1 PURPOSE AND APPLICATION Connection Unit Guide The connection unit is an installation friendly device, which makes it possible to use all features from a central unit. The CU can also be used to connect units in a network. The CU comprises the following features: RS485 to RS232 conversion. An external relay to provide extended security. Battery support to prevent reset of a system during short power dips, and a recharge circuit for this battery. RS485 connections. 4 I/Os. Output for an additional relay. Power output for Infra Red port to operate Palm (future). 2 MOUNTING THE CONNECTION UNIT The following picture shows how to mount the connection unit to the wall. Wall plugs type S5 (not provided by Northern) Recommended hole dimensions for the plugs: Ø5 and 35mm deep. 3 INSTALLATION The following picture shows the layout of the terminals and DIP-Switch of the printed circuit board assembly. To the terminals the inputs and outputs are connected. The DIP-Switch is used to enable certain features of the connection unit. The RS232 Interface (J6) is only for the advanced version, and can be used to connect the Infra red device or to communicate with the PC. See the table for the connections if you have to make a RS232 cable yourself. Connect to these terminals a transient suppressor (1500W / 16V) as well to suppress high voltage transients when the relay switches. From snap on battery connector. 4 EXTERNAL RELAY The connection unit is provided with an external relay (REL1). The maximum switching values for this relay are mentioned in the table below. Requirements for programming the external relay function are: Installer programmer, or manage software. at installer level (Level 1). Present the installer programmer to the, go to program mode and press 23*2*, or alternatively change this parameter in the parameter tab of the manage software. With the external relay function programmed, the door lock is now switched by REL1 instead of being switched by the itself. This function prevents the possibility of unauthorized admittance due to potential tampering. If switch S6 of SW1 is set to ON, REL1 will be activated by the Normally open or Normally closed option in the parameter tab of Manage. ADDITIONAL RELAY If switching to a higher current is required, connect an additional relay to pin RELOUT of terminal J4. The additional relay function is used to reach a higher level of security. Output RELOUT on terminal J4 is an open collector output with a maximum current capacity of 50 ma. This output is not shortcut protected. I/Os The four different I/Os can also be used by connecting these I/Os to terminal J3. These outputs can be used in three different ways: Use as I/O. Use for Magstripe output. Use for Wiegand output. 5 BATTERY Only in case of short power dips, a battery can be used temporarily to maintain the operation of the system. The Real Time Clock will keep running and all events will be saved. This battery must be connected to terminal J1 of the connection unit. This battery can be used when a stand-alone or advanced is used. Switch S4 of SW1 must be set to ON to use the battery. When switch S5 of SW1 is set to ON, the battery will automatically be recharged. At that moment, the battery may not be used to support the system. A 9 Volt PP3 housing Rechargeable Nickel Metal Hybrid (NiMH) is recommended as battery. Do not set switch S5 of SW1 to ON when a non-rechargeable battery is used. Do not set switches S4 and S5 of SW1 to ON when no battery is used. CONNECTING UNITS IN A NETWORK When building a RS485 network the connection unit is the perfect tool to connect the to the computer AWG22 twisted pair cable is recommended to use in the RS485 network. Furthermore it is convenient to give each unit a name by which it can be easily recognized. One way to change the addresses is to connect the units to a PC before mounting them on their final place. Alternatively you can use an Installer remote programmer and enter parameter 28*NNN* to change the address. NNN is the address in this parameter. The address can be set from TD1167 rev

6 Take the following steps to change the address: 1. Connect the unit via an advanced connection unit (CU) to a PC (see the following figure). Log on to the unit via the Manage PC application. 3. Change the address and name of the unit. Please refer to the Users manual for Manage on how to change the address and name. It is convenient to attach a label to each unit with its name and address. 4. Repeat the previous steps for every unit that will be part of your network. When all the units have been uniquely identified, you can connect the units in a network. The following figure shows how to do so. 6-8 TD1167 rev1003

8 The 485B-2 connection of the previous connection unit must be connected to 485B-1 of the next connection unit. The 485A-2 connection of the previous connection unit must be connected to 485A-1 of the next connection unit. DIP-SWITCH (SW1) EXPLANATION S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 S6 S7 S8 The RS485 bus is terminated by a 120 Ohm resistor when switch S1 of SW1 is set to ON. S1 should only be set to ON at the beginning and the end of a RS485 bus. If switch S2 of SW1 is set to ON, RS485 bias + is connected to +5V via a 10K resistor. By default, S2 is set to ON. If switch S3 of SW1 is set to ON, RS485 bias - is connected to via a 10K resistor. By default, S3 is set to ON. Set switch S4 of SW1 to ON only when a battery is used. A battery recharge circuit becomes active when switch S5 of SW1 is set to ON. The external relay (REL 1) on the connection unit will be activated when relay out of the is programmed for coded signal and switch S6 of SW1 is set to OFF. If S6 is set to ON, REL1 will be activated by the Normally open or Normally closed option in the parameter tab of Manage. If the baud rate of the reader is set to another value than the default one of 9600, S7 must be set to ON. S7 set to OFF, baud rate is 9600, set to ON 19K2. For future use.
