2 1.0 Introduction 1.01 The VOL-0206/VOL-0208 Media Converter Plug-in Cards and the VOL-0205/VOL-0207 Standalone Media Converter Units convert 100Mbit/s Fast Ethernet copper based signals into corresponding 100Mbit/s fiber optic signals according to IEEE802.3u. The VOL-0205/VOL are based on 850nm (SX) technology and the VOL-0207/VOL-0208 are based on 1300nm (FX) technology These converters support both full-duplex and half-duplex modes of operation and are simple to install The VOL-0206 and VOL-0208 plug-in cards are installed in and powered by the VOL inch rack mounted chassis. The VOL-0205 and VOL-0207 stand-alone units are powered by an external power adapter, supplied with each unit. 2.0 Universal Rack Mounted Chassis 2.01 The VOL-0213 rack mounted chassis is a 3U high enclosure designed to fit into a 19 inch electronic equipment rack. 6 4.0 Theory of operation 4.01 Volition media converters are fully transparent to the data and support both half and full duplex modes of operation. The MLT3 encoded UTP signal is converted to a 4B/5B fiber optic signal and vice versa. These media converters ensure that the signaling schemes are compatible with existing TX and FX interfaces The copper interface is a 100BaseTX UTP RJ-45 and the fiber interface is either a 100BaseSX VF-45 or a 100BaseFX VF Installation 5.01 Follow these steps to install the media converters. 1. Install the VOL-0206 or VOL-0208 in the VOL-0213 (19 inch rack) and connect the VOL-0213 to the mains power. Connect the external power adapter to the VOL-0205 or VOL These media converters may be used at the workstation as well as in the closet. When connecting to a workstation use a straight Cat 5 UTP cable. When connecting to a switch use a cross-over Cat 5 UTP cable. 3. Set the connected ports on the networking equipment to 100Mbit/s and either half or full duplex mode, both sides should be in identical mode. For optimum performance, manually set the workstation(s) attached to the media converters to full duplex and 100Mbs, Note autonegotiation must be disabled on both sides, at the workstation and switch. The UTP LINK LED should be ON. 4. Attach the fiber cable to the optical connector: If the fiber link is connected properly, the Fiber Optic LINK LED should be ON. A 100BaseTX port of a switch is connected to the VOL-0206 or VOL-0208 and a workstation or remote network server is connected to the VOL-0205 or VOL Fiber optic cable between the converters enables the user to expand the distance between the switch and the remote unit. Technical Tips Since most switches and network adapter cards employ 10/100Mbit/s auto-negotiation and all fiber media converters are either 10Mbit/s or 100Mbit/s, it is important to ensure that proper mode of operation is set to match the media converters being used. To ensure proper operation with the Volition 100Mbit/s media converters, manually set the corresponding networking equipment to either half or full duplex and disable auto-negotiation. Today, all 100Mbit/s media converters may only be used in a switched Ethernet environment. If used in a shared Ethernet environment, the network will experience collisions and delays. 7
