Reinsert screws in tapped holes to avoid losing screws Pull the preterminated short stub, insulated ground wire, and accessories out of the splicing chamber Tape the mounting template to the designated position and mark screw locations (3). Remove mounting template Mount the terminal in designated position with the three mounting screws provided Remove jumper wire retaining rings from poly bag and install in face plate. 6.0 Terminal Grounding Fasten a #6 AWG wire to the ground bar which is located on the front of the unit. Connect other end of ground wire to local ground per company standards. Failure to properly bond and ground the terminal per N.E.C. or local equivalent codes may render protection arrestors useless. 7.0 Entrance Cable Preparation and Termination 7.01 Extend entrance cable at least 2 (610 mm) past cable entry slot. Fasten cable to wall 12" - 18" ( mm) above or below terminal dependent upon cable entrance choice Install the blank plate into the unused cable entry slot. This must be done to maintain UL Listing Place both halves of the plastic gland around the cable jacket with the groove (near the end of the gland) pointed toward the cable entry port. Snap the two halves together pair 100 pair Align the groove with the cable entry port and slide the gland into the port. Allow a minimum of 2" (51 mm) of sheath to extend past the gland into the splicing chamber. Mark this point for sheath removal. Remove the gland from the cable entry port and slide on the cable sheath to where the PST is located and temporarily tape the gland to the cable sheath. 2" (51mm) 7.07 Remove cable sheath leaving a minimum of 1/2" (13 mm) of core wrap to protect cable from bonding connector. Conductor length should be a minimum of 21" (533 mm). Core Wrap /2" (13 mm) For top entry, slide 3M brand Pull'N'Shrink Tubing (PST) over cable sheath with pull tab facing up. For bottom entry, pull tab must be facing down when sliding over cable sheath. Top Entry 7.08 Identify and tape ends of binder groups to keep conductors from unwinding during splicing operations Bond entrance cable shield to insulated ground wire per standard procedure Slide the plastic gland toward the cable entry port, align the groove and insert into the cable port Temporarily tape PST to wall, cable or other suitable surface to keep the PST out of the way

5 7.11 Cable diameters allowed in the area of PST application are as follows: PET Pair Count Entrance Cable Minimum Diameter Maximum Diameter.42" (11 mm).63" (16 mm) 1.00" (25 mm) 1.08" (27 mm) 1.4 (37 mm) 1.80" (46 mm) If entrance cable diameter is smaller than the allowed minimum, build up diameter by applying 88T vinyl tape or equivalent Slide PST over the gland and position as shown in drawing, based on size of the terminal. Slowly unwind loose core tail in a counterclockwise direction while edging PST toward terminal side as the core is removed. b. Place modular connector base onto splicing head. The cut corner of the base should be on the left-hand side and rear of the splicing head. c. Select entrance cable binder group and lay into base by color code. Check conductor order with check comb. Select matching binder group from preconnectorized short stub. Place body/cover on top of base, matching the cut corners. d. Crimp connector using the 4030, 4031 or 4036 crimping unit. e. To terminate a 4187 Extension Stub onto the preconnectorized short stub, use either a 4255 Hand Presser or an MS 2 Splicing Head. f. To terminate extension stub to preconnectorized short stub using the 4255 Hand Presser, refer to the 4255 Hand Presser Instruction Bulletin. g. To terminate extension stub to preconnectorized short stub using the MS 2 Splicing Head, remove the three screws, colorcoded wire guides and blue pair separator from splicing head. Gold adapter is not used in this application The PST must be positioned a maximum of 1/ (6 mm) away from the terminal side. If this dimension is not achieved, remove collapsed PST with sharp knife and repeat steps 7.03, 7.10 and If less than of PST remains after core removal, apply a new section of PST. Pair Separator Wire Guide After positioning PST as close as possible to terminal side, continue core removal to collapse PST over clamp halves. Complete core removal. h. Place extension stub into splicing head. Place short stub with corresponding binder group on top. Use the green base retainer posts for alignment. Cut Corner 7.14 Wire Termination: a. Attach 4041 Splice Head to 4044 Frame Adapter. Snap adapter legs into diamondshaped cutouts in bracket Gold adapter must be placed in splice head before splicing Alignment Post i. Crimp connector using the 4030, 4031 or 4036 crimping unit. j. For wire termination onto the preconnectorized 710-type connector short stub, refer to Bell System practice, section

6 k. Remove clamp from traverse bar assembly and mount traverse bar 3" (76 mm) from PET with two #12 wood screws (not supplied). d. Identify and tape ends of binder groups to keep conductors from unwinding during splicing operations. e. Lay binder groups into the corresponding PETs using the clamp halves as an entry guide After termination is complete, neatly bundle wire and modular connectors and lay in splice chamber. Close chamber door and secure with screws supplied or any #8-32 screw 1/ - 1/2" (6 mm - 13 mm) long to meet UL requirements Scotchlok TM UR and UY Connectors may be substituted for the modular connectors on the preconnectorized short stub. Use Scotchlok E-9 Series Tools for proper crimping of connectors. f. Install second clamp half over binder groups by snapping together Multiple Terminal Installation 8.01 Vertical Stacking The design of the integral splice chamber and grooved clamp halves to and from that chamber, enables up to three PETs of same pair count to be stacked vertically (dependent on cable diameter). Vertical stacking is used when the entrance cable pair count is greater than the capacity of a single PET or when the installation design requires that only a portion of entrance cable pairs be initially terminated. a. Fasten entrance cable to the wall above or below terminals, dependent upon cable entrance choice. Attach the PETs to the mounting surface in a vertical arrangement. Ensure proper spacing by placing one of the clamp halves in position between terminals. g. Install the blank plate into the unused cable entry slot. This must be done to maintain UL Listing. For wire termination onto preconnectorized short stub, refer to the MS 2 Splicing Instruction Bulletin. h. When the installation design requires that only a portion of entrance cable pairs be initially terminated, e.g. 100-pair entrance cable into a 50-pair terminal, the free conductors should be a minimum of 21" (533 mm) from the farthest PET cable entry port. Tape ends together and neatly lay them into the integral splice chamber on top of the terminated cable pairs. Whenever a multiple installation is used, all PETs should be common-grounded with a #6 AWG ground attached to the 3-port ground bar b. Remove cable sheath, leaving a minimum of 1/2" (13 mm) of core wrap to protect cable from bonding connector. Free conductor length should be equal to or longer than the vertical length of the mounted PETs. c. Assemble PST according to Sections 7.03 through Horizontal Stacking When the system design requires a horizontal arrangement for PETs, a remote splice case is required to transition the entrance cable into smaller pair count cable with the use of the 4187 Extension Stubs

7 8.03 Combination Stacking For high pair count installations where both vertical and horizontal stacking are required, combining both methods will provide a compact and neat installation. c. Attach bridging clips to Quick-Connect contacts to connect entrance cable pairs to distribution cable pairs. Bridging Clip OPTION 2 - RJ-21 Quick-Connect Multiple Dist Distribution Cable Termination Protected Entrance Terminals a. Terminate the distribution cables with 25-pair Universal Plugs (RJ-21 type, male) per standard procedure. b. Overwrap the plugs with the attached strain relief straps to secure tightly. a.
