9 Overview 1 Overview ValueLine computers come in a wide range of options that satisfy many application requirements. The VL IPC is a modular industrial computer based on a building block approach that provides systems according to specific application requirements. VL IPC is a general purpose industrial computer that may come preloaded with the Windows operating system. It is possible to order the VL IPC without a preloaded operating system. Standard hardware features for all VL IPC systems include: 24 V DC power supply Fanless operation Uninterruptable power supply (UPS) interface VGA output DVI-D video output 4 USB ports 2 Ethernet ports (10/100/1000 kbps) 1 COM port (RS-232, 9-pin D-SUB connector) 2 CompactFlash slots Diagnostic LED for over-temperature condition Configuration options include: Display size or no display CPU type RAM memory Size and type of mass storage Mounting options PCI expansion slots Optical storage device NVRAM (non-volatile RAM only available in some configurations) This manual describes the possible options and features of the VL IPC available at the time of printing. For specific part numbers and components, refer to the configuration sheet included with the unit to determine the installed options. In some mounting orientations, the labels with the model number, product serial number, and the Microsoft Windows operating system product key are hidden. 10 VL IPC 1.1 Getting Acquainted with the VL IPC Depending on configuration options selected, the VL IPC may look different. Also, the various mounting options provide tremendous flexibility. Figure 1-1 shows the connector side of the VL IPC including an optional optical storage device, which installs in the basic system, and the optional PCI slots. 13 Installation 2 Installation The flexibility of the VL IPC allows many different installation options. 2.1 Mounting and Clearances Table 2-1 Temperature Specifications Depending on the configuration ordered, there are several ways to mount the VL IPC. Use the appropriate section below to mount the VL IPC. NOTE: Install the VL IPC with adequate clearance around the heat sink to provide sufficient air flow such that ambient temperatures do not exceed the operating limits listed in Table 2-1. Install cooling fan(s) in the enclosure if necessary. When installing the VL IPC in a cabinet, follow these general rules: Verify clearances within the cabinet. Typically, leave at least 5 cm (2 in.) on each side with 12.7 cm (5 in.) on the connector side if the VL IPC has the optional optical storage drive. Drill all holes and make all cuts before beginning installation. Be sure to protect already installed components from shavings. Supporting panels must be at least 14 gauge to provide proper support. Test conditions: Windows XP running with approximately 35% continuous average CPU loading, which is typical for many applications. 100% continuous CPU loading is a worst case test condition. 14 VL IPC Wall-mount and Bookshelf Installation Wall mounts are valid for VL IPCs that do not include a display. Use this type of mounting to install the VL IPC on the inside of a cabinet. The VL IPC can be attached to a flat surface in either a wall mount or bookshelf orientation. Either way, attach the unit using the four key holes. The mounting surface must be flat and not subject to vibration Figure 2-1 Wall and bookshelf mounts To install a wall mounted VL IPC, follow these steps: 1. Use the VL IPC as a template and mark the locations of the key holes on the mounting surface. 2. Use the correct anchor type for the mounting surface and securely attach the VL IPC to the wall. Ensure the attaching hardware is in the small section of the key holes. 3. Tighten mounting screws. 15 Installation Panel Mount Panel mounts are the only valid mounting system for VL IPCs with a display. This mounting system permits installation of the VL IPC in a cabinet with so the display panel is visible on the outside (see Figure 2-2). NOTE: Connectors and switches must be accessible from the rear. 16 VL IPC 1. Cut a hole in the enclosure according to the dimensions for either a 15- or 17-in. display Figure Panel cut-out dimension for 15 in. and 17 in. displays 15 in. 17 in. 2. From the front, push the VL IPC through the opening. Ensure the gasket is properly positioned in the groove. 2-4 PHOENIX CONTACT 2637_en_A
17 Installation 3. From the rear, place the display clamps, 1, in the slots, 2, on the display and slide the clamp to the right (see Figure 2-4). Clamps must be used in every slot. Figure 2-4 Panel mount clamps 4. Tighten the screws on all clamps, alternating from one side to the other until the front bezel is secure against the panel. Torque the bolts to 1.4 Nm. 2637_en_A PHOENIX CONTACT 2-5
