4 1 Notes on the operating manual 1 Notes on the operating manual 1.1 General Thank you for choosing a sensor from the SONOFLOW CO.55 series. This manual forms part of the sensor and should therefore be stored in its immediate vicinity where it can be accessed by all operators at any time. It contains all the information needed to ensure proper and efficient use, along with all the instructions to ensure safe operation of the SONOFLOW CO Symbols used Hazards or special information are indicated in the following ways: Warning! This information warns of possible personal injury and damage to property. Caution! This information warns of possible damage to property. 5 2 Safety 2 Safety 2.1 Safety information Sensors of the SONOFLOW CO.55 series are state of the art products and comply with applicable safety regulations. All sensors are factory tested and delivered in a safe condition for operation. The following safety instructions apply: Warning! Incorrect installation and use of SONOFLOW CO.55 sensors and their components can present a hazard for the user. The plant operator is responsible for the legal compliance of the sensor installation and documentation. The sensors may only be operated if all of the conditions specified in the technical data are adhered to. The sensors may only be exposed to a minimal risk of mechanical damage. In other cases, the sensors must be protected against mechanical influences. If there is visible damage, the sensors must be taken out of operation immediately. 2.2 User qualifications Warning! The SONOFLOW CO.55 may only be installed and operated by users who have read and understood the entire operating manual. SONOFLOW CO.55 5

6 3 Sensor description 3 Sensor description 3.1 Designated use Sensors of the SONOFLOW CO.55 series are designed as clamp-on sensors and are used to measure the flow rate of liquids in tubes of various diameters. They are intended as components to be integrated into devices and machines. The measuring method used is suitable for all sound-transparent, low-viscosity liquids. To ensure an undistorted measuring result, the tube must fit flexibly into the measuring channel. PVC and silicone tubes are suitable; fabric tubes are unsuitable. Any use other than the designated use is prohibited and can result in personal injury or damage to property. SONOTEC Ultraschallsensorik Halle GmbH accepts no liability for damage, including to third parties, caused by improper handling of the sensors. 3.2 Measuring method and functioning The sound wave transit time in and against the direction of flow is measured using ultrasound. Sound waves pass diagonally through the tube along two measuring paths. The flow rate is determined from the difference in transit times and the measuring cell geometry. Using suitable evaluation algorithms, several measurements are recorded before being further processed. The flow rate is indicated by a current output of 0/ ma serving as the process interface. 3.3 Construction The exact design of the sensors depends above all on the inner and outer tube diameter and the tube hardness. 8 4 Installation 4 Installation The SONOFLOW CO.55 is intended as a component to be integrated into devices and machines. 4.1 Attaching the SONOFLOW CO.55 Caution! If the tube is bent too sharply close to the sensor, the flow behavior of liquids changes and the sensor supplies no or incorrect measurement results. During installation, make sure that any bend in the tube does not have less than the minimum radius close to the sensor (see table). Bends in the tube before and after the sensor must not have less than the specified radius (approx. 10 x outer diameter of tube): Specification Outer Ø Tube [mm] Bending radius [mm] CO.55/ > 40 CO.55/ > 65 CO.55/ > 140 Table 2: Minimum bending radius The sensor can be operated hanging from the tube (see chapter 5) or it can be screwed to a support. There are 4 holes on the back of the sensor for this purpose. So the current output can be operated alternatively as pulse output. SONOFLOW CO.55 9

10 5 Operating the SONOFLOW CO.55 5 Operating the SONOFLOW CO Operating information Warning! Using the SONOFLOW CO.55 incorrectly can be dangerous. The sensor and the associated tube must be clean and intact during operation. Do not use tools or sharp objects to place the tube in the measuring channel. Caution! If the tube is altered (bent, stretched) the sensor may produce no or incorrect measurement results. Insert the tube whilst ensuring that the sensor is far enough away from bends (Table 2: Minimum bending radius). When fitting a tube with a small diameter, take care not to pull on it. The sensor must be operated under conditions (of temperature, weight) which allow the tube to retain its shape. 5.2 Inserting the tube 1. Place the tube in the measuring channel. Press the tube by hand until it meets the bottom of the channel, being careful not to pull on the tube. 2. Fix the tube by closing the hinged cover until you feel it snap into place. The sensor is now ready for use. In case of an error the sensor will output the defined signal. 5.3 Monitoring during operation If there is visible damage, the SONOFLOW CO.55 must be taken out of operation immediately. 11 6 Cleaning and disinfection 7 Troubleshooting and maintenance 6 Cleaning and disinfection Caution! Incorrect cleaning of the SONOFLOW CO.55 and its components can present a hazard for the user. It must not be cleaned in a steam sterilizer or with hot steam in general with acetone by immersion in solvents or other liquids The sensor should be cleaned using standard commercial cleaning agents. Standard commercial spray disinfectants should be used for disinfection. 7 Troubleshooting and maintenance The error output can be customized using the SONOFLOW Monitor (optional accessory), the default values being as follows: Error Cause Remedy The sensor outputs 0 ma The sensor outputs 2 ma Device error Measurement error, inadequate acoustic contact Contact manufacturer Check tube to see if measurement liquid is present Check that the cover is properly closed Table 5: Troubleshooting The SONOFLOW CO.55 is practically maintenance free.
