3 1. General Description The BT3 series temperature controllers are excellently suitable for cooling and heating applications. The excellent characteristics are the following: Very precise temperature acquisition by PTC- probe (1000 Ω) or PT100- probe according to model. The probe can be placed distant to the controller ( i.e. 50 m), but a wire gauge of at least 1,0 mm² should be used. Parameter locking to avoid unauthorized user inputs. Relay for Alarm: To signalise i.e. probe failure. Relay for temperature control that is switched OFF immediately in case of probe failure. Easy set-up because of clearly arranged parameters. Settings are persistent (EEProm) and will be restored after supply recovery. PC-serial interface (RS-485) for remote control. Up to 32 controllers may be connected to 1 data line. Installation und Mounting 4.1 Preface Operating temperature: 0 to +50 C Storage Temperature: -20 to +80 C Relative humidity: 30 to + 85% r.h., non-condensing Panel mounting IP43 Self-extinguishing (UL 94 V0) PA- plastic- housing Connection to terminal block with wire gauge up to 2,5 mm² and 1,5mm² if wire-terminals are used. The controller must be installed in a place where it is protected from extreme vibration, water and corrosive medium. The ambient conditions must not exceed the values indicated in the technical data paragraph. This is also valid for the probe. 4.2 Temperature probe The probe must be installed in a place that is not exposed to direct air flow in order to obtain the average temperature of the room. 4.3 Electrical connections We recommend to protect the power supply of the controller from electrical noise, spikes etc. This can be easily done following these guidelines. Do not supply the controller directly from the same source as you supply the loads. The cables of the probe must be kept distant to wires connected to loads. 4.4 Application in critical environment For applications in critical industrial environment the following guidelines should be usefull: Use a line filter if there are devices generating high voltage/frequency disturbances. Put an RC- filter (SNUBBER) parallel to the coils of the load. Connect the probe via shielded cable, the shield should be connected to ground. 5 4.5 Mounting The instruments of the BT-series are flush panel mounted. We recommend to have enough space on the back to avoid stress on the cables. To avoid damage of the terminals the wire gauge must not exceed 2,5mm². P0 remains accessible. 5.3 Display functions 3 digits, 14mm high, red 7-elements LED display The acquired temperature is displayed, while the controller is regularly working In case of malfunction error codes are shown During programming parameter numbers and values are displayed. 6. Maintenance Alarm- relay activated depends on P Cleaning The housing may be cleaned with a soft tissue moistened with soapsuds. Don not use any kind of cleaning agents, petrol or solvents. 6.2 Repairing All repairing must be done by authorized people. Warranty is void if the housing is opened or the seal is removed! 6.3 Calibration Each device is calibrated automatically in production. If nevertheless incorrect temperature values should be displayed, the connections of the probe should be checked first wires clamps and insulation. 7 7. Parameter- Settings 7.1 Programming- Procedure Push the SET- button for more than 1s to activate the programming mode. P 0 will be displayed. Furthermore LED1 is lit (left point). The -, - buttons help to select a parameter. On pushing the SET- button the value of the parameter is displayed, that may be now modified using the -, and - buttons. The display starts flashing if a parameter has been modified. SET must be pushed another time to validate and store the modified value. Programming mode is terminated if for 10 seconds no key is pushed. Remark: Most parameter modifications become effective when made, except P8 and P13 which are timers, a new value of this parameter is used first when the timer is started next time. P 1: Set point difference (Hysteresis) P0 ± P1 2 nd set point. P 2, P 3: Set point limits Lower and upper set point limit the the set point must be within these limits. 8 P 4: Temperature scale 0= Temperatures are displayed in C, 1= Temperatures are transformed into F. P 5: Thermostatfunktion 0= Cooling, 1= Heating. P 6: Probe correction/offset (at 0 C) Value must increased if a lower temperature than the real is displayed. Parameter can be used to correct the influence of long wires. P 7: Probe correction/gain (at 50 C) If calibration at 0 C is correct the parameter, can help to correct probe variation of the sensitivity. A higher value leads to higher sensitivity. P 8: Alarmverzögerung Delay of alarm relay activation. P 9: Temperature- Alarmmode Alarm if: 0 = temperature is lower than lower set point limit 1 = temperature is higher than upper set point limit 2 = temperature is not within lower and upper set point limits. P 10: Function mode of the alarm 0 = Alarm- relay closed in case of alarm 1 = Alarm- relay open in case of alarm. P 11: Step of power-on-set-point-management Power-on-set-point-management calculates temporary set points to avoid over shots. A successive temporary set point is for P11 closer to the final set point P0. P 12: Start value for power-on-set-point-management P0 ± P12 = first temporary set point while power-on-set-point-management is active. P 13: Delay time for power-on-set-point-management Power-on-set-point-management waits for this time before applying the next temporary set point. 8. Error Codes MESSAGE REASON LO Temperature alarm. Temperature is lower than lower setpoint limit. HI Temperature alarm. Temperature is higher than upper setpoint limit. PPP Probe failure (short circuit or broken wire) (Aquired temperature is out of range < -50 C or > 150 C/200 C/400 C) EEE EEPROM Error. Invalid programm data. In this case the controller is blocked, all rely are switched off. Remark: A controller being blocked because of a probe failure ( PPP ) or EEPROM- error ( EEE ) can be restarted by pushing the buttons and SET together for 5 seconds. 9. Serial Interface (RS-485) The serial interface provides remote data acquisition and setting of the user parameters. To each serial-bus-line can be connected up to 32 devices. The lines must be terminated with 2 120Ω- resistors. A suitable Windows- Program (Beta21) is available from Dieter Wirth, Mess & Regeltechnik.
