Industry-standard x86 compute nodes on PureFlex System IBM X-Architecture : These compute nodes come with Intel Xeon microprocessors and provide the function, reliability, and performance of the X-Architecture systems in a small-form-factor design. They support a variety of Microsoft Windows, Linux, and VMware operating systems and are ideally suited for high-performance and virtualized environments such as memory-intensive computing, collaboration, general and mission-critical processing, and enterprise application workloads. All models come with an integrated management module (IMM) that connects to the Chassis Management Module to provide the integrated systems-management functions for the node. IBM PureFlex System Intel compute node is a new category of computing that integrates networking, storage and advanced system management capability into a single system that is easy to deploy and manage. The IBM PureFlex System Intel compute node helps clients consolidate, improve service, reduce costs and manage risk. The IBM PureFlex System Intel compute node The IBM PureFlex System Intel compute node Types 7863, 8737, and 8738 is a high-density, scalable compute node that is ideally suited for high-performance and virtualized environments. The Intel compute node consists of: Two Intel Xeon E5 processors with up to 8 processor cores of up to 2.9 GHz 24 slots supporting up to 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory DIMMs Two hot-swap, SFF SAS, SATA, or SSD storage drives Dual 10-Gigabit Ethernet connections Storage node The IBM PureFlex System storage node includes a Storwize V7000 Unified storage controller with space for up to 24 disks with a maximum capacity of 900 GB SAS or 300 GB solid-state drives (SSDs) each. This allows for a gross data volume of up to 21 TB within a very compact space. Attachment to compute nodes is done using a fast internal network without peripheral equipment and complexity. PureFlex System: An ideal platform for enterprise The IBM PureFlex System Enterprise Chassis is a 10U next-generation server platform with integrated chassis management. It is a compact, high-density, high-performance, rack-mount, scalable server platform system. It supports up to 14 compute nodes that can share common resources, such as power, cooling, management, and I/O resources within a single IBM PureFlex System Enterprise Chassis. IBM PureFlex System Intel compute node servers are designed for high throughput all the way from processor to memory to I/O. These features, combined with symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) capability and blade-thin density, make it an excellent choice for today s space- and power-constrained data centers. The following features help make PureFlex System an ideal consolidation platform: Hot-swap compute nodes enable easy access to each node server. Storage node with the Storwize V7000 Unified controller with optional expandable external storage provides ample I/O capacity and performance for consolidation of complex database workloads. 2

The management module interfaces with each node server for single systems management control. PureFlex System configuration used in this project PureFlex System Management Chassis: Model Type X Two 16A/ V PDUs One Qlogic 8 Gb (14 internal port, 6 external port) Fibre Channel switch One BNT 1 Gb (14/28 internal, 10/20 external) ports Ethernet switch Blade server: Model Type 8737 Two Intel Xeon E GHz 8-core processors 64 GB of memory Two Emulex OneConnect OCl11102-F-X 10GigE Network Adapter Two Emulex 95Y Gbps host bus adapters (HBAs) IBM Storwize V7000 Unified configuration Twelve 600GB K rpm HDD Two 8 GB cache Microsoft software tested on the configuration Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise x64 Edition Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP2 Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP2 Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP2 is the currently available version of Exchange Server. One of the big improvements in Exchange Server 2010, over Exchange Server 2007, is the increase in efficiency in terms of disk read/write performance. Exchange Server 2010 requires fewer disks to support the same load as would Exchange Server This makes it possible to deploy much larger databases on larger, less expensive SATA disks. Environment as tested Two blade servers provide high availability for the Exchange environment. Each C4240 M4 blade server is installed in a multi-role configuration (each server is installed with the mailbox role, the CAS role, and the HUB role). On the Storwize V7000 Unified storage system, two storage pools provide isolation between the mailbox databases and their log files. Isolating the mailbox databases and log files improves performance. Two additional servers are used as a domain controller and domain name server (DNS) and to simulate load for the 2,000 user mailboxes. 3

Figure 2. Test environment Best practices for sizing Exchange Server 2010 on the PureFlex System The Exchange Mailbox Server role is arguably the most important role within an Exchange deployment because it stores the data that users will ultimately access on a daily basis. Therefore, ensuring that you design the mailbox server role correctly is critical to your design. Microsoft provides the Exchange 2010 Mailbox Server Role Requirements Calculator to help correctly determine the number of servers and amount of storage necessary to support the required workload. IBM testing has found this tool to be extremely accurate and highly recommends it be used for sizing your environment. The Exchange 2010 Mailbox Server Role Calculator can be downloaded at: 4

Best practices for running Exchange Server 2010 on Storwize V7000 Unified The follow list outlines the best practices Format the Database and Log volumes at 64k allocation unit size, as recommended by Microsoft. Isolate Exchange Server database and log files from other disk-intensive application workloads to avoid performance conflicts. Sharing the storage with other applications might have a negative impact on Exchange I/O performance. Isolate Exchange Database and Log disk I/O on separate, physical disk arrays. Although an Exchange 2010 DAG configuration allows logs and databases on the same LUN, this isolation allows separate log and database disk tuning. With the Storwize V7000 Unified storage system, the database and log logical units (LUNs) can be separated physically on different disks by using separate Storage Pools. The Storwize V7000 Unified storage system has a default of and has been optimized for 8 disk arrays (MDisks). The Storwize V7000 Unified storage system can use external virtualized storage, which are external storage systems connected to the Storwize V7000 in a manner similar to the IBM SAN Volume Controller software. In this configuration, do not assign multiple backend storage systems to the same storage pool. Each external system should have its own storage pools. For most Exchange 2010 environments, Microsoft recommends hardware level RAID 5 for databases and RAID 10 for the logs. RAID 5 for databases provides better space utilization when using larger mailboxes (more than 1 GB), provided there are adequate disks for the I/O requirements. Enable read/write caching on the Storwize V7000 Unified storage system when creating the Volumes. Note that the cache option is either read/write combined or no caching at all. The recommend disk stripe size for Exchange 2010 is 256 KB (or larger). The default stripe size on the Storwize V7000 Unified storage system is 256 KB. For additional best practices, tuning, and troubleshooting recommendations see the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified information center, at: Troubleshooting performance on the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified storage system is performed using standard tools such as Performance Monitor, or the monitoring features of the HBA software. These tools help determine where the heaviest disk I/O is occurring, as well as the data transfer rates. Assuming all storage components are functioning and configured correctly, most Exchange Server 2010 storage latency issues are caused by an insufficient number of disks for the I/O load. You can measure the number of IOPS to a given drive using the Performance Monitor Logical Disk object, Disk Transfers/sec counter. Add the data from all database volumes to find the total IOPS being generated. 5

The average disk latency should be less than 20 ms, with the maximum value no higher than 100 ms. You can measure disk latency using the Performance Monitor Logical Disk object, Avg. Disk sec/read counter. 6

Summary The IBM PureFlex System is an ideal platform for consolidating existing Microsoft Exchange Server instances. The superior performance of the compute nodes with Intel Xeon E5 processors, large amount of memory, and outstanding I/O and networking infrastructure makes the platform powerful enough to host the most-demanding of Exchange Server workloads. With up to 14 of these Exchange Server instances in a 10U chassis and central integrated management, the platform can help significantly save space in datacenter and cooling and power costs.
