4 Field Service Contact Mountain Engineering II, Inc. before attempting to repair the 21 track reader. If we determine that a problem can be solved by replacing a FUR (Field Replaceable Unit) in the field we will issue a FRA number (Field Replacement Authorization) and send you the spare part. Replace the part following the instructions in this manual. Return the failing part to us. If we determine that the problem cannot be solved by replacing a part in the field we will issue a RMA number (Return Material Authorization). This is your authorization to send the unit to us for repair. Do not send units to us for repair without obtaining a RMA number. 5 Tools needed: Access to internal components 1/8 Allen wrench Antistatic wrist strap Before opening the unit 1. If a tape is loaded, unload the tape. Remove the reels from the takeup hub and from the supply hub. 2. Switch off the AC power and remove the power cord 3. Unplug the SCSI interface cable 4. Unplug the USB maintenance cable 5. Wear an antistatic wrist strap when manual contact with an electronic board is required Opening the unit 1. Make sure that unit is on an even and level table top 2. 6 3. Using 1/8 Allen wrench remove top row of 4 rubber feet 4. Carefully lower the unit back onto the table 5. Next, tilt the unit up by raising the front of the unit Front of unit Unit tilted with front of unit up 6. Remove middle row of 4 rubber feet 7. Remove 3 of the 4 feet in the top row. Do not remove 4 th foot at this time remove DO NOT REMOVE 8. Firmly hold bottom plate in place while removing last foot Remove last foot while holding bottom plate in place bottom plate 21 Track maintenance guide Rev 1.0 page 6
7 9. Carefully lower bottom plate Lower top edge of bottom plate to table Unit opened for access to internal components All internal components are now accessible. Note: While working on the unit take care not to bump into the deck plate. 21 Track maintenance guide Rev 1.0 page 7
8 Replacing components Tools needed: None Replacing a reel latch Replace defective latch with supplied replacement latch. Tools needed: 7/64 Allen wrench Replacing a hub 1. Locate defective hub Remove three screws using a 7/64 Allen wrench remove To remove the hub, remove the three screws than lift hub 21 Track maintenance guide Rev 1.0 page 8
9 2. Remove hub Removed hub Motor shaft after hub is removed 3. Install replacement hub using the screws removed in step 1. Replacing a motor assembly Tools needed: 7/64 Allen wrench 5/32 Allen wrench 1/8 Allen wrench to open the unit Antistatic wrist strap 1. First, the hub must be removed Follow steps 1 and 2 of Replacing a hub 2. Open unit. See Access to internal components. The electronic boards inside the 21 track reader are sensitive to static shock. 10 3. Unplug motor driver board power cable 4. Unplug motor driver board signal cable Power cable Signal cable Unplug the power cable and signal cable 5. The motor assembly is attached to the deck by four screws. Remove screws using a 5/32 Allen wrench. Remove screws Remove screws 6. Remove motor assembly 7. 11 Replacing the controller board Tools needed: Philips screw driver 1/8 Allen wrench to open the unit Antistatic wrist strap 1. Open unit. See Access to internal components for instructions on how to open the unit 2. Locate the controller board. The electronic boards are sensitive to static shock. A grounded antistatic wrist strap should be used. Operator panel assembly Controller board Supply motor assembly Take-up motor assembly 3. Unplug both head connectors To unplug a head connector turn both retaining screws at the same time. 13 7. Unplug SCSI cable SCSI cable 8. Unplug Term power cable Term power cable 9. Verify that all connectors are unplugged. Refer to Cables and Wiring Controller connectors for a drawing of the locations of the controller connectors. 21 Track maintenance guide Rev 1.0 page 13
14 10.Remove the six mounting screws that hold the controller board. Remove the screws at the bottom of the board first. Mounting screws Mounting screws Location of controller mounting screws Remove screws starting at the bottom of the board. Remove the screws close to the head connectors last 11. 15 Replacing the operator panel Tools needed: 5/64 Allen wrench Antistatic wrist strap 1. Turn off AC power and remove AC power cable 2. Locate the operator panel. The electronic boards are sensitive to static shock. A grounded antistatic wrist strap should be used. Operator panel 3. Using a 5/64 Allen wrench remove the four mounting screws. Do not remove any additional screws. Operator panel mounting screws Operator panel mounting screws Remove ONLY the four outside screws as shown. 