3 Introduction The PFC-10 is used to continuously improve the Power Factor of the operating facility through controlling 6 or 12 capacitor steps. It monitors mains voltage, current, Power and Active/Reactive Power. To accurately calculate Power Factor, the PFC-10 uses Voltage, Current and Reactive Power. When the inductive current is higher than the pre-adjusted setting, the controller will initiate an "Add Capacitor" demand to connect the appropriate capacitor steps. Similarly, when the inductive current is below a calculated level, a "Reduce Capacitor" demand for disconnection will be initiated. The PFC-10 also provides nine alarm indications such as, powerfactor deviation from the target setting and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) exceeding a preset value. Calculating correction KVAR Total capacitor value in KVAR (Qc) necessary to correct power factor from Orig. PF to a value of 0.95 Mounting Insert the PFC-10 through the cut-out (138 x 138mm), install the right and left clips as follows: 1. Slide opening onto the stand-off Use stand-off 1 as pivot and slide-turn the clip until it snaps into stand-off Turn the screw until the PFC-10 holds firmly. Notes: Do not mount the PFC-10 near heat sources Protect the PFC-10 from dust and corrosive atmospheres. 2 1 Original. PF K1 K Where calculation of Qc is made with K 1 or K 2 as coefficients. K 1 = Factor by which the maximum original load (S) in KVA is to be multiplied to find correct sum of capacitors in KVAR, hence, Qc=K 1 x S K 2 = Factor by which the original maximum R.M.S. Current (I) in ampere is multiplied, to obtain the capacitor value in KVAR, hence, Qc=K 2 x I 2

10 Operation Parameters The controller has two limit lines. The upper one is for adding capacitor steps, and the lower one is for reducing capacitor steps. If the actual reactive current is above the upper limit an "Add" capacitor demand will be initiated. If the actual "Reactive" current is below the lower line, then a reduce capacitor command will be initiated. If however, the actual reactive current is between the two limit lines, no "Add" or "Reduce" commands will be initiated. The characteristics of the PFC-10 are controlled by the following parameters: C/K Value The C/K value determines the distance between the two limit lines, which is two times the C/K value. This value is greater than 1 (1 = reactive current of one capacitor step), to prevent "hunting" (in-out frequent switching) of the capacitor steps. If however, the centerline value is (-1), then the minimum power factor value will be the target power factor. (i.e. if the actual power factor will be lower than the target power factor, an "Add" capacitor command will be initiated). C/K value depends on: Capacitor step size (Qc, in var), System voltage (U=line to line voltage, in volts) C/T ratio (K), C/K is automatically calculated by the PFC-10 controller Note: If selected switching program allows for different capacitor step ratings, use the lowest capacitor step size for Qc value. However, if the switching program is and for some reason the capacitor steps are not identical, then use the highest capacitor step size for Qc value. Target Power Factor The target power factor determines the slope of the limit lines. This is the power factor value, which the controller aims to reach. If the center line value is (+) the maximum power factor value will be the target. (i.e. if the actual power factor will be higher than the target power factor, then a "Reduce" capacitor command will be initiated) Adjustment range: 0.80 inductive to 0.95 capacitive Default parameter: 0.92 Center Line Origin (CLO) The centerline is the middle line between the upper and lower limit lines. By default it is located one C/K value from both lines. The origin of the centerline can be moved upward and downward in steps of 0.5 C/K. If the CenterLine Origin value is (0), the average (over a prolonged period of time) power factor value will be the target power factor. Adjustment range: -1 to 2, in steps of 0.5 Default parameter: -1 Note: It is recommended to leave Center Line Origin (CLO) setting at the default value of (-1) to ensure that actual power factor will never decrease below target power factor. 9

11 Operation Parameters Threshold This parameter determines the controller operation mode at low loads. It is designed to prevent a low capacitive power factor at low loads. If, for example, the value of the CenterLine Origin is set to (-1), and the load decreases to a low level, the power factor could be a very low capacitive value. The Threshold is designed as an additional term for the logic operation of the controller. Graphically it could be observed as three horizontal threshold lines (lower, center and upper). An Add Capacitor Command can be accepted only if the operation point is both above the threshold upper line and above the upper limit line. A Reduce Capacitor Command can be accepted if the operating point is below either the threshold lower line or the lower limit line. Note: If the Target Power Factor value is set to 1 or to capacitive value, the Threshold is automatically set to off. Note: It is recommended to leave Threshold setting at the default value of (+1) to prevent over correction (very low capacitive power factor) at low loads. Adjustment range: -1 to +1, in steps of 0.5 Default parameter: +1 10
