3 1 Safety Message to Installers, Users, and Maintenance Personnel It is important to follow all instructions shipped with this product. This device is to be installed by a trained electrician who is thoroughly familiar with the National Electrical Code and will follow the NEC Guidelines as well as local codes. This device may be considered a part of the signaling system and not the entire signaling system. The selection of the mounting location for the device, its controls and the routing of the wiring are to be done under the direction of the facilities engineer. In addition, listed below are some other important safety instructions and precautions you should follow: Read and understand all instructions before installing or operating this equipment. Do not connect this light to the system when power is on. After installation, ensure that all screws and threaded joints are properly tightened. After installation, test the light system to ensure that it is operating properly. After testing is complete, provide a copy of this instruction sheet to all operating personnel. Establish a procedure to routinely check the light installation for integrity and proper operation. To prevent potential danger to persons or damage to production equipment resulting from a failure or fault of the signaling device, additional safety precautions (limit switch, protection device, etc.) are necessary. Failure to follow all safety precautions and instructions may result in property damage, serious injury, or death to you or others.

4 2 Overview Overview The Federal Signal 810D Series Double Obstruction Light mounts directly to conduit risers and can be combined with a transfer relay for lamp backup. There is no alarm indication function in this light. This light must be used only with the specified wattage lamp. An optional FAA photoelectric controller can be used to provide automatic lighting activation at dusk in accordance with FAA specifications. If the equipment has been damaged, do not attempt to install or operate it. File a claim immediately with the carrier stating the extent of the damage. Carefully check all envelopes, shipping labels and tags before removing or destroying them. SHOCK HAZARD Disconnect all power before installing or servicing equipment. Contact with high voltage will result in personnel injury or death.

5 Mounting the Fixture Installing a Lamp 3 The fixture must be leveled so the lamp is in a vertical position base-down perpendicular to the mounting surface. A small circular level can be used with the lens removed. If necessary, loosen the three screws that secure the upper head subassembly to the conduit, adjust the position as required and retighten the screws " 13.30" DEPTH: 5.00" 290A6124 Figure 1: Dimensions of double obstruction light Installing a Lamp The fixture is shipped assembled with the lamp installed, if included. To replace a lamp: 1. Remove the clamp band securing the red lens. 2. Remove the hex nut securing the wire tether to the lens and remove the tether from the stud. 3. Screw (turning clockwise) down the lamp until it is firmly seated. Ensure that the O-ring is in its groove. 4. Secure the lens with the clamp band. 5. Reattach the tether and tighten the nut.

6 4 Making Electrical Connections Making Electrical Connections SHOCK HAZARD To avoid electrical shock hazards, do not connect wires when power is applied. Contact with high voltage will result in personnel injury or death. 1. Thread the fixture s hub to the properly sized conduit. 2. The white (blue) wire is attached to the lamp socket shell. Splice it to the system neutral (zero potential). 3. Splice the black wire to the black system line. Make splices using proper electrical practices in suitable splice box per NEC and local codes. NOTE: The green or green/yellow ground wire is pre-wired to each lamp socket. 5. The ground wire should be spliced to the system ground using proper electrical practices per NEC and local codes. 810 DET Option with Transfer Relay The transfer relay is pre-wired to the lights. The operating lamp s black (line) wire is passed through the toroid three times for a 116-watt, 120-volt lamp. This provides current sensing at the proper level. Do not use any other lamp than the type specified for this fixture. There is no alarm function. When a lamp fails, the standby lamp immediately turns on. When a lamp is replaced, the original operating condition is restored automatically. 810D P Option with Photocell The photocell installed to the obstruction light as option 810D P is used for automatic switching of the obstruction light in accordance with FAA specifications. The photocell is factory calibrated to energize at 35 footcandles and de-energizes at 60 foot-candles. The UV stabilized polypropylene subassembly is side mounted to the fixture body. There is a built-in thermal time delay relay.

7 Table 2: 810D-P Series specifications 810D P Option with Photocell 5 Operating Power: Contact Rating and Type Light Activation Level 120 volts +/- 10%, 50/60 Hz 1000 watts, SPST, Normally Closed ON at 35 foot-candles and OFF at 60 foot-candle Mounting the Photocell The photocell must have a clear view of the sky without obstructions, nor should the unit be subject to the shadows of surrounding structures. To avoid cycling of the load, other controlled light sources should not point at the photocell. Do not mount the photocell so the window points up (skyward) because the fixture lamps may cause the light to cycle. To mount the 810D P Series light: 1. Remove the metal conduit plug in the side of the obstruction light. 2. Thread the photocell and socket assembly on the outside of the fixture so that the final position of the window faces outward from the front (cover side) of the obstruction light. 3. Use the nut to tightly lock the position as needed. Making Electrical Connections SHOCK HAZARD To avoid electrical shock hazards, do not connect wires when power is applied. Contact with high voltage will result in personnel injury or death. 1. Remove the cover plate from the junction box. 2. Refer to Figure 2 on page 6 for the electrical connections. 3. Secure the cover plate on the junction box.

9 Servicing the Lamps Servicing the Lamps 7 Federal Signal Corporation will service your equipment or provide technical assistance with any problems that cannot be handled locally. Any units returned to Federal Signal for service, inspection, or repair; must be accompanied by a Return Material Authorization (RMA). The RMA can be obtained from the local distributor or manufacturer s representative. Please provide a brief explanation of the service needed or the nature of the malfunction.
