is loaded correctly, the calibration file valid indicator will turn green. Turn the calibration source on. Press Autoset and wait for the operation to complete. In the setting area, select 30 averages. Turn off the calibration source. Press Store Dark and wait for the operation to complete. Turn the calibration source on and allow enough time to reach thermal stabilization (~30minutes). Press Calibrate and wait for the operation to complete. At the top of the screen, the measured flux of the calibration source will appear. It should match the value entered in the settings area. Click on the top right corner to exit the window. 8.2 Calibration of the total flux measurement This calibration can be done using an LED source with a known total luminous flux without calibrating the spectrometer. Follow these steps: To calibrate the FluxGage click Calibration on the top banner. Position the calibration source over the FluxGage. In the setting area, enter the total luminous flux of the calibration source in the luminous flux box Turn the calibration source on. Press Autoset and wait for the operation to complete. In the setting area, select 30 averages. Turn off the calibration source. Press Store Dark and wait for the operation to complete. Turn the calibration source on and allow enough time to reach thermal stabilization (~30minutes). Press Calibrate and wait for the operation to complete. At the top of the screen, the measured flux of the calibration source will appear. It should match the value entered in the settings area. Click on the top right corner to exit the window. 8.3 Calibration of the spectrometer only This calibration can be done with a LED or tungsten lamp. The spectrum incident on the diffuser calibrates the spectrometer. Follow these steps: To calibrate the FluxGage click Calibration on the top banner. Position the calibration source over the FluxGage. FluxGage User Manual 37

38 In the setting area, enter 0 in the luminous flux box Click Open Light File and select the spectral calibration file of the calibration source. If the file is loaded correctly, the calibration file valid indicator will turn green. Turn the calibration source on. Press Autoset and wait for the operation to complete. In the setting area, select 30 averages. Turn off the calibration source. Press Store Dark and wait for the operation to complete. Click on the top right corner to exit the window. 8.4 Back up calibration In addition to the working calibration there is a backup calibration. The backup calibration can be retrieved by pressing restore back up calibration. This will copy the backup calibration into the working calibration. The backup calibration can be overwritten by pressing over write back up calibration. This should be done when the calibration is done with an Ophir certified calibration unit.