18 VL IPC 2.2 Power Connect 24 V DC power (see Figure 2-5) to the included removable power connector (Order No ). This connector supports wire sizes from 0.2 to 2.5 mm² (24 to 12 AWG). Tighten the wire retaining screws using 0.5 Nm torque. Figure 2-5 X2 ETH POWER: 24 VDC + A B VL IPC power connection The power connector A-B pins are for use with the Windows operating system generic uninterruptable power supply (UPS) driver. The signals match those required by the driver. Connect the A-B pins to the power supply Bat.-Mode contacts on a Phoenix Contact UPS or similar power supply. When the UPS is on battery power, the operating system performs the configured operations (see Configuring UPS Actions on page 3-6). Ground Screw The ground screw provides an earth ground for the VL IPC. Ground Screw UPS (B) UPS (A) 0 V (-) 24 V DC (+) NOTE: Circuit ground (0 V) and earth ground are tied together. 19 Installation 2.3 Interfaces After mounting the VL IPC, make any necessary cable connections. Depending on the mounting method, connections are made at the rear or bottom of the VL IPC (see Figure 2-6). If the ValueLine computer includes PCI slots, additional connections may be required to the PCI cards inserted in the PCI slots. 20 VL IPC Communication Interfaces Various ports and connections allow the VL IPC to communicate with other devices. The connections available on the IPC module are Ethernet: Two RJ45 connectors are located on the rear of the VL IPC. These allow the computer to communicate on a 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet network. Serial: Serial devices connect to the DB-9 RS-232 port. USB: USB devices connect using Type A connectors. The VL IPC has four USB ports. VGA: This port connects the VL IPC to an external monitor with a corresponding VGA connector. DVI-D: This port connects the VL IPC to an external monitor with a corresponding DVI-D connector External Display To use an external display, connect either a VGA cable or DVI-D cable to the appropriate connector (see Figure 2-6). The display runs in parallel with an attached VL IPC display, if configured, and there are no special key sequences or configuration settings to enable the display Installing PCI Cards Optionally, the VL IPC contains two PCI slots. Use either or both slots to add I/O cards to the VL IPC. To access these slots, follow these steps: 1. Remove power from the unit. 2. Place the unit on a flat surface with the ribbed surface (cover) up. NOTE: If the VL IPC has an integrated display, place the unit on a soft cloth or surface. 3. Remove the four screws from the cover, 1, and remove the cover. NOTE: Use standard ESD precautions when removing or installing PCI cards to avoid damage to the cards and the VL IPC. 2-8 PHOENIX CONTACT 2637_en_A
21 Installation Figure 2-7 PCI Slot 1 Cover and side panel access screws 4. Do one or both of the following: For PCI slot 0: a) Remove the two screws holding the slot frame, 2. One screw is on the top, 3, and the other is on the connector side of the unit to the right of the PCI card opening, 4. Remove the slot frame and slot cover as an assembly. b) Loosen the retaining screw and remove the slot cover from the slot frame. c) Attach the PCI card to the slot frame and secure it with the retaining screw. Ensure the card is under the washer. d) Carefully position the PCI card and frame assembly so the card connector is in proper position over the connector. Carefully yet firmly push the card into the connector, ensuring the tab at the bottom of the card enters the chassis slot. Ensure that the card is properly seated in the connector. e) Secure the slot frame to the chassis using the two screws previously removed in step a. PCI Slot 0 When installing two cards of the same type, drivers often assign higher priority to the card in the lower slot number. NOTE: Tighten all screws on the VL IPC frame to no more than 7 Nm torque. 2637_en_A PHOENIX CONTACT 2-9
22 VL IPC For PCI slot 1: a) Remove the four screws, 5, for the left side panel, 6, and remove the panel. b) Loosen the retaining screw and remove the slot cover from the slot frame. c) Install the PCI card, carefully pushing the card into the connector with the tab being properly positioned in the chassis. After it is fully inserted in the connector, slide the card under the retaining screw and washer previously loosened to remove the cover. d) Tighten the retaining screw. e) Re-install the left side panel, 6, using the screws previously removed in step a. 5. 23 Startup and Operation 3 Startup and Operation 3.1 Power Switch With all components and I/O properly connected, press the power switch in the direction of dot and release it. It is a momentary switch and returns to its original position. To turn power off, press the switch in the same direction and release it. Upon completion of boot-up, the VL IPC runs the Touchkit screen calibration (see Touch Screen Calibration on page 3-2). POWER: 24 VDC + A B Power Switch 2637_en_A PHOENIX CONTACT 3-1
