8 Controlesta RCO VC60-Compact The devices of the Compact Series of the Controlesta RCO range vary considerably in the applications that can be selected. The HC range offers applications for heating controls and the VC range for ventilation controls. Version 1-1 Page 8

9 Commissioning Removing the packing Installation Ambient conditions The RCO module should be carefully removed from the packing. When doing this, please check that the packing is not damaged and that the device is in perfect condition. The RCO module is to be installed on top hat rails. The required dimensions should be as per the corresponding dimensional drawings. Ambient temperature 0 to 50 C Ambient humidity 0 to 90 % relative humidity, non-condensing Switchgear cabinet construction When constructing a switchgear cabinet, all of the relevant regulations are obviously to be observed. In addition, the following principal points for a correct electromagnetic compatible design of a switchgear cabinet should be observed: Switchgear cabinets that are kept separate as far as is possible should be used for power electronics and low-level signals. Partition walls must be fully bonded. An electromagnetic-compatible mounting plate may be neither varnished nor anodised. Main earth buses must have low-resistance connections to the mounting plate. Cables from different cable groups must be laid spatially separated. Cables should be kept as short as possible. Make sure that crossings between interfering and sensitive cables overlap each at the correct angle. All cable shields are to be earthed at the switchgear cabinet input and output points. This earthing arrangement should be made in as large a size as possible (lay cable clamps or earth screws / no pig tails ). If filters should be installed, care should be taken to ensure that correct connections are made. Fluorescent tubes must be located at sufficient distances away from sensitive devices. 10 Electro-magnetic compatibility All the devices of the RCO C system comply with the required limits for emitted interference and noise immunity. However, the devices may be operated in an environment, which requires additional protective measures in order to ensure an interference-free operation. In order to achieve adequate protection at an acceptable level of expenditure, the whole installation should be looked at from the electromagnetic compatibility viewpoint. It is important to stop the means of transmission of disturbing pulses. A correct and professionally- made ground insulation or earth is an essential pre-requisite for the diverting of electromagnetic interference. That is why for every switchgear cabinet into which RCO devices are built, it should be ensured that the switchgear dimension is identical to the equipotential bonding of the building. Cable-related interference pulses should be diverted by means of special filters in the power supply of the switchgear cabinet in accordance with the switchgear cabinet s dimension. In addition, the 24V AC power supply of the RCO devices can be conducted via a suitable fine protective system. The earthing of shielded cables is to be carried-out with care, as the shield may otherwise remain ineffective in many cases. Bus lines can, in addition, be protected by suitable filters against electromagnetic influences. If frequency converters are installed in a plant, then the manufacturer s instructions are to be followed and the recommended mains power supply input and output filters should be installed as per the instructions. Care should be taken in the wiring arrangements to ensure that cables of individual groups (I, II, III, IV) are laid with sufficient intervening distances. Installing in explosionprotected plants In order to avoid electrical equipment, such as for example sensors, creating sources of ignition in explosive or flammable atmospheres, current and voltage levels are limited to maximum permitted values in the corresponding electrical circuit. This is achieved through having so-called safety barriers. You should clarify with ELESTA which barriers are provided in the specific application in question. Version 1-1 Page 10

11 HC VC network The compact control units can be operated as stand-alone units or in a network with up to 4 devices. The terminating resistor (T switch) must be switched on at the respective end devices. One control unit is set through the operator display unit as the master and the others as slaves. CAN bus Transfer rate: Cable length The L bus works according to the CAN protocol. The data transfer (A, B) is made as per the RS 485 standard. The P terminal is not connected. The G terminal creates the common ground. The transfer rate for the L bus is set as standard at 100 Kbps. 100 Kbps: up to 500m Users The number of L bus users is limited to 4. Bus cable The transfer data is valid for the type of cable supplied by the company Lapp. This cable is ideally suited for the connecting-up of 4 RCO Compact devices to the L bus. Topology Terminal assignment Design Only one straight bus structure (line bus, line structure) is permitted. Neutral points may not be created. Spur lines should be avoided and may in any case be no longer than 25 cm. The connection of the individual cable segments is made using a wire end ferrule. The crimped connection avoids intermittent contacts of the bus cable. Cables may not be reversed on any position of the bus. The L bus power supply is metallically separated and may not therefore be connected to any point on the switchgear cabinet. The L bus may not be used for transmitting further signals. Version 1-1 Page 11

12 Shield guide Terminating Extension The cable shield of the L bus- bus cable must be connected to the equipotential bonding rail of the building. In order to avoid compensating currents, the shield may only be placed on one side. The shields of the individual cable segments can also be looped and connected to the equipotential bonding rail at one central point. The bus cable must be terminated at each end with 129 Ohm. This resistance is switched on via the DIP switch T (ON). The correct installation can be re-tested in that, with all of the L bus users in the de-energised condition, with the use of an ohmmeter the resistance level is measured at any point on the bus between the terminals A and B. The measured level must be approx. 60 ohms. In the event that the maximum size of the network of 500 m is insufficient, then a repeater can be installed. 13 Power supply 24V AC/DC power supply The CONTROLESTA RCO C system devices are operated with 24V AC/DC power. Due to this, a transformer with sufficient reserve must be installed. There is an outgoing section in the secondary circuit of the transformer on the remote earth. The input end is in an environment where electromagnetic interference is to be taken into account and a suitable interference suppressor filter is to be provided. L1 N PE RCO C N L L 24V AC N Illustration: Neutralisation of the 24V AC When performing this neutralisation, care should be taken to ensure that the conductor has an adequate cross-section (at least 4mm 2 ) and is kept as short as possible. Please take care with all connected 24V AC loads that there is a correct connection of the 24V AC leading conductor (on terminal L) and the earthed conductor (on terminal N). A polarity reversal of the supply voltage can cause damage to connected devices. Use should therefore be made of different coloured conductors. The CONTROLESTA RCO C devices are fused with neutral 2A (SMD) fuse. The following test is recommended as soon as the 24V AC voltage supply is switched on. - Make sure that the L bus on the installed devices is still not plugged in. - Test the power voltage with a voltmeter at the plug connection. The measured value should not deviate from 24V AC by more than +/- 10%. If devices are to be installed in different switchgear cabinets, then a separate 24V AC transformer should be provided in each cabinet. This measure helps to avoid earth loops that are sensitive to interference. Version 1-1 Page 13

14 Please make sure that the common return circuit for the whole reverse current is adequately dimensioned. If the transformer is supplying further actuators and other users in addition to the RCO devices, then these should be conducted via a separate return circuit to the base point of the transformer. 24V DC power supply Earthing design CONTROLESTA RCO Compact devices can also be operated with 24V DC. A task that had to be overcome in the development of the CONTROLESTA RCO C system was the galvanic separation of the differing voltage levels. For this reason, we also have galvanically separated device grounds. The following illustration explains the individual ground levels.
