2 Description Solid-performing server subsystems This uniprocessor, entry rack server delivers a solid range of performance by combining Pentium 4 single-core and Pentium D dual-core processors with high-speed ECC memory, 1 and 2 MB L2 cache, and EM64T. The xseries 306m server uses the Intel chipset to optimize throughput from processors to memory and to the 64-bit PCI-X bus. System BIOS (BIOS modified to IBM specifications) is loaded from a flash EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the server and to maintain compatibility with many current software programs. The Sales Manual is updated periodically as new features and options are announced that support these servers. Limitations If you use a legacy PCI adapter (32 bit/33 MHz) or a slower-speed PCI-X adapter in a hot-swap SAS/SATA system, the HDD performance will be degraded. Mixing different-speed HDDs (10,000 rpm with 15,000 rpm) will impact storage performance. To ensure proper air flow for cooling, the xseries 306m server requires a rack with a perforated door. Processor upgrades are not supported. Use the version of ServerGuide shipped with the system, or a later version, to load software and drivers. Earlier versions of ServerGuide may not be compatible with the server. Refer to the Software requirements section for operating system limitations. Planning information Customer responsibilities: Designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with system. Bay configuration: The xseries 306m server contains three drive bays. One bay contains the standard CD-ROM drive. Two 3.5-inch, slim-high bays located side-by-side on the lower front section of the server support installation of various SATA or SAS HDDs

8 Cabling The xseries 306m server contains an integrated IDE controller cabled directly to the 24x-10x IDE CD-ROM. xseries 306m SATA and SAS models contain a two-drop cable to support two HDDs xseries 306m models with SAS contain a mini-sas cable and a power interposal cable to support two hot-swap HDDs Rack installations: xseries 306m 1 U, rack-drawer models can be installed in a 48-cm (19-in) rack cabinet designed for 66-cm (26-in) deep devices, such as the IBM 42U Standard Rack or IBM 25U Standard Rack. If you use a non-ibm rack, the cabinet must meet the EIA -310-D standards with a depth of at least 71 cm (28 in).