24 VL IPC 3.2 Software License and Activation Use of the Microsoft operating system is subject to the licensing limitations specified by the Microsoft Software License. Phoenix Contact is not responsible and cannot be held liable for proper use of the operating system or any other software installed on the computer unless that software is a product developed and manufactured by Phoenix Contact. TouchKit Icon To reduce software piracy and provide customers with quality service, Microsoft includes a product activation requirement on some software, including some operating systems. Use of the software is limited to the first 30 days after first launching the software unless the product activation process is completed. A pop-up program prompts the user to begin the process when the software is first started. If activation is not completed, the software repeats the product activation pop-up on a pre-determined cycle. Once started, message boxes lead the user through the process to obtain proper product activation. Additional details are included in the Microsoft Software License and are also available at The Windows XP product key is on a sticker that is affixed to the VL IPC. 3.3 Touch Screen Calibration If the VL IPC includes a display, it also includes the TouchKit touch screen calibration utility. The first time the VL IPC boots, this utility runs automatically. To run the touch screen calibration utility, do one of the following: Double-tap the TouchKit icon on the desktop. 25 Startup and Operation a) Select the Start... All Programs... TouchKit... Configure Utility menu to display the Touchkit USB Controller application window. b) Tap the Tools tab to display the tab shown in Figure 3-2. Figure 3-2 The Touchkit: USB Controller... Tools tab c) Tap the 4 Points Calibration button. During calibration, the entire screen is gray with a flashing target that initially appears in the lower-left corner. d) As the message indicates, touch and hold the target until it stops flashing. e) Release the target. f) When the target moves to another corner, press and hold it until it stops flashing, and then release it. g) Continue with the other two corners. h) Upon completion, click the OK button, and then click the OK button to close the Touchkit: USB Controller window. 3.4 On-Screen Tools With the optional touch screen display, there are special on-screen tools in addition to the touch screen calibration (see Touch Screen Calibration on page 3-2). By default, the onscreen tools include a button palette with two buttons, Right-Click and On-Screen Keyboard. 2637_en_A PHOENIX CONTACT 3-3
26 VL IPC On-Screen Tools Palette The on-screen tools palette is a small window with two buttons (see Figure 3-3). Remove On-Screen Tools Palette When displaying a full-screen HMI display, it may not be appropriate to display the onscreen tools palette. To remove the palette, follow these steps: 1. Tap the Right-Click button. 2. Tap the top (double-line) of the tools palette to display the palette pop-up menu. 3. Tap the Exit menu. 4. Tap Yes to confirm. Display On-Screen Tools Palette To re-display the on-screen tools palette when it has been hidden, follow these steps if the VL IPC Tools icon is in the system tray: 1. Tap the VL IPC Tools icon in the system tray. 2. Tap the Tools Palette menu. If the VL IPC Tools icon isn t in the system tray, from the Start menu, tap the Start... VL IPC Tools menu Right-Click The on-screen tools palette includes a button that simulates the right-click action of a mouse. Tap the Right-Click button. The next tap is the same as clicking a right mouse button. 3-4 PHOENIX CONTACT 2637_en_A
27 Startup and Operation Pop-up Keyboard The on-screen tools include a pop-up keyboard. If the on-screen tools palette isn t visible, follow the steps in Display On-Screen Tools Palette. To display the keyboard, tap the On Screen Keyboard button. The On-Screen Keyboard dialog box may appear (see Figure 3-4). Tap the OK button to close the dialog box. To prevent the dialog box from appearing again, tap the Don t show this message again check box before taping the OK button. Then, tap the keys on the on-screen display to type in the currently selected field. Figure 3-5 The On-Screen Keyboard window Backlight Control To display the Backlight Control window, follow these steps: 1. Tap the VL IPC Tools icon in the system tray. If the VL IPC Tools icon isn t in the system tray, from the Start menu, tap the Start... VL IPC Tools menu. 2637_en_A PHOENIX CONTACT 3-5
28 VL IPC 2. Tap the Backlight Control menu to display the Backlight Control window. Figure 3-6 The Backlight Control window Move the slider in the Brightness Control window to adjust the brightness of the VL IPC display. 3.5 Configuring UPS Actions With an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) that supports operating system notification (like the Phoenix Contact UPS) connected to the A and B power connectors (see Figure 2-5 on page 2-6), configure the UPS driver by following these steps: 1. Select the Start... Control Panel menu. 2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Power Options icon. 3. In the Power Options window, click the UPS tab. 4. Click the Select... button to display the UPS Selection dialog box. 3-6 PHOENIX CONTACT 2637_en_A
