OpenStorge OpenStorge llows ProtecTIER to be integrted with NetBckup to provide the mens for bckup-to-disk without using virtul tpe librry (VTL) emultion. Using plug-in tht is instlled on n OpenStorge-enbled medi server, ProtecTIER cn implement communiction protocol tht supports dt trnsfer nd control between the bckup server nd the ProtecTIER server. Therefore, to support the plug-in, ProtecTIER implements storge server emultion. repliction A process tht trnsfers logicl objects like crtridges from one ProtecTIER repository to nother. The repliction function llows ProtecTIER deployment to be distributed cross sites. Ech site hs single or clustered ProtecTIER environment. Ech ProtecTIER environment hs t lest one ProtecTIER server. The ProtecTIER server tht is prt of the repliction grid hs two dedicted ethernet ports tht re used for repliction. Repliction ports re connected to the customer's WAN nd re configured on two subnets s defult. repliction grid A set of repositories tht shre common ID nd cn potentilly trnsmit nd receive logicl objects through repliction. A repliction grid defines set of ProtecTIER repositories nd ctions between them. It is configured by using the ProtecTIER Repliction Mnger. The ProtecTIER Repliction Mnger is softwre component instlled on ProtecTIER server or dedicted host. The ProtecTIER Repliction Mnger should be ble to recognize ll of the members of the entire network tht it hndles on both repliction subnets. The ProtecTIER Repliction Mnger mnges the configurtion of multiple repliction grids in n orgniztion. An gent on every node in ech ProtecTIER server intercts with the server nd mintins tble of its grid members. About this document xix

By emulting tpe librries, ProtecTIER ProtecTIER VTL llows you to switch to disk bckup without replcing your entire bckup environment. Your existing bckup ppliction cn ccess virtul robots to move virtul crtridges between virtul slots nd drives. The bckup ppliction perceives tht the dt is being stored on crtridges while ProtecTIER ctully stores dt on deduplicted disk repository. visibility switching The utomted process tht trnsfers the visibility of VTL crtridge from its mster to its replic nd vice vers. The visibility switching process is triggered by moving crtridge to the source librry Import/Export (I/E) slot. The crtridge will then dispper from the I/E slot nd pper t the destintion librry's I/E slot. To move the crtridge bck to the source librry, the crtridge must be ejected to the shelf from the destintion librry. The crtridge will then dispper from the destintion librry nd repper t the source I/E slot. Your feedbck is importnt in helping to provide the most ccurte nd highest qulity informtion. About this tsk If hrdwre degrdtion or filure occurs, the components listed in Tble 3 on pge 6, genertes one or more of the following types of lerts: v Beeps or other udible indictors v Chnges in LED stte v Hrdwre fults reported through the ProtecTIER Mnger v Emil lerts or SNMP trp reports (if you enbled either, or both, of these options during system configurtion) Importnt: Fult occurrences in the MegRAID controller, SAS expnder, Fibre Chnnel dpter, Ethernet dpter, or DIMM might prevent communiction between ProtecTIER Mnger nd the server. As result, ProtecTIER Mnger might not be ble to report the hrdwre fult. Becuse of this limittion, enbling emil lerts nd SNMP reports is recommended. By doing so, you receive fult notifictions regrdless of ProtecTIER Mnger vilbility. Emil lert nd SNMP report messges might tke up to 45 minutes to rrive fter fult occurrence. The lert (or report) provides informtion bout the fulty component, the nture of the fult, nd suggestions for resolution. To enble emil lerts or SNMP trps, refer to the chpter on ProtecTIER configurtion, in the IBM TS7620 ProtecTIER Dedupliction Applince Express Instlltion nd Setup Guide for VTL, nd OpenStorge Systems, v3.3, GA This tble provides n overview of the types of lerts ech component genertes. v Components identified by squre (") hs those lert options. v Components identified by tringle ( ) might generte n lert in ProtecTIER Mnger. This type of filure cn be seen s n LED chnge or in n emil lert/snmp trp report. v If the component cell in the tble does not contin squre or tringle, then tht type of lert does not occur. For exmple there is no udible lrm for dul-port Ethernet dpter. Refer to step 1 on pge 9 for informtion bout using ProtecTIER Mnger lert windows, emil lert messges, nd SNMP trp reports. SNMP notifictions, or trps, cn be sent even if the ProtecTIER Mnger interfce is unvilble. To use SNMP trps, you need the following items: v SNMP trp receiver softwre tht is instlled on n SNMP trp server. Follow the instructions from the mnufcturer to instll nd configure the SNMP trp receiver softwre. v The file nme nd loction of the mngement informtion bse (MIB) file for the SNMP trp receiver. On the ProtecTIER server, the file nme is: IBM-TS7600-SNMP-MIBV2.mib in: /usr/shre/snmp/mibs. The full pth is: /usr/shre/snmp/mibs/ibm-ts7600-snmp-mibv2.mib. v The IBM-TS7600-SNMP-MIBV2.mib file needs to be copied onto the SNMP trp receiver nd the trp receiver softwre must point to the directory loction of the MIB file for trnsltion of the trp messging. v SNMP trpping enbled on one or more of your ProtecTIER servers. Use the ProtecTIER Mnger Configurtion wizrd to enble the SNMP trp option on 3959 SM1 servers.
