1 Before you begin Dell EMC ME4 Series supports the PowerVault ME484 (5U84 dense expansion enclosure) as a direct-attached JBOD behind 13G/14G PowerEdge servers, allowing capacity expansion of up to 336 drives. This offering supports the Dell EMC ME4 Series 12Gb SAS HBA with PowerTools for management. This document is focused solely on JBOD configurations. All other supported configurations are described in detail in the Dell EMC ME4 Series Storage System Deployment Guide. Topics: Introduction System requirements Other Information You May Need Introduction NOTE: This document refers to I/O modules as IOMs. Other Dell EMC documentation might contain references to EMMs (Enclosure Management Modules). For Dell EMC ME4 Series JBOD products, these two terms are interchangeable; they refer to the same module. CAUTION: See the Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory Information document for important safety information before following any procedures listed in this document. An enclosure containing physical disk drives accessed through I/O Modules (IOMs) is called a storage enclosure. A storage enclosure includes various hardware components such as physical disk drives, IOMs, fans, and Power Supply Units (PSUs). You can also establish multiple data paths between the host and the storage enclosure so that loss of any single path (for example, through failure of a host server port) does not result in loss of access to data on the storage enclosure. The storage enclosure is managed by the PowerTools Server Hardware Manager running on a host server. On the host server system, the management software and the storage enclosure communicate management requests and event information by using in-band SAS connections. Storage Enclosure: The ME484 is attached to a server directly. The deployment process includes: Hardware installation Initial system configuration Storage Enclosure Management Software installation NOTE: For more information about product documentation, see Related Documentation available at Dell.com/support. The Storage Enclosure Management Software tools enable an administrator to monitor and update the storage enclosure for optimum usability. The Storage Enclosure Management Software is supported on various Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems (OSs). For more information about specific supported OSs, see the Dell EMC Storage Enclosure PowerVault ME484 JBOD Support Matrix at Dell.com/support/home. 4 Before you begin

System requirements Before installing and configuring the ME484 hardware and software, ensure that the supported OS is installed and minimum system requirements are met. For more information, see the Dell EMC Storage Enclosure PowerVault ME484 JBOD Support Matrix at Dell.com/ support. NOTE: Dell EMC supports several operating systems with the ME484 storage enclosure. For information about the specific operating systems supported by the ME484 storage enclosure, see the Dell EMC Storage Enclosure PowerVault ME484 JBOD Support Matrix at Dell.com/support. Other Information You May Need NOTE: For all ME484 Enclosure Storage System documentation, go to Dell.com/support/manuals. Your product documentation includes: The Dell Storage PowerTools Server Hardware Manager Administrator s Guide describes how to use the Server Hardware Manager CLI to manage ME484 Enclosure storage systems. The Dell Storage PowerTools Server Hardware Manager Support Matrix and the Dell EMC Storage Enclosure - PowerVault ME484 JBOD Support Matrix provide information about the software and hardware compatibility requirements for the Server Hardware Manager. The ME4 Series Owner s Manual provides information about system hardware features and describes how to troubleshoot the system and install or replace system components. Before you begin 5

Mount the enclosures in the rack 2 This section describes how to unpack the ME4 Series Storage System equipment, prepare for installation, and safely mount the enclosures into the rack. Topics: Rackmount rail kit Install the 5U enclosure Rackmount rail kit Rack mounting rails are available for use in 19-inch rack cabinets. These rails have been designed and tested for the maximum enclosure weight, and to make sure that multiple enclosures may be installed without loss of space within the rack. Use of other mounting hardware may cause some loss of rack space. Contact Dell EMC to make sure suitable mounting rails are available for the rack you plan to use. Install the 5U enclosure The 5U84 enclosure is delivered without the disks installed. Due to the weight of the enclosure, install it into the rack without DDICs installed, and remove the rear panel CRUs to lighten the enclosure weight. The adjustment range of the railkit from the inside of the front post to the inside of the rear post is 660 mm 840 mm. This range suits a one meter deep rack within Rack Specification IEC To facilitate access, remove the door from the rack. 2 Ensure that the pre-assembled rails are at their shortest length (see also the reference label on the inside of the rail). 3 Locate the rail location pins inside the front of the rack, and extend the length of the rail assembly to position the rear location pins. Ensure the pins are fully inserted in the square or round holes in the rack posts. Figure 1. Secure brackets to the rail (left hand rail shown for 5U) 6 Mount the enclosures in the rack

