5 DWDM DATA SHEET DB4134-E Issue F Page 1 of 6 Passive optical multiplexer/de-multiplexer. Increases the capacity of existing networks by transferring several wavelengths on the same fibre. Independent of protocol and bitrate. Delivered in several combinations from 8 to 40-channel DWDM. Description The DWDM is delivered as 1U panel or as modules for 1U/3U modular panel. They are based on reliable passive technology and are delivered with SC or LC interface with PC or APC polished connectors. Modules The modules are inserted in a 1U or 3U panel (se separate data sheet for details). The 3U panel may be populated with up to 12 modules, the 1U panel with up to 3 modules, and they may be placed in any order in the panel. This ensures a flexible and modular system with simple access to adding modules at a later stage and also offers high density with the panel fully equipped. Each module is complete with components for two-way communication, terminated in LC connectors at the front. The panel is intended for mounting in 19 racks. 1U panel This is a panel for mounting in 19 or metric racks. The panel may offer high density, but do not offer any good possibilities for later expansion within the same panel. Each panel is complete with components for two-way communication, terminated in SC or LC connectors at the front. 3U modular panel with modules The panel is ready to be installed in 19 racks. By turning the mounting bracket it may also be 1U panel with 8 channels installed in a metric rack. When the panel is to be placed in a 19" rack the bracket may be moved about 2 cm forward if needed. In this way the panel moves 2 cm further back in the rack. This gives more room in front of the panel, which may be beneficial for instance if the distance to the rack door is short. System description Passive DWDM panels/modules are a reliable and reasonable method for transferring several wavelengths/signals over the same fibre (wavelength multiplexing). In this way you may increase the capacity of existing fibre-cable significantly. Combined with OADM you may add or drop wavelengths on the way between the end points. A big advantage of using passive wavelength multiplexing is also that the method is protocol and bitrate independent. A complete system with components for two-way communication (multiplexer and de-multiplexer) in both ends are made with two panels/ modules.
6 DATA SHEET DB4134-E Issue F Page 2 of 6 The DWDM channels are defined by ITU and are based on frequency (THz) - not wavelength. The table below show the connection between channel number, frequency and wavelength for the most common channels in a system with 100GHz channel spacing. The table mat be expanded both up and down in frequency, in addition the DWDM units may also be delivered with 50 and 200 GHz spacing. By using 50GHz spacing, 2 40-channels DWDM s and an interleaver you may have 80 channels in a system. 12 DATA SHEET DB4135-E Issue D Page 2 of 4 The figure below shows a WDM system. To maintain signal quality, the 1310-signal is sent in the opposite direction through the fibre compared to what the Line Tx/Rx label indicates. This do not affect how the connections to the electronics or between the WDM s are done. All connections to/from the panel/module shall be Tx to Rx. This only needs to be considered when debugging the WDM-link, you will then see signals in both directions in both fibres. It may be used in both directions, but contains only one branch so it will work either as an add or as a drop. 2 patch cords put together will give add/drop in one direction, 4 patch cords makes up both directions. It is well suited when there is no room for a panel, but it will make it more difficult to track where the signal are running compared to using a panel. It may be delivered with SC or LC connectors. Add/Drop patch cord System description Passive multiplexers/de-multiplexers for CWDM or WDM are a reliable and reasonable method for transferring several wavelengths/signals over the same fibre (wavelength multiplexing). In this way you may increase the capacity of existing fibre-cable significantly. Combined with OADM you may add or drop wavelengths on the way between the end points. Combined with OADM you may add or drop separate wavelengths between end-points. A big advantage of using passive wavelength multiplexing is also that the method is protocol and bitrate independent.
16 DATA SHEET DB4136-E Issue E Page 2 of 5 OADM units may be delivered both for wideband 1310 and for CWDM-channels. When adding or dropping CWDM wavelengths (1 or more at the time), use OADM for CWDM. If a standard 1310 signal (not a 1311 CWDM signal) is to be added/dropped you need extra bandwidth and the OADM for for wideband 1310 must be used. Also OADM units for DWDM-wavelengths may be delivered on request. If you want to combine 1310 and CWDM you may make a connection as shown in the example below. Observe that the express channel (in->out) for wideband 1310 is limited to nm, while the OADM for CWDM covers the whole wavelength range of nm. The example shows three OADM branches (with example wavelengths), but you may have as many branches as you need as long as you do not exceed your link-loss budget (every OADM adds some loss) / panel/module 1 panel/module 1 panel/module / ± ± ± ± An add/drop patch cord contains only one branch so it will work either as an add or as a drop. 20 Splitter DATA SHEET DB4137-E Issue E Page 1 of 5 Passive splitters for distributing the signal to several fibres without changing the wavelength. May be delivered as 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16, 1:32 or 1:64 splitter. Independent of protocol and bitrate. Description The splitters are delivered as 1U panel or as modules for 1U/3U modular panel. 3U modular panel with CWDM modules The panel is ready to be installed in 19 racks. By turning the mounting bracket it may also be installed in a metric rack. When the panel is to be placed in a 19" rack the bracket may be 1U panel with 1:64 splitter moved about 2 cm forward if needed. In this way the panel moves 2 cm further back in the rack. This gives more room in front of the panel, which may be beneficial for instance if the distance to the rack door is short. Components The Splitters may also be delivered as separate components with or without connectors. Splitter production is based on 2 technologies: FBT and PLC. FBT splitters are based on traditional technology where the fibres are fused together side by side (Fused Biconical Taper). This is a reasonable technology for small splitters like 1:2, but they have a limited wavelength range (1310 ± 20, 1490 ± 20 and 1550 ± 20 nm). 1:2 splitters exists in several versions where the effect is distributed differently between the 2 outputs: 10-90%, 20-80%, 30-70%, 40-60% and 50-50% 1:2 splitter with SC/APC-connectors PLC splitters are based on "Planar Waveguide" technology where the light is led through waveguides in a substrate. These waveguides are made with branches according to how the light shall be split. This enables physically small splitters all the way up to 1:64 covering all of the usual wavelength range ( nm). 1:2 splitters of this type only exists as the type where the effect is equally distributed: 50-50%.
21 DATA SHEET DB4137-E Issue E Page 2 of 5 System description A passive splitter distributes the optical signal to several fibres without changing the wavelength. The signal may be sent both ways through the splitter (typically for PON) and may in that way also be used for combining signals in to a fibre. To be able to combine the signals must have different wavelength or send at different times (TDM - Time Division Multiplexing) ) so that they do not disturb each other. 1 : : Linje 64 Specifications Dimensions (HxWxD): panel: 44 x 484 (19 ) x 240 mm module: 130 x 35 x 210 mm Weight: panel: Ca. 2 kg depending on equipment module: 0,2-0,5 kg depending on equipment Operating temperature: -40 C to 85 C Insertion loss*: 1:2-10/90 <11,6/1,2 db 1:2-20/80 <8,3/1,75 db 1:2-30/70 <6,4/2,55 db 1:2-40/60 <5,1/3,25 db 1:2-50/50 <4,1/4,1 db 1:4 <8,5 db 1:8 <11,2 db 1:16 <14,5 db 1:32 <17,4 db 1:64 <21,5 db Wavelength: FBT-type (1:2) 1310 ± 20, 1490 ± 20 and 1550 ± 20 nm PLC-type: nm Directivity: > 50 db * Insertion loss included 1 connector
