Touchable parts are connected to the earth conductor and are thus protected against indirect contact (fault protection). Examples: irons, cookers, toasters, concrete mixers, extension cords. Class II Class III Remarks Definition: The active parts of the appliance are protected by strengthened or double insulation from direct contact. This ensures protection against direct contact. Protection from indirect contact is also assured because it is practically impossible for an insulation fault to occur. Examples: many small household appliances (hair dryers, food mixers), many hand-operated electrical tools (drills, hand-held circular saws). Definition: Protection against dangerous shock currents to the body is achieved by using low voltages and secure isolation from other circuits. Examples: Toys; tools for use in boiler construction Many appliances cannot be classified unambiguously under one of these protection classes as defined in the standards. They may, for example, be built with protection insulation but have, by necessity of their function (e.g. electromagnetic interference screening) an earth conductor that, for testing purposes, is not fully accessible. In such cases, such as with PC monitors, the appliance may be tested as for Class II. 26 OVERVIEW OF
