Calibration Information Module Calibration Data RTD Models Active Rref Resistance of nominal 248 ohm reference resistor as calculated by measurements during the Ohm Meter Calibration process. Active Roffset Offset value for reference resistor as calculated by measurements during the Ohm Meter Calibration process. R0 Resistance at 0.0 C. R0 value is used for calculating temperature from the measured resistance. For the highest accuracy of measurements, it should be set to match the R0 value of the probe being used. It may be manually entered or may be automatically calculated and updated by performing Probe (system) Calibration. Box will turn red if value is out of acceptable range of 100 ± 10 ohms. Select Calibration to Perform: The Drop down box allows the user to select one of two calibration routines. To select, simply highlight the desired routine and click the Calibrate button. A calibration routine with step by step instructions will take you through the calibration process. See DSX section for DSX current loop calibration instructions. 1) Ohm Meter Calibration Performs the calibration of the Electronics to ensure it accurately measures resistance. This routine requires the use of known precision resistances. A precision resistor decade box or precision fixed resistors may be used. Some electronic RTD simulators may also work, but we recommend validating their use with the Digistem prior to using them for calibration. R0 will automatically be set to ohms for this calibration and upon completion, the user will be given the option to return to the initial R0 or leave it at ohms. Page 6 of 24

7 2) Probe (system) Calibration Performs the calibration of the RTD probe to the meter electronics. This method can be performed when equipment to measure the probes R0 value is not available. This should not be performed if the R0 value is manually entered into the R0 field. Existing Meter Calibration Settings Factory These settings are the default settings and can only be set at the factory. Active These settings are the calibration coefficients used in calculating temperature from the measured probe resistance. These may be changed by the user via the Ohm Meter Calibration routine. Restore Factory Settings This button loads the Active settings registers with the current values displayed under the Factory settings. This is used in the event the Active settings have been corrupted by invalid calibration. NOTE: Restoring the Factory settings will cause the current active settings to be deleted. A new calibration will need to be performed if new Active settings need to be acquired. Showing info box when mouse is over LCD Refresh: title. Fig. 1 Page 7 of 24

8 4. CALIBRATION RTD Models 4.1. Theory of Calibration With respect to calibration, the RTD thermometer can be viewed as two independent systems with different calibration requirements. The first system is comprised of the meter electronics. The meter calibration is performed so that the meter will measure resistance accurately. This is accomplished by using known, fixed resistances of a specified accuracy. Wahl recommends using resistances with a known accuracy equal to or greater than ±0.009 ohms. The calibration routine also allows entry of the exact resistance. This will allow the technician to enter the calibrated resistor value from a NIST traceable laboratory data sheet or by measuring a nominal valued resistance with a precision ohmmeter, such as an HP3458A, and entering the measured value. See METER CALIBRATION below for details. The second system is the addition of a specific probe to the meter. Due to manufacturing processes, there are variations in the RTD s R0 coefficient. To increase the total system accuracy, the electronics may be programmed with this value so that the microprocessor can accurately calculate the actual temperature from the measured resistance. See PROBE CALIBRATION below for details Meter Calibration Ohm Meter Calibration Window Selecting Resistance Screen 1. Sets R0 to 100 ohms in the event it is set otherwise. 2. Prompts user to Connect 50 ohm Standard Resistance to Meter Input (90 ohm for DST600 series), user may optionally enter exact value of Resistance into the Measured Resistance box. 10 Press yes to return R0 to its original value or press no to leave R0 set to ohms Probe Calibration There are two methods of calibrating the probe to the meter. The first method is done without the aid of the Probe (system) Calibration routine found under the Select Calibration to Perform window. For this method, a precision 4-wire ohmmeter is required. The second method can be used if a precision 4-wire ohmmeter is not available. Probe with Precision 4-wire Ohmmeter Calibration 1. Insert the probe (disconnected from the Digistem) into an ice bath and allow it to stabilize. 2. Measure its resistance with a precision 4-wire ohmmeter. 3. Enter the measured resistance value into the R0 field of the Calibration software. 4. Click the SET button. Probe without Precision 4-wire Ohmmeter Calibration - Probe (system) Calibration Window 1. Click on the Select Calibration to Perform drop down box, and select Probe (system) Calibration 2. Click the Calibrate button 3. Placing probe in Ice Bath window will open. Place probe in Ice Bath and allow to stabilize. 4. Click Next button. (Click Cancel to abort the calibration) 5. Waiting for stabilization window will appear for 10 seconds, followed by Averaging Samples window. When the sample count gets to 10 the Capture R0 button will become active. The software continues to collect samples at approximately once per second and displays a running average of the most recent 10 samples. This allows the user to verify the probe has stabilized in the ice bath. 6. When the probe stability is acceptable, click Capture R0. 7. Capture R0 window will appear asking if you wish to use this value for R0. Click Yes to capture or No to return to the Averaging samples window. The unit will continue to collect samples and display them. You may re-capture R0 or Cancel to exit the program. Page 10 of 24