16 4. Carefully remove the operator panel by tilting the panel to the right as shown and then lifting the panel up about 1. Tilt panel to right then lift up 5. Tilt panel to the left for access to the power and the signal cable 6. Unplug power cable 7. Unplug signal cable Unplug power cable Unplug signal cable Do not unplug USB cable 8. 17 Replacing the 5V Power Supply Tools needed: Philips screw driver Open end 5/16 wrench 1/8 Allen wrench to open the unit 1. Open unit. See Access to internal components for instructions on how to open the unit 2. Locate the 5V Power Supply 5V Power Supply 3. Unplug 2 pin AC connector 4. 18 5. Remove safety ground screw Using an open end 5/16 wrench and a Philips screw driver remove the safety ground screw and the green wire. Remove green wire Remove nut and screw 6. Remove remaining three mounting screws Remove Remove 7. Remove 5V Power Supply 8. 19 Replacing the 12V Power Supply Tools needed: Philips screw driver 11/32 nut driver 1/8 Allen wrench to open the unit 1. Open unit. See Access to internal components for instructions on how to open the unit 2. Locate the 12V Power Supply AC Terminal block 12V DC Terminal blocks 12V Power Supply 3. Locate the AC Terminal block and the DC Terminal blocks 4. Remove four 12V AC wires from the AC Terminal block Red White Yellow Black Do not remove the green wires. 21 Track maintenance guide Rev 1.0 page 19
20 5. Remove the four 12V AC wires from the wire clamps. Open wires clamps by sliding clamp latch horizontally Slide clamp latch horizontally either to the left or to the right 6. Pull wires towards the 12V power supply. 7. Remove red and black 12V DC wires from DC Terminal blocks Remove 12V DC power wire (red) Remove 12V DC ground wire (black) DC Terminal Blocks 21 Track maintenance guide Rev 1.0 page 20
21 8. Remove the four 12V Power Supply mounting screws using a 11/32 nut driver and a Philips screw driver Remove Remove 9. Remove the 12V Power Supply 10.Install replacement power supply by following the above steps in reverse order 21 Track maintenance guide Rev 1.0 page 21
22 Replacing the Back Panel Module Tools needed: 5/64 Allen wrench Philips screw driver 1/8 Allen wrench to open the unit Antistatic wrist strap The Back Panel includes the AC module, the fan, the SCSI connectors, and the Term Power switch. AC module fan SCSI Connectors Term Power switch Fuse box 1. Open unit. See Access to internal components for instructions on how to open the unit 2. Locate the AC Terminal block and the DC Terminal blocks AC Terminal block 12V DC Terminal blocks Back Panel 21 Track maintenance guide Rev 1.0 page 22
23 3. Remove all 5 AC wires from the input side on the AC Terminal block Do not remove the wires from the output side of the AC Terminal block Red White Yellow Black Green Do not remove AC Terminal Block 4. Remove the red 12V fan wire and the black ground fan wire from the DC Terminal Blocks. 24 5. Unplug the SCSI cable from the Controller board SCSI cable Controller board 6. Unplug the Term Power Cable from the Controller board Term power cable 21 Track maintenance guide Rev 1.0 page 24
25 7. Carefully lower the deck unto the bottom panel. Make sure that none of the 12 standoffs hit components on the bottom plate. Lower deck onto the bottom plate 8. Remove all 12 back panel screws Remove Remove Back panel left side Remove 6 screws from left side of panel Remove Remove Back panel right side Remove 6 screws from right side of panel 9. 26 10.Install replacement back panel by following the above steps in reverse order Replacing the Head assembly Tools needed: Philips screw driver 1/8 Allen wrench to open the unit 3mm Allen wrench for skew adjustment Antistatic wrist strap Skew block Head assembly Head 1. Open unit. See Access to internal components for instructions on how to open the unit 2. Unplug both head connectors To unplug a head connector turn both retaining screws at the same time. 27 3. Feed both connectors through the rectangular opening in the deck 4. Carefully lower the deck unto the bottom panel. Make sure that none of the 12 standoffs hit components on the bottom plate. Lower deck onto the bottom plate 5. Remove skew adjustment screw using 3mm skew adjustment tool Remove skew adjustment screw 21 Track maintenance guide Rev 1.0 page 27
28 6. Remove both mounting screws using a Philips screw driver Remove both screws 7. Remove head assembly 8. Install replacement head assembly following the above steps in reverse order. 9. 29 Replacing the Roller assembly Tools needed: 7/64 Allen wrench 1. Locate defective roller. There are 6 rollers in the tape path. 2.
