CHAPTER 2: Introduction 2.1 Description The Automatic Switching System provides an efficient and reliable way to switch between an active and fallback system. The system was designed specifically for the user who requires both local and remote switching, but not necessarily the sophisticated switching and monitoring capabilities of a fully automated network management system. It can switch locally by a toggle switch or from a distance through a remote control panel. The system is expandable to a maximum of 64 racks with each rack accommodating up to 16 interface cards (installed in slots 0 to 15) plus a power supply and control card. The system can accommodate up to 1024 channels being switched simultaneously. A variety of interfaces can be used within the same rack. Each interface card is transparent to data. Magnetic latching relays are used for switching and remain in the last switched position in case the power fails. Interface cards are available for RS-232, coax BNC, twinaxial, WANG BNC/TNC, double coaxial, V.35, RJ- 11, RJ-45, 4-wire utility, DB9, and DB15. 9
AUTOMATIC SWITCHING SYSTEM The remote control option is made available through either the SM516A Remote Control Panel or the SM517A Remote System Gang Controller. The SM516A gives remote capability up to 2000 feet (610 meters) whereas the SM517A provides for capability over the telephone system using modems. The Remote Control Panel can be used with each rack in the system to provide maximum flexibility and control. The Remote Control Panel is connected to the Automatic Switching System rack using a telco cable with a 50-pin connector. The Remote Control Panel can be located up to 2000 feet (610 meters) away. This panel provides the user with the same functions that can be performed manually: individual and gang switching of each rack. These functions are either enabled or disabled by a key-operated switch on the panel. The Remote System Gang Controller comes in a separate standalone box and is connected to the Automatic Switching System rack using RJ cable. The Remote System Gang Controller can be sent commands from an ASCII terminal over an RS-232 link. This link can be set up using modems, which gives the user the option of being located virtually anywhere, even in a 10
CHAPTER 2: Introduction distant city, while having control over the system. Only Gang switching can be controlled through this unit. Individual channel selection can not be addressed. Individual switching can only be controlled locally on the rack or remotely through the Remote Control Panel. 2.2 Features The system is available in a variety of interfaces. This means you can have all of your equipment commanded through one rack panel instead of numerous components doing a little of each. The modular construction of the system permits mixing interfaces within the same rack. This provides greater flexibility for you as your system grows or changes. The system can be expanded for gang switching up to 1024 lines. This permits numerous circuits to be changed with a single switch. The system is transparent to all protocols and communication formats. The switch makes no changes in the data or format being transmitted. It passes it through unchanged. 11
AUTOMATIC SWITCHING SYSTEM The remote option provides accessibility and control from a remote ASCII terminal. This allows a remote manager to have control over the circuits using a simple RS-232 link. System security is provided through a key-operated switch. Tampering or inadvertent switching is kept to a minimum, thereby ensuring maximum safety. The hermetically sealed relays ensure reliability. Dirt, dust, and moisture cannot interfere with the switching operations. The latching relays remain in the last switched position if the power fails. This means you have at least partial system operation if the power is lost to the Automatic Switching System. 12
CHAPTER 2: Introduction 2.3 Typical Applications 1. Backing up T-1 muxes or links for restoring service. 2. Switching to spare equipment or substituting line equipment with a single command from a control terminal. 3. Providing immediate backup in the case of primary equipment failure with on-line switching. 4. Centralizing control over line routing. 5. Remote system gang switching at unattended locations. 13

AUTOMATIC SWITCHING SYSTEM NOTE There are two control cards, the SM514C and the SM515C. Both have a power module and provide the power requirements to operate an entire rack. In addition, the control card determines the means and type of gang switching, either rack level or system level. Model SM514C, Power Supply Card + System Level Gang Card This card performs gang switching on a rack level and system level. Manual system gang switching is done with a toggle switch. More than one of these cards can be used in a system that provides the ability to system gang switch from one or more racks. When using this card, all of the control cards in the system must be interconnected with RJ-11 cables. This card is located in slot 16 of the master switch rack. All other slave racks will get master switching information from this power supply card. 18

CHAPTER 2: Introduction THE REMOTE SYSTEM GANG CONTROLLER Model SM517A (and SM517AE), Remote System Gang Controller This unit acts as an interface between the Automatic Switching Rack and an RS-232 link. Operated through an ASCII terminal, this unit performs gang switching on a single rack or an entire system. All cards in a rack will be switched simultaneously. No individual switching is available with this option and no individual channel switching will occur. The controller is used with the SM514C and SM515C power supply cards using RJ-11 cross-pinned cable. The unit can operate at 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 4800, and 9600 bps. The speed is jumperselectable with straps. The unit uses eight data bits, no parity bit, and one stop bit. If individual rack control is needed, use a Remote System Gang Controller for each rack. By setting the internal DIP switch in the unit, the user determines a security character. Commands to the unit are then performed by first transmitting the security character and then the command to either switch or the command to give the status. Refer to the table for DIP switch settings for the security character. 21
AUTOMATIC SWITCHING SYSTEM Commands recognized by the unit are: To switch to A: A To switch to B: B Give Status: S When status is requested, the message Switched to A or Switched to B will appear on the terminal s screen. Entering any other command will send a menu to the terminal. NOTE Key operation: With the key turned off on the local unit (the key in the horizontal position), you can only switch from the remote end. If the key is turned off at the remote end, remote switching cannot be performed. The remote keyoperated switch must be in the Enable position before contacts can be switched. NOTE When all settings are ON, there is no security character preceding the command. 22
