2 INFORMATION ABOUT ASSESSMENT Purpose The purpose of this practical assessment is for you to demonstrate your electrical general practical skills and theoretical knowledge and to show that you can work safely and accurately to the industry requirements for this trade. Your performance in this task and your answers to trade-related questions will enable the assessor to determine your skills in this area. There will be at least four parts to the assessment. Topics include, but are not limited to: Safe Work practices The candidate must identify the protective device (source of supply) then sequence the appliance disconnection and re-connection activities in a safe logical order and must prove the circuit is de-energised prior to working on circuits that may be energised. Test must also be carried out to ensure appliance is safe for reconnection General Electrician skills practical Design and draw domestic style light and power circuitry Complete a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) also known as JSA (Job Safety Analysis) Design, draw and install a switchboard to suit Install and wire two circuits such as light and power back to the switch board Test and verify the installation including fault finding and record results to verify compliance or non- compliance Motor Control Motor control theory Components of AC and DC motors Design and draw motor and control circuits with appropriate circuit and appliance protection Connect and test above circuit Motor control circuits practical fault finding exercise Electrical Fundamentals AC and DC theory. o Electrical units and symbols o Ohm s Law o AC appliances such as transformers and motors o Impedance, inductive reactance and capacitive reactance calculations o Power factor o RMS and other sine wave values o Electrical circuit drawing and analysis AC and DC Circuit measurements practical o Design and connect an extra low voltage circuit which may include volt and ampere meters, lamps, resistors, inductors and capacitors. 3 INFORMATION ABOUT ASSESSMENT o Connect meters and measure values such as Voltage, Amperes and Wattage During any assessment, the assessor may also verbally ask some scenario based questions. 4 CANDIDATES - WHAT TO BRING Any device such as a mobile phone, recording device or camera, which stores information, can be used for communication or is able to connect to the internet, is not permitted in the assessment area. 7 NOTE: Testing the voltage tester for correct operation after use is critical when the candidate is going to touch the conductors/components in the belief they are de-energised. The following tests are critical Test the frame for LIVE Test voltage tester at known live source after use Test all conductors and earth before touching Do not leave any potentially live parts or conductors exposed and unattended Do not touch any potentially live parts or conductors Do not put yourself or anyone else in harm s way and do not create an unsafe scenario Failure in any of the above will result in an unsuccessful result. Fixed Wired Appliance Disconnection The candidate must sequence the appliance disconnection activities in a safe order and must prove the circuit is deenergised prior to working on circuits that may be energised. Step 1 Ready to work safely 1.1 Has the Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) been filled out correctly? 1.2 Is the applicant wearing correct PPE? Glasses, Safety Boots, Gloves, long sleeves etc. 1.3 Does the applicant have the appropriate insulated tools, cat3 voltage tester and lock out equipment? Note IR tester needs to be an analogue type not digital. 1.4 If any of the above are answered no DO NOT PROCEED Step 2 Notifying personnel 2.1 Introduce yourself to the site supervisor. 2.2 Personnel in the immediate area are notified that you are commencing disconnection and there may be an interruption to supply 2.3 Are there any essential services that may be affected by disconnection of supply? 2.4 Is there any pedestrian traffic? 8 Step 3 Ensuring the appliance frame is not energised 3.1 Ensure that when inserting voltmeter probes in to a socket out for known source test, Insert the last probe in to the active and remove the first probe from the active. 3.2 Test the voltage tester BEFORE use 3.3 Establish an effective earth 3.4 Test the appliance frame for LIVE between frame and known earth 3.5 Test the voltage tester for correct operation AFTER use 3.6 Measure the continuity of the earth to the equipment 3.7 Question? What would you do if a known earth reference point is not nearby? 3.8 Question? When testing frame to see if it is live, what would you do if the frame was live? 3.9 Ensure that meter leads are not left in the socket outlet when not in use Step 4 Identifying the appliance 4.1 Correctly note the appliance details Details must be clear enough to be understood by others. 4.2 Note the direction of rotation of appliance (if applicable). Ask if safe to start motor first. Step 5 Placing danger tags 5.1 Place the appropriate danger tags at the switchboard AND the appliance AND the circuit breaker or fuse. Tape should not be used to affix danger tags. 5.2 Clearly complete the details, sign and date each danger tag. Details must be clear enough to be understood by others. 5.3 Declare that you have taken ownership of the area you are working. 