1 The PSNsim is hardware simulator that simulates all parts of power system from generation to utilization. The PSNsim is a scaled down model of the real power system that provides an experimental environment where motivated students, researchers can learn and gain piratical experience in the domain of power system. PSNsim Lab is a dedicated space equipped with state-of-the-art power system devices such as Generators, Wind turbines, Solar PV, transformers, transmission line models, distribution networks, consumer loads, protection relays, automation system, monitoring and control system, communication networks and advanced software. This is to enhance faculty and students research and learning experience in electrical power industry by providing dedicated lab to conduct research activities and projects. The objective of the PSNsim is to conduct the following research activities Power system control and operation Renewable energy Smart grid Power electronics SCADA and automation Distribution Management System Power Quality Analysis Energy Management System Power System optimization Protection and rely coordination Deregulated energy market Communication Network Architecture and protocols Power system analysis, dynamics, computation, economics, transmission and distribution A PSNsim is based on six modules Generation Module Substation Module Transmission Module Distribution Module SCADA Module Control Center Module Individula modules specified in this catalogue, can also be delivered on request. Warrenty is valid 12 months from delivery. The waranty covers repair or exchange of defective parts, due to faulty design. 1
2 System Configuration The configuration of the Power System Network simulator is shown in figure-1. Figure-1 Configuration of Power System Network Simulator 2
3 Generation Module Power System Network Simulator (PSNsim) PSNsim has a prime mover (Motor) generator set, Solar PV panels and Micro wind turbine to simulate power generation. Synchronization, Governor and AVR functions are controlled by the PLC supplied with PSNsim. Generation and bus bar protection relays are provided for the generation modules. The Generation Module consists of Motor Generator set (2 x 0.5 kva, Single Phase, 220 V, 50 Hz) Renewable energy sources like 200 W wind turbine, 200 W solar PV, Inverters, 200AH battery Synchronizing relay Generator Control Panel Generator Protection relay-reverse Power, Under voltage, Over current Active power (Frequency) Control Reactive Power (Voltage) Control Synchronization Auto and Manual Load Shearing, Automatic Load Frequency Control (ALFC), Area Control Error (ACE) Protection relay coordination Substation Module The Substation Module consists of Step up/step down Transformer ( 1 kva Auto transformer) Bus Bars- Double Bus Bar, One and Half Breaker, bus coupler Circuit Breakers (All breaker functions are operated by contactor relays),ct,pt Protection Relays- Over current, Under voltage relays Volt meters, Ammeters Voltage regulation Shunt Compensation Transformer loading Remote / Local operations Interface with Matlab Simulink 3
4 Transmission Line Module The Transmission Line Module consists of Scaled down transmission model Single Phase, Resistor, Inductor, Capacitor connected in Pi configuration Shunt Compensation Series Compensation Protection Relays- Over current, Under Voltage Multi Function meters Circuit Breakers (All breaker functions are operated by contactor relays), CT, PT Transmission Line Loss Calculation Ferrient effect Shunt and Series Compensation Fault Simulation Interface with Matlab Simulink Line opening and closing Distribution Network Module The Distribution Network Module consists of Distribution Transformer (1 kva Auto transformer) Capacitor Banks Loads: Induction Motor (Single Phase, 0.5 HP, 230 V, 50 Hz), Lamp Loads 1 kw Protection Relays- Under voltage, Over current Multi Function meters Circuit Breakers (All breaker functions are operated by contactor relays), CT, PT Distribution Management System Load Shedding Relay Coordination Motor Starting studies Interface with Matlab Simulink Power factor improvement studies 4
5 SCADA Module SCADA system is used to monitor and control a plant or equipment in PSNsim. This system encompasses the transfer of data between a SCADA central host computer and a number of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and/ or Programmable Logic Controllers and the central host and the operator terminals. A SCADA system usually consists of the following subsystems A human -Machine Interface (HMI) Remote terminal Units (RTU) Programmable Logic controllers Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) Communication System Sensors and measurement instruments The SCADA Module consists of SCADA Server and Client PCs SCADA Run time License and Developer License Communication Protocols-Modbus, OPC Network Switches Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Distributed Control System (DCS) configuration Remote Monitoring of electrical parameters in real time Communication with PLC and Field devices Plotting of measured values over time scale. Alarm and Event log Processing, analyzing and exporting of measured data 5