29 Startup and Operation 5. Select Generic from the Select manufacturer drop-down list, and then click Custom in the Select model list. Figure 3-7 The UPS Selection dialog box 6. Select COM1 from the On port drop-down list. 7. Click the Next button to display the UPS Interface Configuration on COM1 dialog box with default selections as shown in Figure 3-8. Figure 3-8 The UPS Interface Configuration on COM1 dialog box 8. Clear the Low Battery and UPS Shutdown check boxes. This grays out the corresponding Negative and Positive radio button. 9. 31 Startup and Operation 3.6 Accessing the Optical Drive Use the optional CD-RW/DVD-RW to install programs or backup control programs and data. To insert or remove a CD/DVD, follow these steps: 1. Insert the CD/DVD in the proper orientation for the drive. The recorded/recordable side should face down or left. 4. Gently push the CD/DVD disk in the slot. 2637_en_A PHOENIX CONTACT 3-9
32 VL IPC 3.7 Using CompactFlash The VL IPC has two type II CompactFlash slots, one master and one slave. The master slot is for a bootable CompactFlash card and the slave slot is for a data-only CompactFlash card. To install a CompactFlash card follow these steps: 1. Open the access door at the rear of the VL IPC (see Figure 3-11). Install a CompactFlash card in the proper slot. Orient the card so the label-side is facing away from the optical drive. Push the card straight into the device until seated. When inserting a CompactFlash card, use the master slot for bootable CompactFlash cards and the slave slot for data-only CompactFlash cards. To remove a card from the master slot, use a small needle nose pliers and carefully pull the card straight out. To remove a card from the slave slot, use the ejector mechanism. 33 Maintenance 4 Maintenance The VL IPC has several removable components. To access some of these components, it may be necessary to remove cables connected to the VL IPC. 2637_en_A PHOENIX CONTACT 4-1
34 VL IPC 4.1 VL IPC Components There is an access door under the connectors of the VL IPC system module (see Figure 4-1). Under the access door are two type II CompactFlash slots (master and slave), a bay for an optional optical storage device, a removable hard disk bay, and the RTC battery. 35 Maintenance Real-Time Clock Battery There is a battery located under the access door. This battery supplies power to the Real- Time Clock (RTC) in the VL IPC when the system is not connected to a 24 V DC power source. The battery has a typical life of 2 years and requires replacement occasionally. To replace the battery 1. Open the access door at the rear of the IPC module. 2. The RTC battery is above the hard disk slot. Use a needle nose pliers to carefully pull out the battery. 3. Be sure to replace the battery with the same type (CR2032 3V Lithium), oriented as shown in Figure 4-2. VL IPC systems without a hard drive come with a blank tray. To install a new hard drive or replace the current hard drive, follow these instructions: 1. Remove power from the unit. If necessary, move or disconnect any cables that interfere with accessing the hard drive. 2. Open the access door. 3. Turn the screw counterclockwise several turns. It is spring-loaded and, when it clears the threads, it pops out. 4. Grasp the screw and swing the front lever out from the door. 2637_en_A PHOENIX CONTACT 4-3
36 VL IPC 5. Pull the lever to slide the tray and hard drive assembly out of the bay. Hold the access door flat to ensure the tray clears as it is removed. 6. If present, the hard drive can be removed from the tray by removing the four screws along the sides of the hard drive. 7. If necessary, install the hard drive in a tray using the appropriate mounting hardware for the drive. The VL IPC can be operated without a hard drive (booted from the CompactFlash Master). For extended operating periods, it is recommended that an empty tray be installed in the drive bay and locked closed. 8. With the hard drive installed in the tray (or with a blank tray), orient the tray so the front lever is fully extended and toward the power connector. Slide the assembly straight into the slot until it clicks into place. 9. Gently push the drive in so the connector is properly seated. 10. Swing the front lever flat across the front of the drive assembly. 11. Using a screwdriver, push the screw in and turn clockwise to secure the front lever. 12. Close the access door and return any removed cables to their proper connector. 13. Restore power. 4.2 BIOS Configuration Although Phoenix Contact doesn t recommend changing BIOS configuration settings without specific instruction from Phoenix Contact Technical Services, this is something that may be necessary. To access the BIOS configuration, there must be an attached (physical) keyboard through one of the USB ports. During boot-up, the BIOS briefly displays the comment Press DEL to enter Setup.
