1 Automation, Protection, Switching Applications Gas-Free, Oil-Free, Maintenance-Free Easy Handling, Easy Installation

2 Cooper Power Systems introduces a revolution in distribution switchgear. The Kyle NOVA utilizes advanced polymer and vacuum technologies to increase value for distribution systems. Kyle has combined solid cycloaliphatic-epoxy polymer-encapsulated vacuum interrupters with a reliable, lightweight operating mechanism that utilizes a magnetic actuator to provide a lifetime of trouble-free operation. This state-of-the-art design completely replaces liquid, foam, and gas dielectric media. NOVA reclosers, capacitor switches, and sectionalizers are the maintenance-free alternatives in distribution system protection. The Shape of Things to Come. THE KYLE NOVA TECHNOLOGY Superior Solid Insulation Provides Maintenance-Free and Environmentally Safe Operation The key to the NOVA advantage is the successful combination of two technologies: cycloaliphatic-epoxy encapsulation and the high-performance Kyle vacuum interrupter. Solid dielectric insulation eliminates the need for insulating gas, foam, or liquid, thereby greatly reducing life-cycle maintenance costs. There is no longer the need to monitor SF6 gas pressure or oil levels, to filter or replenish the dielectric, to take special precautions when handling the dielectric during maintenance, or to worry about environmental regulations regarding disposal of toxic or environmentally unfriendly materials. Kyle Advances Filled Epoxy Design for Outdoor Applications Filled epoxy casting systems have been successfully utilized as insulating material in high- and low-voltage indoor applications for over 35 years. Recent material advancements include durable environmental properties that enhance epoxy success for outdoor applications. State-of-the-art manufacturing techniques also bring key improvements in absorption of elastic energy and resistance to cracking and crack propagation. NOVA Cycloaliphatic Epoxy Advantages Surface Tracking NOVA s exceptional ability to resist electrical tracking reduces both flashovers and the associated cost of repairs. Results of the industry-standard incline plane test (per ASTM D2303) revealed that cycloaliphatic epoxy is 50 percent more resistant to tracking than polyurethane. In addition, independent testing by Arizona State University (per IEC 815) confirmed that NOVA cycloaliphatic epoxy is highly resistant to contaminants and resisted tracking and flashovers under extreme pollution levels. Hydrophobicity NOVA cycloaliphatic epoxy maintains excellent hydrophobicity (a property characterized by water beading into isolated drops) and is highly resistant to moisture absorption. Hydrophobicity prevents continuous sheets of water from forming leakage current paths which, when heated by continuous flow, create a dry band path that deteriorates the creepage withstand level. Ultraviolet Resistance NOVA cycloaliphatic epoxy resists damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. Over 30 years of proven experience of cycloaliphatic epoxy in harsh climates confirms that NOVA maintains a smooth, self-cleansing, unblemished surface with low-adhesion to contaminants when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Tensile Strength NOVA modules are tough and non-fragmenting as they possess outstanding tensile and flexural strength characteristics. An evincing 12-gauge-shotgun test displays the NOVA s non-fragmenting property and ability to thwart vandalism. Combining advanced vacuum technology; a sophisticated solid epoxy insulation system; and a proprietary, dielectrically sound, active component, Cooper Power Systems now provides a non-oil, non-gas, and non-foam, solid insulation system destined to be......the Shape of Things to Come. 2

