4 INNOVATIVE DESIGN AND ENGINEERING WHAT ARE YOU PLUGGING INTO? If you ve just made an electronics purchase - whether it is an advanced and complete home theater system, a single electronic component, an appliance, a computer or anything with a power cord, the first thing you ll do is plug it in. But what are you plugging into? Most electronics get plugged directly into a wall outlet, leaving them completely defenseless against catastrophic power surges, as well as everyday power spikes that degrade lifespan and performance over time. Additionally, without protection on signal and data lines, the equipment is susceptible to damage from an outside lightning strike. While many of us use surge protectors or power strips when more AC outlets are needed, how much protection do these devices offer? Caused by lightning (most severe) or, far more commonly, spikes caused by the utility substation and major appliances switching on and off Effect on A/V Equipment: Lightning can destroy an entire system with one strike. The multiple daily AC spikes slowly break down sensitive circuits, causing lockups, decreased performance, and premature equipment failure. PROBLEM Brownouts and Over-voltages Definition and Cause: Brownouts are commonly caused by overuse on the grid or utilities temporarily cutting back on available power.
