6 Welcome to the Optical Power Meter Welcome to the Optical Power Meter, a handheld instrument which enables you to measure the power output over fibre optic cables in the field. The Optical Power Meter is designed to be as a companion to the Trend Optical Light Source or any suitable optical light source. Supplied with the Optical Power Meter This User Guide Protective Cover 3 x 1.5V batteries Set of adaptors for SC/FC/ST connectors Carrying case Optional Accessories An optional FC/LC adaptor is available from Trend Communications. See Use of Optical Laser Source with LC cables on page EN-11. Safety Advice Caution When using the Optical Power Meter, always take basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and injury to persons. These include the following: Avoid using the tester during an electrical storm there is a remote risk of electric shock by lightning. Use only the batteries supplied with the tester. See Fitting and Using Batteries on page EN-9. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire they may explode. Disconnect all interface cables before removing the battery cover. Never remove the rubber cover of the case while the Optical Power Meter is switched on or connected to the network. English Issue 1-03/09 EN-1

7 Optical Power Meter Looking after your Optical Power Meter Although light and portable, the Optical Power Meter is very robust and has been designed to operate in a typical outdoors working environment. To ensure reliable operation, avoid: very high or low temperatures the Optical Power Meter is designed to operate between -10 C and +60 C. You can store the unit safely between -25 C and +70 C. We recommend that you remove the batteries if you are going to store the Optical Power Meter for a period of time. very wet conditions the Optical Power Meter is weather-resistant but not waterproof. You can use it in light rain when held vertically, but you should never immerse the unit in water. Do not attempt to open the Optical Power Meter or you will invalidate your warranty. To avoid damage, we recommend that you keep the Optical Power Meter in its carrying case when you are not using it. Caution: Cleaning the Optical Power Meter Do not use solvents, strong detergents or abrasive materials to clean the Optical Power Meter. Use only cleaning agents approved for use on ABS and polycarbonate plastics. Looking after the Optical Connectors If the power reading decreases the connectors may need cleaning with the cotton swabs supplied using alcohol. If the problem persists contact your Trend Representative. When not in use make sure that you place the protective caps over the connectors. EN

9 Optical Power Meter Buttons The buttons are multifunctional. When used in combination with other buttons they perform different actions. On/Off Button Press and release immediately to switch the Optical Power Meter on. Press and hold for 2 seconds to switch the Optical Power Meter off. To disable or enable the Auto Power Off option see Auto Power Off Indicator on page EN-6. Zero Button Press to store the calibration settings. See Changing and Storing the New Calibration Settings on page EN-10. Wavelength Button Press to cycle through the wavelengths. db Button Press to display the power received in either Absolute Mode (dbm) or Relative Mode (db). Backlight Button Press to switch the backlight on and off. See Backlight Auto On Indicator on page EN-5 for more information. Input Port (SC/FC/ST Connector) The wavelength must be set to the same wavelength that is being received. The following wavelengths are available: 850nm 980nm 1300nm 1490nm 1550nm EN

10 Understanding the Display Understanding the Display Auto Power Off Indicator Selected Wavelength Battery Low Indicator Backlight Auto On Indicator Mode Indicator Alternative Power Reading Current Power Reading Typical Screen English Backlight Auto On Indicator This is displayed when you have selected for the backlight to automatically switch on when you switch on the Optical Power Meter. This is not displayed to indicate that you have not selected for the backlight to automatically switch on when you switch on the Optical Power Meter. Disabling and Enabling Backlight Auto On -1- Switch the Optical Power Meter on. -2- Press and release to disable or enable the Backlight Auto On option. The Backlight Auto On Indicator is displayed when you have enabled Backlight Auto On. Issue 1-03/09 EN-5

11 Optical Power Meter Auto Power Off Indicator When you switch the Optical Power Meter on Auto Power Off is enabled. If you do not use any buttons for approximately 5 minutes the Optical Power Meter will switch off automatically. Disabling and Enabling Auto Power Off -1- Switch the Optical Power Meter on. -2- Press and simultaneously and then release them simultaneously to disable or enable the Auto Power Off option. The Auto Power Off Indicator is displayed when you have enabled Auto Power Off. Battery Low Indicator This is displayed when the batteries do not have enough power to operate the Optical Power Meter. Mode Indicator This displays the current operating mode. See Calibrating the Optical Power Meter on page EN-10. Current Power Reading When you first perform a power reading it is displayed in dbm. To change the reading to display the relative power in db, press. See also Optical Fibre Loss Measurement on page EN-7. The Current Power Reading display is also used when calibrating the Optical Power Meter. See Calibrating the Optical Power Meter on page EN-10. EN

12 Understanding the Display Performing a Measurement The Optical Power Meter can perform two types of measurement, Absolute Power and Relative power. Absolute Power Measurement -1- Switch the Optical Power Meter on. -2- Connect to a light source. Absolute Power Reading -3- Press to match the incoming wavelength. -4- The Absolute Power Reading is displayed in dbm and mw. English Absolute Mode Optical Fibre Loss Measurement This is sometimes referred to as Relative Power Measurement. -1- Switch the Optical Power Meter on. -2- Connect to a light source, using the patch cords that you are going to use for the cable measurement. -3- Press and select the wavelength to match the wavelength of the source. 14 Fitting and Using Batteries -6- The power relative to the Reference value is displayed. The Current Reading at the bottom now displays the power Relative to the Reference Value. -7- Connect the Optical Power Meter and the light source to opposite ends of the cable to be tested. -8- The cable loss is displayed in db. Cable Loss English Cable Loss Fitting and Using Batteries -1- Press the clip fastener on the battery compartment cover down. -2- Remove the battery compartment cover. -3- Remove all three batteries making a note of their positive (+) and (-) negative connector orientation. The (-) negative battery connector should be against the spring. -4- Insert 3 new 1.5 V AA batteries. Warning Make sure that you insert the batteries with their positive (+) and negative (-) connectors correctly aligned. -5- Refit the battery compartment cover. The clip fastener should click shut. -6- Switch the Optical Power Meter on. Issue 1-03/09 EN-9

15 Optical Power Meter Calibrating the Optical Power Meter The Input Port on the Optical Power Meter is factory calibrated but you can change the calibration settings, if required, for each wavelength. Warning If you change and store new calibration settings you CANNOT return to the factory settings. -1- Switch the Optical Power Meter on. The Mode Indicator displays 0 to indicate that the Optical Power Meter is in Testing Mode. -2- Connect the Optical Power Meter to a calibrated Light Source. -3- Measure the input power. If the reading is incorrect, adjust the calibration. See Changing into Calibration Mode on page EN-10. Changing into Calibration Mode -1- Press and simultaneously to change into Calibration Mode. The Mode Indicator displays 1 to indicate that the Optical Power Meter is now in Calibration Mode. -2- Press to select the wavelength you want to calibrate. Changing and Storing the New Calibration Settings The following options can be repeated for each wavelength as required. -1- To increase or decrease the power reading in 0.05dBm increments: - Press to increase the power reading. Repeat as necessary. - Press to decrease the power reading. Repeat as necessary. EN

16 Calibrating the Optical Power Meter -2- When you have finished calibrating press to store the new settings. OR Press and simultaneously to return to the factory calibration settings. -3- Press and to exit Calibration Mode. The Mode Indicator displays 0 to indicate that the Optical Power Meter is now in Testing Mode. -4- The Optical Power Meter is now ready for performing measurements. Use of Optical Laser Source with LC cables English Rx FC Connector You will need: FC/LC Hybrid Adaptor (135051). You can slide the ferrule of an LT connector into the adaptor. Issue 1-03/09 EN-11
