3 What is an LDO? Where can you find it? What is an LDO? Linear Regulation is a cost effective mean to deliver a stable and regulated output voltage, with design simplicity and few external components. Linear regulators are the basic building block of almost every power supply. The LDO is a Linear voltage regulator which operates with a very low input-output voltage differential (dropout voltage), offering improved efficiency. In those applications where the Output current is less than or equal to a few amps and the Output voltage (V OUT ) is close to the input one (V IN ), the LDOs provide the best cost/performance tradeoff. 5 Basic parameters: The waterfall analogy 5 How to choose an LDO? In an LDO the needed voltage gap between the input and the output (Dropout) is minimized, to the good of the System Efficiency. The Output current is almost the same of the Input one, minus a small amount needed to bias the LDO internal circuits (Quiescent current) SOURCE Input Voltage Input current Quiescent current Output Voltage Output current LOAD DROPOUT VOLTAGE Merit parameters Apart from the minimum dropout voltage and the quiescent current that are directly related with efficiency and power consumption, there are a few other merit parameters that have to be evaluated when designing with a LDO: Static parameters: Line, Load and temperature regulation Dynamic parameters: PSRR, NOISE, transient response Package dimension and thermal dissipation PSRR (or SVR): indicates how well an LDO rejects the ripple coming from the input at various frequencies. It is specified in db (the higher,the better) NOISE: is the level of noise generated internally by the LDO circuitry (the lower,the better). It is generally specified as integral noise over a frequency band.