11 8. Software will display Probe Calibration Success window. 9. Click OK 10. Software will return to main screen and new value will be loaded into the R0 register and window Error Windows The following error box may occur when in the Meter Only Calibration routine and if the input resistance is not within approximately 4 ohms of the requested nominal setting. One or both of the following error messages may occur when in the Meter Only Calibration and the calculated calibration values don t meet the expected results. The most likely cause of this is that the resistances applied were not equal to the specified resistance or the resistance was changed during the calibration measurements. This may be corrected by entering the actual resistance of the standard used. Page 11 of 24

Typing a wrong value in one of the windows is a likely cause of error. In the event the unit cannot be calibrated, please contact the factory. Page 14 of 24

15 7. DST600 PROBE ID 7.1. Theory of Operation Probe ID allows a specific probe to be associated with a specific meter. The meter will only display a temperature when it has the correct probe connected to it. The primary reason for this association is that in case of a failed probe, it helps prevent someone from replacing the probe without going through a calibration process. The unit will display Prb indicating an unauthorized probe is being used. To authorize a new probe, the unit must be connected to the programming or calibration software, where it is recommended the unit be recalibrated to ensure accuracy. The Probe ID may be overridden using the Enable Probe ID field. When the box is checked, the probe ID will function normally. Unchecked will disable the feature. Due to the technology used, on remote cables with connectors the Probe ID has a limit of about 28 meters (92 feet) maximum cable length. Fig Definitions (Reference Fig. 3) Additionally to the previous standard definitions, the DST600 software contains the following information for Probe ID: Page 15 of 24

19 Millivolt Calibration: Used to calibrate the mv measurement capabilities of the meter. This is performed by inserting known millivolt signals via copper wires to the DST400 input connector. If this calibration is going to be performed, it must be performed before the Cold Junction Calibration, as Millivolt Calibration will alter the Cold Junction Calibration. Cold Junction Calibration: Used to calibrate the Cold Junction Compensation correction for a given thermocouple type. This is performed by using a Thermocouple Simulator to insert a 25 C equivalent signal, via thermocouple wire of the selected type, to the DST400 input connector. This calibration must be performed after changing thermocouple type. Existing Thermocouple Calibration Settings Factory These settings are the default settings and can only be set at the factory. Restore Factory Settings This button loads the Active settings registers with the current values displayed under the Factory settings. 20 9. CALIBRATION Thermocouple Models 9.1. Theory of Calibration Meter Calibration is performed to ensure that the meter will measure mv signals accurately. This is accomplished by using known, DC millivolt signals of a specified accuracy. Wahl recommends using mv signal generators with a known accuracy equal to or better than ± 6.0µV and thermocouple emissions of ±0.30 C (includes CJC) at 25 C. The calibration routine also allows entry of the exact millivolt signal. This will allow the technician to enter the calibrated mv value from a NIST traceable laboratory data sheet or by measuring a less accurate mv signal with a precision voltmeter, such as an Agilent 3458A, and entering the measured value. See METER CALIBRATION below for details. Cold Junction Compensation (CJC) Calibration is required to calibrate the cold junction circuit to provide the proper amount of correction for the specific thermocouple type being used. It is essential that this calibration be performed after changing the meter s thermocouple type. While the millivolt calibration is performed with copper wire connected to the meter, the CJC calibration must be performed with the specific thermocouple type wire. The correction factor used by the meter is the mv equivalent of the temperature offset measured in accordance with the selected thermocouple type s mv to temperature table Meter Calibration mv Meter Calibration Window Selecting Millivolt Screen 1. Prompts user to Connect 0 Millivolt Standard to Meter Input, user may optionally enter exact value of millivolt signal into the Measured Millivolts (mv) box. 2. Click Next to continue (Clicking Cancel will return to main screen). Waiting for Stabilization Screen 3. Unit waits 10 seconds for stabilization of capacitors Averaging Samples Screen 4. Unit takes 10 readings to average for calibration Selecting Millivolt Screen 5. Prompts user to Connect 75 Millivolt Standard to Meter Input, user may optionally enter exact value of millivolt signal into the Measured Millivolts (mv) box. 6. Click Next to continue (Clicking Cancel will return to main screen). Note: When performing the Millivolt Calibration, during the calibration of the 75mV, on occasion the calibrated value will show as the maximum mv value of mv. If this occurs, the unit is at its maximum value and may show inaccuracy at higher temperatures. To remedy this potential problem, simply recalibrate the unit and when DSTCAL prompts you to input 75mV, set the mv source to 74.0mV and type 74.0 into the DSTCAL window for the actual value entered. This will likely correct the problem. Page 20 of 24
