User Manual v1.10 Hookie AM20 Activity Meter Hookie AM20 Activity Meter Appendix 1: Operating instructions and troubleshooting LED behaviour in measurement mode The device operation is indicated by two LEDs: a green and a red LED. When the device is working properly and is in measurement mode, the LEDs operate in following ways: o Green LED is on: o Green LED is blinking: o Red LED is blinking o Both LEDs are off: Device is initializing peripherals, memory management and FAT- file system or performing memory related tasks. Device is measuring and storing acceleration data. Device is measuring and storing acceleration data, but either battery voltage or free data space is low. Device is in sleep mode. In a case where device is in measurement mode but is not measuring data, the LEDs indicate the following situations. o Both LEDs are on: o Both LEDs are off: Initialization of memory management and/or FAT- file system has failed and device is unable to enter the measurement mode. Battery voltage or free data space is too low and the acceleration data measurement and storing is disabled. Device needs to be plugged into an USB- port. LED behaviour in USB- mode When the device is attached to an USB- bus, the green LED is lit during the initialization process. When the host computer recognizes the device, the green LED begins to indicate the state of the battery charging process the following way: o Green LED is on: The battery is being charged. o Green LED is off: The battery is fully charged. LED behaviour in bootloader- mode When the device is disconnected from the USB- bus and bootloader- mode is enabled successfully, the red LED is lit. When device is attached to the USB bus and the host computer recognizes the device successfully, both LEDs are blinking alternately. Any other LED- blinking scheme indicates that the device has not properly enumerated and the firmware cannot be updated.

File system operations When performing certain file system operations such as format to the Activity Meter with a host computer there is certain restriction that the user should be aware of. - The device should only be formatted with the quick format option that only formats the necessary sections of the file system. (The regular format will fill also the data section of the memory with zeros, which not only is not necessary in the case of a NAND flash device but will also consume a considerable amount of time and cause unnecessary wear of the memory.) - When formatting the device only the following settings can be used. (Failing to do so will result in file system corruption) o File system: FAT16 o Allocation unit size: 4096 bytes - While the Activity Meter s file system does not support directories when in measurement mode, directories can be created and managed by host computer with no effect to the measurement mode performance of the device. Device handling Although the Hookie AM20 Activity Meter is very much a self- reliant device, there are some things concerning the device handling that the user has to be aware of in order to ensure the proper operation of the device. - Do not detach the device from the USB- bus while the device is performing write operations. Failing to do so may result in the corruption of the FAT- file system and/or the memory management data. (In Windows- based systems this can be avoided by using the Safely Remove Hardware option) - Do not unplug the battery for this may result in loss of recent measurement data or worse, corruption of the FAT- file system and memory management data. (If the battery needs to be removed, please do it while the device is either plugged to the USB- bus or is in sleep mode)

Opening the device Pull firmly from the both ends of the device to extend the elastic cord holding the cap in place When extended enough turn the cap away from USB connector Device is now ready to connect to the computer or attach to the belt or belt loop

Troubleshooting 1. Device is connected to a USB- port, but is not recognized by the operating system. o Try another USB- port. USB- connector of the device may not get proper contact. o Try to clean the USB- connector of the device with a soft cloth. 2. Device is recognized by the operating system but appears as an unknown USB- device. o Try to update the driver manually. (In Windows- based operating systems this can be done via the Device Manager ). 3. FAT- file system of the device is corrupted. o Perform a low- level format for the device. (See Appendix 2 for further instructions). 4. Device doesn t measure acceleration data though battery voltage is sufficient and free data space is available. o Connected the device to USB- port and then disconnect it. If this doesn t help, perform a low- level format for the device. (See Appendix 2 for further instructions).

Appendix 2: Settings file The Hookie AM20 Activity Meter has a dedicated settings file for adjusting the most crucial parameters of the device operation. These settings and their implications are documented here. When modifying the settings file, user must make sure that the new values are written over the old values with exactly the same format. Failing to do so can cause the settings to be initialized to factory settings. So make sure that the parameter value format is correct and the file size is unchanged. Note that settings file is a hidden file so in order to access it user should make hidden files visible from the operating systems properties. In order to make modifications to the file, some operating system may also require that the hidden attribute from the file properties of the file is disabled. Once the file is modified, hidden - attribute does not need to be enabled. The device will do that automatically once unplugged from the USB- port. Parameter: Default value S/N: HTV Date: Description Unique serial number of a device. This value is read- only. Date of the real- time clock. Can be updated by writing a new value over the old and setting the parameter Update time & date to one. Note that the new time is updated to the real- time clock when the device is unplugged from the USB- port. Also the current time of the clock is updated to the settings file when the device is attached to the USB- port. Time: 00:00:00 Activity threshold: 003 Inactivity threshold: 008 Time of the real- time clock. Time can be set the same way as date. Activity threshold of the acceleration sensor. When the acceleration value is above the threshold, sensor starts to measure data. Valid parameter values are between , where one unit equals 62,5mg. Inactivity threshold of the acceleration sensor, which along with the parameter Inactivity time sets the power- saving operation of the sensor. Valid parameter values are between , where one unit equals 62,5mg.

Inactivity time: 005 Data rate: 100Hz Acceleration coupling: AC Datafile max.size: KB Data compression: 0 Update time & date: 0 Format device: 0 When the sensor inactivity is below the threshold value set by the Inactivity threshold parameter for a time set by Inactivity time, the device stops measuring the acceleration data and enters a low- power sleep- mode. Valid parameter values are between , where unit is seconds. Number of measurements the acceleration sensor performs in a second. Valid values are 50 and 100. A parameter for detecting sensor activity. When the parameter is set to AC, the sensor compares the new acceleration values to old ones and compares the difference of those values to the activity and inactivity thresholds and performs the corresponding actions if necessary. With the parameter value DC the sensor compares the acceleration data directly to the aforementioned thresholds and responds accordingly. Maximum file size for the acceleration data files. Valid parameter values are between , where unit is kilobytes. Enables data compression when parameter value is set to 1. Parameter value 0 disables the compression and raw data is stored. Valid parameter values are 0 and 1. When the parameter value is set to 1 the values set to parameters Time and Date are updated to the real- time clock. The time is updated when device is disconnected from the USB port. Valid parameter values are 0 and 1. When the parameter value is set to 1 the device performs a low- level format when detached from the USB- bus. The format erases every block of the flash- memory and re- initializes the memory management data and FAT- file system. Valid parameter values are 0 and 1.

Enter bootloader: 0 When this parameter value is set to 1 and the device is disconnected from the USB- bus, the device enters a bootloader - mode where device firmware can be updated. Valid parameter values are 0 and 1. Note that in order to update the device firmware, an appropriate PC- software is required. Device can only exit from the bootloader- mode with the help of this software, so do not enter the bootloader- mode unless you have the software. Run self- test: 0 Battery voltage: 4.00V When this parameter value is set to 1 and the device disconnected from the USB- bus, the device performs a self- test and creates a test- log. Valid parameter values are 0 and 1. Displays the current battery voltage of the device. Value can range between 3,20V and 4,20V. This value is read- only. Note that the battery voltage is only written to the settings file when device is attached to the USB port and the value is not updated while battery is being charged. Also if device battery is depleted, the value in the settings file may be incorrect.