3 AXIAL-MAGNETIC FIELD VACUUM INTERRUPTION Kyle Leads Vacuum Technology Kyle revolutionized the protection of high-voltage circuits with the first commercially successful recloser, the Kyle Type H. Today, many Kyle reclosers incorporate vacuum technologies which expand the durability and extend the application base for vacuum products. Kyle s constant development achievements represent a detailed understanding of arc control, thermal loads, and contact erosion. Each is pivotal to the successful application of vacuum to solid dielectric systems. The patented axial-magnetic field vacuum interrupter, designed and manufactured by Kyle Distribution Switchgear, is the most advanced vacuum interrupter design in the world. Rely on Kyle NOVA vacuum interrupters to provide many years of dependable operation. Axial-Magnetic Design Provides fast, low-energy arc interruption Ensures long contact and interrupter life Experiences low mechanical stress while ensuring maximum operating safety Eliminates production of toxic byproducts HIGH-ALUMINA CERAMIC Designed for maximum life and long-term vacuum integrity. BELLOWS Permits full stroke for contact separation without affecting vacuum seal. CONTACT ASSEMBLY Copper alloy chosen for anti-welding and high-current interrupting capabilities. VAPOR SHIELD Kyle NOVA interrupters employ axial-magnetic contacts. Slots are machined into the contact support structure producing a coil that induces a magnetic field along the axis of the interrupter. This axial-magnetic field keeps the arc in an easier-to-interrupt diffuse mode, resulting in less arc power to be dissipated. Furthermore, Kyle s patented VSAM design uses the entire contact surface, resulting in far less contact erosion. Less power to dissipate means low thermal stress and longer life. Consequently, Kyle is uniquely qualified to encapsulate vacuum interrupters. World-Class Process Electrically, the heart of the interrupter is the contact material and structure. During the interruption of high current, the surface of the contacts can reach its melting temperature, liberating any residual gases or contaminants into the vacuum. At Kyle, high-purity copper and chromium disks are machined into contacts. After electro-polishing, parts are assembled in a contaminant-free Class 100 clean room, then loaded into a vacuum brazing furnace for final production. All processes are certified to ISO 9001 quality standards. Cooper Power Systems, Kyle Distribution Switchgear, manufactures the most advanced vacuum interrupter in the world. Superior to oil interruption and radial-magnetic field vacuum interruption (see duty cycle comparison below and IEEE /00), the patented axialmagnetic field Kyle vacuum interrupters provide the longest life of any vacuum interrupter in the industry. The Shape of Things to Come...NOVA. Kyle axial-magnetic field vacuum interrupter. Innovative Design Many vacuum interrupters employ radial-magnetic field contacts. These use slots that are machined into the contact structure to affect the direction of current flow during arc interruption in such a way as to induce a radial-magnetic field. This radial-magnetic field pushes the arc around the circumference of the contact, minimizing wear in any one spot. Though this method is sufficient for low and medium current density applications, higher current levels can cause significant contact erosion or shield burn-out. 4 View of operating mechanism with housing cover removed. NOVA Vacuum Interruption Vacuum interruption, used in NOVA reclosers, offers greatly enhanced contact life. A single break on each phase is accomplished by separating contacts inside the vacuum interrupter. All arcing is contained within the vacuum envelope. Low-energy arc interruption, provided by axial-magnetic field technology, results in far less mechanical shock, extending the recloser s mechanical life. Mechanism The Kyle NOVA switchgear meets and exceeds ANSI/IEEE C37.60, as it is designed for 10,000 operations. The mechanism is operated by a magnetic actuator, which uses a low-voltage power source for operation. A fully charged battery and trip and close capacitors provide interrupter operation upon loss of control power. This feature provides dead-line operation capability a requirement for many SCADA applications. NOVA Economics Kyle NOVA switchgear products are at the forefront of a revolution in conventional switchgear technology. Reinventing the methodology and expanding the options available to utility engineers and buyers, with solid insulation, encapsulation, vacuum interuption, and modular design with embedded current transformers, represent a significant techological leap. Total cost of ownership analysis is appropriate for full recognition of the total expense surrounding the application and life of equipment. Initial purchase cost is only one element, as installation, maintenance, malice, and disposal must also be considered during the equipment s useful life. NOVA switchgear is designed to eliminate or reduce many of these expenses through the combined use of advanced material technology, solid insulation, and lowheat-transfer vacuum interrupters. NOVA s innovative approach yields operational savings. No regular maintenance Durability to withstand acts of man and nature Gas-, oil-, foam-, and regulation-free Lightweight and installation friendly Advanced vacuum technology Standardization of switch/interrupter products used on utility distribution systems NOVA is not only a technological breakthrough, but a serious tool that brings true operational savings to the utility business unit. Quality The quality system of the manufacturing facility is independently certified to meet the following standards: ISO 9001 (International Standards), ANSI/ISO/ASQC Q9001 (American National Standards), BS EN ISO 9001 (European Standards), and CAN/CSA ISO 9001 (Canadian Standards). NOVA switchgear are designed and tested in complete conformance with applicable ANSI C37.60 (recloser)/c37.66 (capacitor switches), IEEE, IEC, and NEMA standards. Cooper Power Systems is strongly committed to improving the reliability of the electric power industry. Technological advances, including the newest microprocessor-based controls and solid insulation NOVA distribution switchgear products, represent our investment in the future. The Shape of Things to Come. 4

26 SWITCH VS. RECLOSER Switch vs. Recloser Switches are designed solely for executing load switching commands, while reclosers execute load switching commands and autonomously interrupt fault currents. This autonomous operation can be extended to the entire distribution feeder, providing either a centralized or decentralized approach. Minimum Trip Sensitivity The use of a recloser on the distribution system increases the ability to sense additional faults. Increased sensitivity and isolation of lower-magnitude faults protects distribution line equipment, minimizes conductor burn down, and reduces the likelihood of a temporary fault evolving to a permanent fault. Centralized Substation breaker required for fault interruption. Entire distribution feeder requires a momentary outage. Centralized system with switches for fault isolation requires 100% reliability of the communication system. Switches are to be opened during periods of de-energized line or load-break ratings. Communication and sectionalizing equipment costs are required for operation. Decentralized Multiple reclosers used on the distribution circuit. Only affected areas see momentary outage. No communication system is required for immediate fault isolation. Inherent system reliability is improved due to multiple independent devices. Full maximum fault interrupting ratings provide increased safety. Sectionalizing costs only. 500 Customers 500 Customers 500 Customers 500 Customers 500 Customers 500 Customers X X F1 Switch F2 Switch X F3 X F1 Recloser X F2 Recloser X F3 Switch Applications MAIFI E = = Recloser Applications MAIFI E = = Switch application diagram. 27 Momentary Outages More than 20 percent of utilities today track momentary operations of blinks. Continual process operations, factory automation, and residential demands require new enhancements to the application of distribution equipment. MAIFI and MAIFI E statistics are becoming more common indices to measure momentary blinks. Traditional fault protection based on substation device (circuit breaker or recloser) protection and lateral fusing is being replaced with the addition of distribution reclosers to provide fault protection, minimizing substation trips and momentary outages. Extensive flexibility in time current curves, minimum trip values, and operation sequences result in simple installations to existing systems providing trip coordination. Cooper Power Systems Leads in Distribution Automation The economic evaluation of momentary outages indicates that the cost of purchasing a recloser is negligible for application with industrial and commercial facilities. Cooper Power Systems is strongly committed to improving the reliability of the electric power industry. Technological advances, including the newest microprocessor-based controls and solid insulation NOVA distribution switchgear products, represent our investment in the future.