9 Step 6 Isolating the appliance 6.1 Is it safe to switch power to the appliance on? 6.2 Test the voltage tester BEFORE use 6.3 Test that supply exists at appliance terminals prior to isolation procedure (For motors, check at live side of contactor) 6.4 Replace the cover while locating circuit protective device Step 7 Testing the appliance for live supply 7.1 Test the voltage tester BEFORE use 7.2 Test for voltage between ALL conductors and the known earth 7.3 Test for voltage between ALL circuit conductors. 7.4 Test the voltage tester for correct operation AFTER it was used to prove there was no live supply detected 7.5 Ensure that meter leads are not left in the socket outlet when not in use 7.3 Replace the cover while locating circuit protective device Step 8 Locking off the circuit 8.1 Lock off all necessary circuit protection devices Correct circuit breaker must be locked, with the key removed. Site requirements also require the isolator to be locked with the Key removed. When using lock dogs on circuit breakers, do not over tighten thus damaging the circuit breaker. 8.2 Remove appropriate fuse element or cartridge, place insulation tape around wedge and re-insert in fuse base (if applicable) 8.3 Draw a diagram indicating position of protective devices on switchboard (noting current rating). Drawing must be clear enough to be understood by others. 8.4 Draw a diagram of the terminal connections of the appliance. Drawing must be clear enough to be understood by others. 10 Step 9 Disconnecting / terminating circuit conductors 9.1 Disconnect the conductors with the earthing conductor being the last to be disconnected. If spade lugs are used, grip on connector, not conductor to remove from terminal. 9.2 Fully insulate all disconnected cable ends. Use insulated screwed connectors and tape for bare conductors. Use insulated tape for spade lugs. 9.3 Suitably place all disconnected conductors in a junction box. 9.4 Place diagram in junction box 9.5 Suitably mechanically protect junction box 9.6 Place a signed danger tag on the junction box Step 10 Clean-up and notify personnel and paperwork 10.1 Clean up the work area and notify personnel that the job is complete Step 11 (Not required for 457 / OTSR) Victoria Polytechnic, TAFE Division of Victoria University CRICOS Provider No K (Melbourne) 02475D (Sydney) RTO Code: 3113 ver009 Page 6 of 9

Conditions may have changed since the last time you were on site Check that the protective devices have not been tampered with at the switchboard & retag if necessary Is there any pedestrian traffic? Do I need to barricade the area? Step14 Switchboard details 14.1 Check that the protective devices have not been tampered with at the switchboard & retag if necessary. Step15 Appliance details 15.1 Check that the protective devices have not been tampered with at the switchboard & retag if necessary Declare that you have taken ownership of the area you are working. 12 Step 16 Appliance testing 16.1 Test the insulation resistance tester for correct operation Correctly carry out the earth continuity resistance test of the appliance frame to the appliance earth connection point Test the insulation resistance tester for correct operation 16.4 Correctly carry out the insulation resistance test of the appliance Is the appliance safe to connect? Explain the reason for your answer note: if the answer to 16.5 is no and you are asked to connect a second appliance, the step 16 needs to be repeated for the second appliance. Step 17 Testing the conductors for live supply 17.1 Test the voltage tester BEFORE it was used to test for no live supply on the circuit conductors Test for voltage between ALL conductors and the known earth 17.3 Test for voltage between ALL circuit conductors Test the voltage tester for correct operation AFTER it was used to prove there was no live supply detected 17.5 Ensure that meter leads are not left in the socket outlet when not in use 17.6 Did the candidate at any time make contact with the terminals of the circuit conductors prior to the completion of the procedure as completed in section 17 Victoria Polytechnic, TAFE Division of Victoria University CRICOS Provider No K (Melbourne) 02475D (Sydney) RTO Code: 3113 ver009 Page 8 of 9
13 Step18 Reconnect the appliance 18.1 Reconnect the appliance in a safe manner. The earthing conductor being the FIRST to be connected. Step 19 Testing the earth continuity of the appliance Test the insulation resistance tester for correct operation 19.2 Carry out an earth resistance test from the known earth to the appliance frame AFTER the circuit wiring is reconnected and BEFORE supply is restored to the appliance Did the earth resistance test pass or fail? Explain the reason for your answer. Step 20 Restoring power to the appliance 20.1 Ensure that all relevant personnel are notified prior to reconnection of supply to the appliance 20.2 Test the voltage tester BEFORE it was used to test for live supply Ensure that the correct supply is available at the appliance terminals. Test for voltage between ALL conductors and the known earth note: for motors test at live side of contactor Ensure that the correct supply is available at the appliance terminals. Test for voltage between ALL circuit conductors Ask if it is safe to turn on the appliance Ensure that the direction of rotation is correct (if applicable) If direction of rotation is not correct, how would you change direction?
