1 HD-CX Series Printer & mcolor 2 Setup/Setting Tips for Envelope Stocks HD-CX 1600/1700 Installation Conditions: Consider the following environmental conditions before selecting the device installation location. The printer can operate in a location where temperature and humidity are within the following ranges; however the output print quality is not assured. Ambient temperature: 10 to 32 C (50 to 90 F) Ambient humidity: 20% to 80% RH (relative humidity); non-condensing Max wet-bulb temperature: 25 C (77 F) For assured print quality, use in a location where temperature and humidity are within the following ranges. Ambient temperature: 17 to 27 C (63 to 81 F) Ambient humidity: 50% to 70% RH (relative humidity); non-condensing NOTE: If installing in a location where the ambient humidity is 30% or less, use a humidifier to raise the humidity level. A static prevention mat can also be used to reduce static discharge between operator and printer. Some General Notes: Envelopes should only be fed from the MPT (or optional external feeder). Envelopes should only exit onto the Face Up Stacker (or onto the optional conveyor). Envelopes must be printed on before they are stuffed. Stuffed envelopes are not compatible. Use laser-safe envelopes to achieve better printing results with less damage to the media. If using window envelopes; use only laser-safe window envelopes. Standard window envelopes are not compatible. The Spot Color option for printing white under the color should not be used with envelope materials. This requires a two pass process which will likely damage the envelope or create jams. If you choose to print clear spot color; the throughput will be dramatically reduced. This is necessary to provide proper toner bonding. Please be sure to set the software, driver and MPT for the correct paper size (dimensions) and orientation. The paper size in the MTP must be manually set using the printer s Tray Configuration menu. Be sure to select a set a custom size. Whenever the Media Type Envelope is selected, the printer will automatically enter Envelope Mode ; which reduces the print speed. This is done to allow more time for the fusing process and helps to reduce media wrinkling. To over-ride the printer s Envelope Mode, to improve envelope throughput, the user can select or create a Custom media size and set the Media Type to Plain. Changing print quality has little to no effect on print speed. If you experience problems (paper size error messages, or print orientation issues) when printing from MS-Word; please print file to PDF and use Adobe Acrobat to print to the printer. Adobe Acrobat provides much better control over orientation. It is normal for the printer to pause periodically to adjust temperature, perform toner density calibrations and perform cleaning cycles. 2 Please be sure your printer driver and printer firmware are up to date. Please visit the Neopost knowledgebase to obtain the most current printer drivers and the firmware download utility. This document was written using printer firmware version A01.42_0_4 and the C941 printer PCL driver version Early printer firmware and drivers may not contain all the features described in this document. Toner Bonding Notes: Environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, will affect toner transfer and toner bonding. For optimum results; make sure the printer environment meets the Installation Conditions For assured print quality as shown on the first page of this document. The type of media will affect toner bonding. Some media types, such as media with uneven or rough surfaces, will have more toner bonding problems than others. Thicker media, or media that is not uniform in thickness, must be run slower to allow for proper toner bonding. The color of the image and or toner density will affect toner bonding. The more toner that is being applied, the more time it takes to bond the toner to the media. For example a bright RED color takes more time to bond than a yellow color, because it is made using more layers of toner (CMYK). Tips for Reducing Envelope Flap Sealing and Curling Issues: If possible; use laser safe envelopes. They are built to resist damage (curling, flap sealing, window shrinkage) caused by the high temperatures produced during the fusing process. Store envelopes in a dry place, inside an unopened box. This will help to reduce the chance that the envelopes will absorb too much humidity; which can reduce the chance for envelope distortion (warping) and flap sealing. Envelopes with higher humidity content will tend to curl more during the fusing process. Envelope flaps will tend to seal more when the envelopes have higher humidity content. Selecting a lighter paper weight setting, within the driver or software, will increase envelope throughput; which will reduce flap sealing and curling issues, but toner bonding issues may increase. Selecting a heavier paper weight, within the driver or software, will reduce envelope throughput; which will increase flap sealing and curling issues, but toner bonding issue may be reduced. 