INTRODUCTION If your HP B210a has a clogged printhead, this guide can be used to try and clear the clog. There are no guarantees the printer will work again, but can be used to recover the printer when nothing else fixed it. While the success rate is very good, it does not work to fix the problem 100% of the time. In some cases, this can damage a printhead that's already physically damaged. If your printhead has physical defects, it does not make sense to replace the printhead as it is often cheaper to buy a new printer. Guide Notes This guide is primarily made for the HP Photosmart Plus B210a, but is universal among all printers that use the 564 ink cartridge. IMPORTANT: Models with non removable printheads often require special attention to preserve the calibration and may not prepare the printhead with non Setup cartridges. If I have not tested the printer you are having problems against my calibration preservation procedure, I do not guarantee that you will be able to preserve it. It generally doesn't hurt to try on models with removable printheads, but I can't guarantee it will work unless I have tested it personally. Printhead Bypass model list Validated models (known to work) Photosmart C6380 Photosmart Premium C309g Photosmart Plus B209a Photosmart Plus B210a Permanent printhead Photosmart 6520 (MAY REQUIRE SETUP CARTRIDGES TO RECONFIGURE THE PRINTER) ifixit CC BY-NC-SA Page 2 of 11
PARTS: Distilled Water (1) Small bowl (1) Used to unclog the printhead. A disposable bowl is recommended as any ink stains may never come out. Shop Towels (1) NOTE: Can be substituted with paper towels. Used to dry the printhead and ink on the electrical contacts in the printer. Source of heat (1) Can be anything that produces heat, such as a coffee maker High Content Rubbing Alcohol (1) Only used to clear difficult clogs ifixit CC BY-NC-SA Page 3 of 11
Step 1 Gather your supplies You will need the following supplies: Paper towels (Keep your workspace clean along with cleaning and drying) Hot water (Distilled is recommended) Plastic bag (Ink cartridge storage) Optional: Gloves and 91% alcohol (Should only be used for stubborn clogs) Optional: Extra ink cartridges (Just in case any cartridges need to be replaced) ifixit CC BY-NC-SA Page 4 of 11
Step 2 Getting hot water Using water from a coffee machine is not recommended IF it can be avoided. It is better to warm up distilled water for this process. If a source like a coffee maker is used to get hot water, filter the water before use. On a Keurig coffee maker the easiest way to reduce deposits is to remove the coffee pod holder. It will not be perfectly clean, but it will not be anywhere near as dirty. To clean the printhead, you will need to use hot water. Before working on the printer, hot water should be collected. While cold water can be used, hot water is more likely to clear the dried ink. Step 3 Set a baseline Print a test image as a baseline. Good images can be found here: NTSC color bars or SMPTE color bars ifixit CC BY-NC-SA Page 5 of 11
Step 4 Remove the ink tanks If you have the original shipping caps for your cartridges, you can use these in place of a plastic bag. Remove the ink tanks from the printer. Put these in a plastic bag to prevent the ink from drying out. Stop here and follow the next step word for word when it is time to remove the printhead. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA Page 6 of 11
Step 5 Preserving your printhead calibration Unplug the printer before doing ANYTHING. If you do not do this you risk losing the calibration data. If you need clearer instructions, follow this guide for additional instructions. With the ink cartridges removed from the printer, it is time to remove the printhead. Important: Before removing the printhead, VERIFY the printer is unplugged before removing anything. With the printer being unplugged and verified twice, remove the printhead. Lift the locking latch on the printhead carrier up. Once this is unlocked, the printhead can be removed. Once the printhead is unlocked, remove the printhead. Remove the printhead by grabbing it as shown. Important: DO NOT touch the contacts or nozzles on the printhead. This can damage the printhead. Leave the scanner lid open to avoid confusion about if a printhead is installed. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA Page 7 of 11
Step 6 Clean the contacts in the printer If this is area is not cleaned, the printer may produce Ink system failure errors. Depending on when the error happens, this can result in calibration erasure. With the printhead removed, inspect the electrical contacts in the printer. If you see any ink, wipe this area down with a alcohol covered napkin or an alcohol wipe. It's better to do this while the printhead is out, since it's convenient. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA Page 8 of 11
Step 7 Clean the printhead Alcohol should only be used as a last resort since it can damage the printhead. If alcohol is used, purge the printhead with clean water THREE TIMES. As the ink clears up, the ink should get progressively lighter. This will take multiple cycles on heavily clogged printers. Tip: If your printer has a stubborn clog, an ultrasonic cleaner or small paintbrush can help with these clogs. Put the printhead in front of a fan to speed up the drying time. Recommended circulation times: With alcohol: 5-10 minutes. Without alcohol: 15 minutes. Pour hot water into a bowl and let the printhead sit. As the water gets dirty, change it out. Once the water is reasonably clear, the printhead is clean. Remove the printhead and dry the nozzles and electrical contacts by hand. This will help mitigate the Printhead problem error. While the printhead is likely ready to use, allow the printhead to dry before installation. Let the printhead dry outside the printer for ~2-3 hours. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA Page 9 of 11
Step 8 Reinstall the printhead and ink If the printer is plugged in without a printhead and ink installed, the calibration data will be erased! It is best to not not touch the printer until it is satisfactorily dry. If your printer says Printhead Problem, the calibration data will be erased. If this happens, check if the printhead is installed correctly. WARNING: Printhead initialization uses a lot of ink. On non XL cartridges, it can use ~1/2 of the ink in the installed cartridge. New ink should be purchased if this happens. Note: While the printer will not treat the printhead as "new", it will need to run a Printhead Preparation process. This cannot be avoided. Once the printhead is satisfactorily dry, reinstall it in the printer. This should be done in the reverse order it was removed. After the printhead is installed, install your ink cartridges. Once this is done, it is safe to plug the printer in. ifixit CC BY-NC-SA Page 10 of 11
Step 9 Test the printer Ink levels are very important for this test. If any ink cartridge(s) currently installed are low, these cartridges should be replaced. If you have a 5 color printer (K/PK/C/M/Y), use the Photo printing mode. This will allow you to test Photo Black. If you are still having problems, the printhead likely has other problems. To rule this out, try to clean the printhead once and see if the problem clears up. Tip: If this condition does not clear up after two tries, a new printhead is ~$80. It's often cheaper to buy a new printer then a new printhead. After replacing the printhead, test your printer again. Use the same settings as the before test and see if the results have improved. If your printer is working as well as it used to, then the problem was simply caused by a difficult clog that needed manual intervention to fix. However, if your printer is not working right after letting the parts dry for a little longer, then it is very likely that the printhead was already failing and this procedure damaged it to the extent it no longer works.
