SHIELD Always make sure the input wires you connect to the N terminals are twisted together and the output wires from the N terminals are twisted together. This is shown in Figures 8 and 9. Also, keep these wires twisted up to within an inch or two of the actual screw terminals. To maintain consistency throughout the, use the same color wires for the inputs and outputs (e.g., always use the orange wire for the input and the white wire for input). This helps to ensure a working the first time and makes troubleshooting easier should a problem occur. Always wire the input, and REF (reference) lines, regardless of the type of wire used. If the wire has three conductors, terminate the third wire (and any spare conductors) to REF. Shielded cable is generally not required, except in very high noise environments, such as near gas ignition systems and radar or magnetic resonance imaging equipment. If you must use shielded wire, wire the bus as shown in the following example (Figure 8). Figure 8: Using Shielded Wire on Wiring the PC Wire the to the converter of the PC. The converter has three wire terminals labeled,, and REF. Connect the converter to the COM (serial) port in back of the computer as shown in Figure 9. If this serial port has 9 pins instead of 5, use a 9-to-5-pin interface cable (DB9F-DB5M). Install the interface cable between the PC and the converter. Plug in the converter s transformer. 6 Network Communications N Communications Bus

For details, refer to the appropriate controller technical bulletin under the s section. You can use the repeater in three different configurations: station, branch, or star. As these configurations show in Figures, and, the maximum length from the PC/Panel Facilitator to the farthest controller can be 5,000 feet. This is the farthest distance the signal can travel. Note, however, that the grand total of all segments can be much longer than 5,000 feet. For example, in Figure, the grand total is 4,000 feet. 8 Network Communications N Communications Bus

13 Installing the Surge Protectors Surge protection is recommended if the is wired between buildings, especially if your area experiences an above average number of thunderstorms annually. The protection is provided by a voltage surge suppressor, which is installed on the near the first controller. An example application is shown in Figure 7. A S C A S C A S C C P N Surge Protector Surge Protector A S C BUILDNGS Figure 7: Surge Protection Installation on the Network Communications N Communications Bus 5
14 The recommended surge protector is the Transient Eliminator, model TE/JC04C, manufactured by Advanced Protection Technologies (APT). The device protects the from lightning. It shunts both common and normal mode voltage surges to ground repeatedly without damage to components.! CAUTION: The surge protector is capable of protecting the from indirect lightning strikes, not direct lightning strikes. A direct strike may cause actual damage to the bus cable or surrounding property. An indirect lightning strike may cause induced voltage transients that could cause electronic malfunction without visible damage to equipment if the equipment was not protected. Use the surge protector with the standard wiring. Do not use it with any other type wiring, such as leased line. If you need surge protection for other wire types, contact APT or another transient noise protection company for other devices. One surge protector is required at each location where the enters a building from the outside. Unlike some surge protectors, this device does not need to be installed at the entry or exit point of the building. Instead, you should install it close to the first controller that receives the wires from the outside. Also, the protector does not require that you use wire different from the standard wiring, such as double-shielded twisted cable. Follow these installation steps, referring to Figure 8:. Mount the device per local codes and install as close as possible to the controller.. Connect the N segment from the outside to the unprotected side of the device.. Connect the N segment that will go to the controller to the protected side of the device. 4. Connect a AWG stranded green wire from Pin 0 to earth ground, provided the total length of the ground wire does not exceed 5 feet. If total length exceeds 5 feet, mount the suppressor near the location where the enters the building to obtain a better earth ground. 5. For hard ground installation, connect the shield to Pin 9. For soft ground installation, connect the shield to Pin 7 For more details on installation, refer to the manufacturer s literature. 6 Network Communications N Communications Bus