3 Suggested - Printer Settings - to Obtain Faster Throughput on Envelopes The following settings will provide faster throughput; however toner bonding and image accuracy may be reduced. 1. [Menus - Print Adjust - Narrow Print Speed] = Normal2 (Default = slow) 2. Make sure MPT is configured, in the printer s menu, for the size and orientation of the media you are feeding. Y = length, from leading to trailing edge. X = width. 3. Make sure media is loaded in the MP Tray or feeder (feeding flap-first, long edge first). 4. Open or remove the face-up stacker door (left side of printer). Position optional conveyor at output. 5. If using optional feeder, make sure speed is set high to reduce lag in media presentation to the printer. Suggested - Printer Driver Settings - to Obtain Faster Throughput on Envelopes The following settings will provide faster throughput; however toner bonding and image accuracy may be reduced. 1. Choose or create a Custom Media Size (Example: Com-10 Custom) Note: The current driver comes with two selections for common envelope sizes (example: COM-10 and COM-10 Custom ). If you want faster throughput; please be sure to choose the Custom selection. 2. Set the Media Type to Plain. 3. Selecting any Media Weight setting, that is lower than the default (Medium Heavy), will increase the throughput. You will need to experiment to find the setting that provides the best throughput with acceptable toner bonding results. Rev. 12/27/2016 3

4 Suggested - mcolor 2 Workflow Settings - to Obtain Faster Throughput on #10 Envelopes The following mcolor 2 settings will provide faster throughput on #10 Envelopes; however toner adhesion and image accuracy may be reduced. If you are using a different envelopes size, you may need to use the Navigator RIP features to design and add a new Page Setup ; to meet your specific media size. This new Page Setup will become a new Configuration selection within the mcolor Client. Please contact Tier 2 support (Neopost DPG Team) for help. 1. Select the desired HD-CX Workflow. 2. Click on the wrench to Edit the Workflow. 3. Select the Direct Output (or RIP) Tab. Tip: Direct Output is the preferred (more efficient) output method. 4. Select one of the following Configurations, from the pull down list: a. Configuration: HD-CX Env 600 DPI for printing 600 x 600 DPI b. Configuration: HD-CX Env 1200 DPI for printing 1200 x 1200 DPI 5. Set the Paper Profile to match your media type. When using #10 envelopes it is common to select Commodity Envelopes 1200 or 600, but you can select any of the choices, in this pull-down list, that match your media type. Tip: Be sure the DPI (1200 or 600) reference matches your Configuration choice from the previous step. 6. Select the rotation (Rotate) to match the envelope feeding flap-first. You may need to experiment with this selection. After completing the mcolor 2 setup process, do a test print. If the orientation of the printed image doesn t match the feed direction (envelope feeding flap-first), make a different rotation selection and repeat until the desired result is obtained. 5 7. Click on the Configure button, located near Device: HD-CX. The Configure HD-CX window will open. 8. Set Media Size to Media size from Page Layout. 9. Set Tray to Multipurpose tray. 10. Set Media Type to Plain Paper. 11. Set Media Weight to any selection lower than Medium Heavy, to increase the output speed. You will need to experiment with the Media Weight selections. After completing the mcolor 2 setup process, send at least the first 10 pages of the job; to verify that the toner is bonding acceptably before you run your job. 12. Set the Spot Color selections as desired. Keep in mind that if you are using an HD-CX1700 with white spot color, you cannot select the Superposition Order Print toner under the color ; since this would be a two-pass process. Envelopes will be damaged if you try to use this process. If using clear spot color; your throughput will be reduced dramatically; due to the fact that it takes a longer time to bond clear toner. 13. Set Feed Edge to Long Edge. 14. Set Output Bin to Left, face up. 15. Set Constraints to your desired selection ( Warn and Continue or Abort ). 16. Makes sure Duplex is un-checked (not selected). 17. Set Collate as desired. 18. Make sure Media Check is un-checked (not selected). Rev. 12/27/2016 5
