8.8.1 How the WatchDog Module Keep Running your system This Module has communication via RS232 to computer kiosk on the Boink applications are running. When this communication is interrupted for more than 10 minutes. The Watchdog Module executes a shutdown process for all internal kiosk devices. This include interrupt the input power AC kiosk utility for a little seconds. The Remote Kiosk Monitoring System application send a data via RS-232 to Watchdog Module, it be interpreted like it has to init a new counter time Components This system has two basic components: Hardware component: This is a physical module that executes the shutdown process. Software component: This is The Remote Kiosk Monitoring System application. It is in communication to the Hardware component through RS232 serial port. When this application is normally running, the hardware component, receive information and it does not executes any shutdown process, otherwise when the component hardware does not receive any information, it initiates a shutdown process. Since the kiosk s computer should be frozen Functions The Watchdog Module has two basic functions: Prevent long times frozen kiosk s computer. Restart internal kiosk devices Preparation The Preparation section is designed to familiarize you with your Watchdog Module. This part, describe front and rear panels and user controls. Study this section to become familiar with your Watchdog Module before installing and manipulating the unit Overview of the WatchDog module The Watchdog Module standard models with input AC voltage ratings from 110 VAC to 130 VAC. The front panel LED indicators and control buttons and switches for manual operation when it be necessary Front panel control buttons The control buttons allow you to operate the Watchdog Module: The ON/OFF Switch let you turn on or turn off the Watchdog Module. The Push Reset let you directly turn off the kiosk s CPU. You have to take very care with this button to avoid wrong operations. Boink Systems Inc SX6 Installation Manual VER
WatchDog front panel Front panel led indicators The front panel LED indicators (small colored lights) indicate how the Watchdog Module is functioning. Led Indicator ON Module show you when the Watchdog Module is turn on, this is a green led. Shutdown Kiosk led indicator show you when the Watchdog Module is executing a shutdown process Rear panel On the rear panel, this module has all connectors necessary to normally operating: Power Inlet Module. This is an AC input socket that let you supply energy to the module; the nominal input voltage is 120 VAC. Reset PC connector. This is a plug connector, this send the reset signal to the kiosk s computer. Serial Port Module. This is a standard DB9 connector for serial communications RS232, to the kiosk s computer. Boink Systems Inc SX6 Installation Manual VER
WatchDog rear panel WatchDog Installation The Installation section explains connecting the Watchdog Module. This module has internal connections inside of the CPU and external from the kiosk s Computer to the WatchDog module CPU inside connections. To make this connection, you should identify the Internal connection PCB, The Reset connector and The Reset signal input connector lid. Please, follow the next steps to make these connections: Make sure to disconnect the kiosk s computer and the kiosk s master switch is turn off. Boink Systems Inc SX6 Installation Manual VER
Remove the lateral plates from the kiosk s computer. Take the Reset signal input connector lid and put the lid on the CPU slot and secure it with a screw. Observe the reset signal input connector is wired to internal connection PCB. Stick the Internal connection PCB on the base of CPU. Identify the On/Off connector in the motherboard. Remove the On/Off connector from the motherboard and connect it, in the Push reset CPU connection, on the Internal connection PCB. Take the Reset connector from the internal connection PCB and connect it, in the On/Off connector, on the motherboard WatchDog module connections To make these external connections you should follow the next steps. Take the Reset signal cable (Figure 3.3), and plug in from the Reset PC connector (Figure 2.2) to Reset signal input connector (Figure 3.4), that already it has been installed on the CPU. Boink Systems Inc SX6 Installation Manual VER
Take de Serial Watchdog Cable and plug in from the Serial Port Module (Figure 2.2) to any serial port of the Kiosk s computer. Make sure this serial port doesn t be use for any Boink application. Connect the power plate s power cable and the kiosk computer s power cable to the Watchdog Module s outlets. These are on top of the module (Figure 3.4). Don t connect any devices in the others outlets. Boink Systems Inc SX6 Installation Manual VER
Now your Watchdog module is physically installed. In the next section you can see the basic module operating WatchDog physical installation The WatchDog module physical position is on the Coin acceptor tray, behind the acrylic coin box. You need four M6 nuts to fix it in his position. The Front panel has to be toward the Service Door WatchDog Operation This section explains how to use the front panel control buttons, Switches and LED indicators to operate the Watchdog Module also explains the rear panel communication port Front Panel Control Buttons The control buttons allow you to operate the Watchdog Module: The ON/OFF Switch let you turn on or turn off the Watchdog Module. When this switch is up, The Watchdog Module is turn on and the green led too. The Push Reset let you directly turn off the kiosk s CPU. You have to take very care with this button to avoid wrong operations Front Panel Led Indicators The front panel LED indicators (small colored lights) indicate how the Watchdog Module is functioning. This should be connected to the Reset signal connector through to Reset signal cable. Serial Port Module. This is a standard DB9 connector for serial communications RS232, to the kiosk s computer. On the kiosk s computer should be running the Remote Kiosk Monitoring System application, this application is able to detect the number serial port where the Watchdog Module is connected. If this module isn t connected this application show to user a message box indicating this module is disconnected. The next section wills explains how to use this application an options. 38 The Remote Kiosk Monitoring System application This application has communication via RS232 to Watchdog Module. When this communication is interrupted for more than 10 minutes. The Watchdog Module executes a shutdown process for all internal kiosk devices. This include interrupt the input power AC kiosk utility for a little seconds. The Remote Kiosk Monitoring System application send a data via RS-232 to Watchdog Module, it be interpreted like it has to init a new counter time (10 minutes). If the kiosk s computer reaches to a frozen state, this communication is interrupted indefinitely and the Watchdog Module detects this situation, as resulted of this, the watchdog module executes the shutdown process Characteristic This application detects automatically the number serial port where the watchdog module is connected. You can executes a shutdown process from this application, make click on the OFF KIOSK button. This action is executed after of a time delay the user can set this delay on 1, 5 or 10 minutes in agreement to your convenience. You can see a historic file, where it shows the last 100 specials events in chronological order; make click on the HISTORY button. You can Disabled the Watchdog Module from this application. This application detects if the WatchDog is not present You can schedule the WatchDog program and the power off function Warning! If you close this application and the watchdog Module is turn on, this module executes a shutdown process each 10 minutes Operation On first this application try to detect the number serial port where the Watchdog Module is connected, when this program doesn t found, shows a message box, like you see in the figure. Please check the Watchdog Module is turn on and make sure, the Watchdog s serial cable is connected to any free CPU s serial port. Boink Systems Inc SX6 Installation Manual VER
