16 Encryption A powerful tool for protecting information Data is encrypted by applying an encryption method and a key A common encryption technique is the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) Keys are random bit-streams of predetermined lengths 128, 192 and 256 bits Encrypted data is unreadable without access to the key If encrypted data is exposed, it is generally not considered a security breach Encryption Key Management is managed in the application, at the system level or through the tape library 16