CAUTION: Once the enclosure is installed in the rack, dispose of the lifting straps. Due to the difficulty in attaching the straps once the enclosure is installed into the rack, the straps are not suitable for removing the enclosure from the rack. Reinsert all of the rear panel modules, and install all of the DDICs into the drawers accessed from the front panel per the following instructions in the Dell EMC ME4 Series Storage System Owner s Manual. Installing a fan cooling module Installing a PSU Installing an IOM Installing a DDIC Mount the enclosures in the rack 7

3 Disk Drive Installation Disk drive module The disk drive modules used in 5U84 enclosures are referred to as a Disk Drive in Carrier (DDIC). DDIC in 5U chassis Each disk drive is housed in a carrier that enables secure insertion of the disk drive into the drawer with the appropriate SAS carrier transition card. The following figure shows a DDIC with a 3.5" disk. Figure 2. DDIC with 3.5" disk The DDIC features a latch button (center of top view) and a slide latch with arrow label (left of latch button). These features allow you to install and secure the DDIC into the disk slot within the drawer. They also allow you to disengage the DDIC from its slot, and remove it from the drawer. The DDIC has a single Drive Fault LED (top view on right), which illuminates amber when the disk has a fault. Populating drawers with DDICs The 5U84 enclosure does not ship with DDICs installed. Before populating drawers with DDICs, ensure that you adhere to the following guidelines: The minimum number of disks supported by the enclosure is 14. DDICs must be added to disk slots in complete rows (14 disks at a time). Beginning at the front of each drawer, install DDICs consecutively by number, and alternately between the top drawer and the bottom drawer. Namely, install first at slots 0 through 13 in the top drawer, and then 42 through 55 in the bottom drawer. After that, install slots 14 through 27, and so on. The number of populated rows must not differ by more than one row between the top and bottom drawers. Hard disk drives (HDD) and solid state drives (SDD) can be mixed in the same drawer. 8 Disk Drive Installation

HDDs installed in the same row should have the same rotational speed. The following figure shows a drawer that is fully populated with DDICs: Figure 3. 5U84 enclosure drawer fully populated with DDICs Disk Drive Installation 9

Cable host servers to the storage system 4 Topics: Cabling considerations Cabling your enclosure Label the back-end cables Cabling considerations There are a number of methods to cable the PowerVault ME484 series storage enclosure to host servers and to additional PowerVault ME484 series storage enclosures. The particular configuration selected depends on storage capacity, level of resiliency of both the server and storage enclosure, and the OS being used. Use only Dell EMC or 12Gb HD mini-sas cables for host connection. Cable requirements for expansion enclosures When adding storage, observe the following guidelines: When installing SAS cables to JBOD modules, use only supported HD mini-sas x4 cables. Qualified HD mini-sas to HD mini-sas 0.5 m (1.64') cables are used to connect cascaded enclosures in the rack. The maximum drive enclosure cable length allowed in any configuration is 2 m (6.56'). When adding more than two drive enclosures, you might need to purchase additional cables, depending upon number of enclosures and cabling method used. You might need to order additional or longer cables when reverse-cabling a fault-tolerant configuration. Cabling your enclosure You can cable the storage enclosure to host systems and to additional storage enclosures in three different configurations: Single-path configuration Uses a simplified cabling scheme, but does not provide redundancy or fault-tolerance. Use this when the OS or a higher-level application is being used for data resiliency. Symmetric multi-path configuration Uses a cascading configuration that provides path redundancy, but does not provide against enclosure loss. Asymmetric multi-path configuration A high availability configuration that allows the host server to reach any enclosure if a path or single enclosure is lost. Single HBA single JBOD This configuration is valid with or without path redundancy on HBA port Cable host servers to the storage system
