PC BIOS Settings: (22 Jan 2004) These settings will be required for either O.S. Installation or to improve the PC performance. S.No. Standard Hard Disks Operation Reason 1. CMOS SETUP Keep Type setting either User or None If type setting is Auto, every time when machine boots it takes extra time in detecting HDDs. Keep Block Mode, LBA Mode & 32 Bit Mode Enable/On 2. Floppy Drive Select A: & B: as per your configuration. If B: is not present make If this setting is wrong every time it will report error during boot selection for that None 3. Date & Time For setting Hardware 4. Advanced Virus Check Setup Option Date & Time Keep it Disable 5. Quick Boot Keep it On/Enable 6. Boot Sequence Normally keep Boot from C/IDE0 drive. Only During O.S. Installation Priority to CDROM Boot will be given, but just after completion of installation revert it back to previous position. 7. S.M.A.R.T. Keep it enable Option 8. Bootup Off NUM-LOCK 9. Floppy Drive Swap 10. Floppy Drive Seek If you have boot floppy of such type, which is not A: drive, then use this option to make other floppy drive A: Make it disable If enabled, during most of the operation, it will create nuisance. It will not allow you to format Hard disk or Floppy drive etc. This setting does not matter in case of Linux. If you do not revert it back, every time system will take longer seek time (CDROM search). Make Hard Disk Access faster Now a days right side key pad is not being used for numeric data entry. If enable, during every boot system will waste time in seeking floppy drive.
11. Password Check Make it Setup (If you are the only user of this machine) Make it Always (If more than one user is using this machine but group of users does not want machine to be used by others) 12. L1 Cache Enable Make CPU operation speed faster 13. L2 Cache Enable Make Motherboard Operations faster 14. System BIOS Cacheable 15. Video BIOS Cacheable Enable Enable Make system to work faster. This setting does not matter in case of Linux Make Video operation Faster. This setting does not matter in case of Linux 16. LBA Mode On HDD Recognition will be much easier Bit Access On Make Disk I/O Operation fast 18. Plug & Play Plag & Play Aware O.S. 19. AGP/Display Memory Size 20. Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA 21. HDD Detect HDD Auto Detect Yes 8-32 MB As per your requirement Make it yes if you are using PCI Display card Always select LBA mode Know about PC Hardware: PC Components can be classified in following categories. Internal Component: o Mother Board CPU CPU Heat Sink CPU Fan BIOS CHIP EPROM Flash BIOS RAM Slots SIMM Slots (2 to 4) EDO RAM Slots SD RAM Slot RD RAM Slot Onboard Ports & Connectors This setting does not matter in case of Linux Make is as less as possible It will make Display Operation faster. In case of AGP Adaptor or On Board AGP make this option No This mode is recognized by Windows as well as Linux 2 IDE Ports {Maximum four devices (2 in each IDE port) can be connected as:
Primary IDE Port One as Master Device Other as Slave Device Secondary One as Master Device Other Slave Device To connect more Hard Disk Use SCSI controller Card with SCSI HDDs /CDROM etc. Up to 16 SCSI devices can be connected on a single SCSI port provided by the SCSI controller. This is however more expansive option compared to IDE option. Or Attach a Special Extra IDE Adapter Card which will provide two more ports as IDE3 & IDE4. So one can connect 4 more devices. But this card is a rare card. It is not very easy to get this card frequently} o To connect: Harddisk/s CDROM CD-Writer Internal Zip Drive (100/250 MB) Internal Zaz Drive (1 GB) Internal Imation Drive (120 MB) 1 Floppy Drive Port o 2 Floppies as A: & B: can be connected with the same port (Device connected to last connector of the floppy cable will work as A:, while other will work as B:} 2 Serial/COM (COM1 & COM2) ports (RS232 ports) o To Connect Serial Mouse MODEM 1 Parallel Port o To Connect Parallel Port Printer/Scanner/Plotter External Parallel Port devices such as Zip Drive, CD-Writer etc. 2-6 USB Port (By using 1 Usb Port one can connect upto 64 USB Devices Thus with 2 USB ports one can go upto 128 devices) o To Connect Web Camera Snazzi On Line MPEG Convertor Card USB Key Board USB Mouse USB Zip Drive USB Scanner USB Printer External USB CD-Writer External USB CD-ROM Keyboard Port (5 PIN DIN) PS/2 Keyboard Port PS/2 Mouse Port SATA Ports SAS Ports Firewire (1394) Ports
A motherboard may provide one of the following interfaces (I/Fs) for the key board Keyboard Port 5 Pin Din, PS/2 or USB and depending upon the provided keyboard interface, that kind of keyboard can be used (connetecd). Various kind of passive converters are also available like PS/2 5 Pin Din, USB PS/2. For example one can connect a PS/2 keyboard on 5 Pin Din Keyboard port using PS/2 5 Pin Din Port converter. Similar converters are also available for other devices like mouse, printer, Modem etc. Onboard Sound Card related I/O Line in Line out Mic MIDI Port Speaker Out Onboard Display Card (AGP /PCI) 15 PIN SVGA Adaptor Port TV S-Video Out (Optional) ISA Slots 8 Bit To connect ISA o Super IDE Card o Any card having ISA I/F Extended ISA 16 Bit Slot (EISA) To connect EISA/ISA (To connect all 8/16 bit ISA cards) o Internal MODEM o Any card having EISA/ISA I/F VL-BUS Slot (Transient Bus, now no more) To connect VL-Bus o Super IDE Card o Internal MODEM o Any card having VL-BUS I/F PCI BUS To connect PCI o Super IDE Card o Internal MODEM o Any card having PCI I/F Slot for external AGP Card (It is only ment for AGP Display Card) o AGP Display Card Slot For External Mother Board Cache
To increase external cache of Motherboard to improve performance Slot For External Video RAM It you do not want to allocate main memory for on board AGP display card, use this card to add Video memory for on board AGP. Various Jumpers for Tailoring Motherboard as per CPU and other requirements BIOS Reset Jumper { Most of the time Its location is near to Ni/Cd MotherBoard Cell} Use this Jumper If you want to change BIOS setting but do not remember the BIOS Password. Connectors Sockets Reset Connector {To Connect front panel RESET Switch Turbo Connector {Obsolete now} Hard Disk/CDROM Activity LED Connector {Cabinet Front Panel Disk I/O Activity LED} Power On Connector {To connect Front panel On Status LED} o SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply, Power ranges from Watt} It has following outputs A special pair for MotherBoard supply { During connection of this pair to MotherBoard,Black wires from both the connectors must come adjecent} 4 to 8 Identical D Type Connectors for providing power to o HDD/ CD ROM/ CD-Writer/ Internal Zip(Zaz) Drive o Floppy Drive o CPU Fan o Front Panel Clock speed Display o USB/Firewire Devices Monitor can be connected to an external connector (Extension to direct A.C. power supply). Power consumption by monitor is not included in SMPS power rating. Semi Internal Component: o CD/DVD ROM o CD-Writer/Combo Drives o Floppy Drive o Internal Zip Drive o Internal Tape Drive External Component: o Monitor o Key Board o Mouse o Joy Stick etc. Optional Component: o Printer o Scanner o MODEM o External Zip Drive o Parallel Port CDROM o Parallel Port CD-Writer o External Online Video Capture Card, T.V.
