1 Z Series and SM Installation Instructions This kit includes the parts and documentation necessary to install the Ribbon Take-Up Spindle Maintenance Kit into the following printers: Z Series (ZM, Z6M, ZMplus, Z6Mplus ) and SM. Read these instructions thoroughly before installing this kit. Caution Turn Off (O) the printer and disconnect it from the power source before performing the following procedure. Caution This installation must be performed by a qualified service technician. 3 Remove the Electronics Cover Remove the Electronics Cover Note Retain all parts removed during disassembly, unless otherwise directed.. Turn Off (O) the printer and disconnect the AC power cord.. Open the media door and remove media and ribbon.. What model of printer are you working on? If working on Then ZM/Z6M Continue with ZM/Z6M and ZMplus/Z6Mplus. ZMplus/Z6Mplus SM Go to SM on page 5. ZM/Z6M and ZMplus/Z6Mplus. See Figure. Remove the screw and washer or screws securing the electronics cover. 4 Remove the Electronics Cover. See Figure. Remove the electronics cover according to the directions below. If you have a ZM/Z6M ZMplus/Z6Mplus Then Remove the electronics cover by pulling the top of the cover away from the main frame and lifting. Remove the electronics cover by pressing in on the electronics cover with the palm of your hand, then lifting up on the cover to remove it. Figure Remove the Electronics Cover ZMplus/Z6Mplus ZM/Z6M. 5 Remove the Electronics Cover 5 SM. See Figure. Remove the electronics cover mounting screw and washer and then close the media door. 6 6 Remove the Electronics Cover. See Figure 5. Remove the four remaining mounting screws securing the electronics cover.. Remove the electronics cover by lifting straight up. 7 Remove the Main Logic Board 7 Remove the Main Logic Board. Caution Observe proper electrostatic safety precautions when handling static-sensitive components such as circuit boards and printheads. Connect yourself to an antistatic device.. See Figure 6. Remove all cables from the main logic board (MLB). Note Take note of the location of all connectors on the main logic board. 8 8 Remove the Main Logic Board. See Figure 7. Remove the six screws and one nut securing the main logic board to the frame of the printer.. Remove the two studs and washers securing the serial port connector to the back of the printer. 9 Remove the Wireless Option Board 9 Remove the Wireless Option Board. See Figure 8. Remove the two mounting screws securing the wireless board to the back cover. 10 0 Remove the Old Ribbon Take-up Spindle Assembly Remove the Old Ribbon Take-up Spindle Assembly. See Figure 9. Remove the top mounting screw for the bracket and then loosen the bottom screw.. Move the mounting bracket to gain access to the ribbon take-up spindle clutch gear. Figure 9 Move the Mounting Bracket Bracket Intermediate Gear Mounting Screw Mark the outside of the compound gear.. Mark the compound gear with a marker so you will know the proper posion of the gear.. Remove the compound gear mounting screw. 5. Remove the compound gear. 7700L-00 Rev. 11 Remove the Old Ribbon Take-up Spindle Assembly 6. See Figure. Loosen the two set screws on the ribbon take-up spindle collar and slide the collar off of the shaft. 7. Remove the plastic thrust washer, bearing, and clutch gear assembly from the shaft of the ribbon take-up spindle assembly. 12 Remove the Old Ribbon Take-up Spindle Assembly 8. See Figure. From the media side, remove the ribbon take-up spindle assembly and washer by sliding it out of the printer. 13 Install the New Ribbon Take-Up Spindle Assembly Install the New Ribbon Take-Up Spindle Assembly. See Figure on page. Slide the washer removed previously onto the ribbon take-up spindle assembly shaft.. On the media side, slide the ribbon take spindle shaft through the hole in the main frame.. On the electronics side, place the washer, gear clutch assembly, plastic thrust washer, and collar onto the end of the ribbon take-up assembly shaft. Ensure the gear clutch assembly gear meshes with the other compound gear.. Place a 0.00 in. (0.508 mm) feeler gauge between the thrust washer and the collar. From the media side, push in on the ribbon take-up spindle. Tighten the two screws in the collar and ensure the ribbon take-up spindle turns freely. 5. What model of printer do you have? 14 Complete the Installation Complete the Installation ZM/Z6M Reinstall the Electronics Cover. See Figure on page. Reinstall the electronics cover by setting the lower flange in the base and pushing the top of the cover toward the main frame.. Figure on page. Open the media door and reinstall the mounting screws to secure the electronics cover.. Reinstall the media and ribbon.. Reconnect the AC Power cord and data cables 5. Turn On (l) the printer. ZMplus/Z6Mplus Reinstall the Electronics Cover. See Figure on page.install the electronics cover by aligning it and sliding down, ensuring the lower flange is inside the base and the upper flange is between the main frame and the media door.. See Figure on page. Open the media door and install the mounting screw and lock washer to secure the electronics cover.. Reinstall the media and ribbon.. 15 Complete the Installation 5 SM. Did you remove a wireless option board? If Then No Continue to Reinstall the MLB. Yes a. See Figure 8 on page 9. Reinstall the wireless option board. Reinstall the MLB. See Figure 9 on page 0. Align the mounting bracket with the mounting hole and then reinstall the top mounting screw.. Tighten the bottom mounting screw.. See Figure 7 on page 8. Reinstall the MLB.. See Figure 6 on page 7. Reconnect all cables to the MLB. Reinstall the Electronics Cover. See Figure 5 on page 6. Install the electronics cover by aligning it and sliding down, ensuring the lower tabs are inside the base and the upper flange is between the main frame and the media door.. Install the four mounting screws on the back of the printer.. See Figure on page 5. Open the media door and install the mounting screw and lock washer to secure the electronics cover..
