4 Introduction Lasermet SlimJim Mains-Powered LED Signs are intended to be wall mounted on a standard electrical box. The use of standard electrical boxes reduces the cost of installation in new works as the box for the sign can be installed by the electrician during first fix when the wiring is run. The sign can then be fitted during the second fix stage when the electrical outlets and switches are installed. The sign has a low profile so that it gives a smart almost-flush appearance without having to make a large hole in the wall. The sign is for indoor use only and should not be used in damp areas or places of high humidity. The sign is designed to give a long service life and has no user-replaceable parts inside. Power consumption is a minimal 5 watts. The sign is available in 110V and 230V versions, in three basic illumination colours and both standard and custom graphics. The message is not clearly seen when the sign is unlit. When illuminated, the sign produces an even brightness over the graphics area giving a clear message. The sign may be used on it s own or in conjunction with Lasermet s access/interlock systems. Lasermet provides a full range of laser/laboratory interlock equipment including control systems, interlock switches, laser shutters, door locks, access signs, external power supplies etc. which can be connected to provide a complete interlock system. 5 Installation The SlimJim LED Sign is designed to be permanently attached to a wall or other fixed vertical surface. The sign should be mounted in a convenient position for use and wiring, typically near or over the top of a doorway. The sign is intended to be attached to a standard electrical backbox. 6 The sign may also be attached to surface-mounted pattress and conduit boxes such as: The minimum depth required inside the box is 30mm to allow for the fused connector block supplied with the sign. If a sufficiently deep box cannot be provided the connector block may be replaced with a smaller one only if the supply is protected by a fuse or circuit breaker not exceeding 1A. NOTE: For UK and European boxes the fixing holes are horizontal. The sign suits the Ø68mm size European backboxes. For US backboxes the fixing holes are vertical and one, two or three-gang boxes may be used. The fixing holes for round conduit boxes are 45 in either direction. Perform a trial assembly of the sign to the backbox to make sure everything will line up as required. For flat mounting to a wall the backbox should be cut into the wall so that it is flush with the wall surface. Care should be taken to ensure that the fixing holes are exactly horizontal/vertical as required. On smaller backboxes the sign may not be secure and additional support may be required Page 6 of 11 Issue 3 2 January 2013

7 Safety READ AND OBSERVE THESE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. KEEP THEM FOR FUTURE REFERENCE The SlimJim sign is mains powered and hazardous voltages are present inside when the sign is powered. The sign must be installed and serviced by authorised service personnel only. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. If in doubt consult a qualified electrician. The sign must be installed and wired according to local and national electrical regulations. The sign is a class 1 product which must be earthed and all earth wires must be securely connected. Always make sure that the supply is isolated before installing the sign. When the sign is installed, always isolate the supply before removing the front cover. Never operate the sign with the front cover insecure or removed. Check that the supply voltage matches the sign rating as shown on the label inside the product before connecting. For indoor use only. Do not expose the sign to water or moisture. Do not install in damp environments. Do not clean with a damp cloth. Use a soft dry cloth only. Install out of the reach of children and in a safe position. Ensure that the fixings are secure. Isolate the supply immediately in the event of damage or if the sign stops working. If the sign is faulty or damaged it should be replaced. Do not attempt to repair the sign Page 7 of 11 Issue 3 2 January 2013

9 Wiring Ensure that the mains supply is isolated before attempting to fit or remove the sign. The sign is available in 110V ac and V ac versions, 50-60Hz. Please check that the voltage rating of the sign, as shown on the internal label, matches your supply voltage. The supply to the sign must be protected by a 1A fuse or circuit breaker. The supplied terminal block has a suitable fuse inside. The typical power requirement is 5W. The sign is usually controlled by a switch or other device which turns on power to the sign as required. Live Earth Neutral Wires should be fed to the backbox in accordance with national and local wiring regulations. The wiring must include live, neutral and earth. A three-way connector block is supplied with the sign. Always ensure that the supply is isolated before attempting any work on the wiring. Connect the incoming supply wires to one side of the terminal block as shown below. The brown wire must be connected to the fused terminal. Remove the two screws from the front of the sign and lift off the front cover and graphics panel. Offer the rear part of the sign to the backbox with the cutout in the top left corner (see fig. 1) and connect the wires into the connector block. The wires on the sign are coloured according to the following code: LIVE / PHASE NEUTRAL EARTH / GROUND BROWN BLUE GREEN/YELLOW When the connections have been made and checked, fit the rear part of the sign to the backbox using suitable screws according to the type of box, ensuring that the cutout is in the top left corner Page 9 of 11 Issue 3 2 January 2013

10 Attach the front cover and graphics panel using the supplied screws ensuring that the the legend is on the outside and the right way up. Ensure that the earth wire is connected to the front cover and that the wire is stowed out of the way so that the front cover fits snugly and the wire is not trapped. Apply power to the sign and check that it lights up and displays the message correctly. Product Disposal To help protect the environment do not dispose of this product with landfill waste. Take it to a waste recycling facility that processes electrical and electronic items, or return it to Lasermet or you local distributor for proper disposal.
