1 INK JET PRINTER FOR INDUSTRIAL MARKING Hitachi Printer Standard Specification Model RX [ RX-S, RX-B type] This document describes the general specifications and functions of the Hitachi IJ Printer RX. It is requested that you thoroughly read this document as you consider purchasing Hitachi IJ printers. Information in this document is subject to change without notice. All inquiries should be addressed to your nearest Hitachi distributor.

2 Before using the printer, thoroughly read the following safety precautions for optimum printer use. You should observe the precautions set forth below in order to use the product properly and Safety Precautions avoid endangering or causing damage to you or other persons. For the purpose of clarifying the severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence, the precautions are classified into two categories, WARNING and CAUTION, which both describe the hazardous situations that may arise if you ignore the precautions and perform an incorrect handling or operating procedure. The precautions in these two categories are both important and must therefore be observed without fail. WARNING CAUTION WARNING is used to indicate the presence of a hazard which may cause severe personal injury or death if the warning against performing an incorrect handling procedure is ignored. CAUTION is used to indicate the presence of a hazard which may cause personal injury or property damage if the caution against performing an incorrect handling procedure is ignored. If the caution in the CAUTION category is ignored, serious results may occur depending on the situation. After the manual has been read, it must be stored in such a location that all printer operation personnels can refer to it at all times. All the instructions set forth in this manual are important and must therefore be observed without fail. Pictograph Examples The symbols are used to indicate precautions (including those related to potential hazards and warnings) to be observed. Detailed information is furnished by a picture within the symbol outline (a shock hazard is indicated by the example shown at left). The symbols are used to describe prohibited actions. The details of a prohibited action are given by a picture within or near the symbol outline (the example shown at left dictates that you must keep flames away). The symbols are used to describe required actions. Detailed instructions are given by a picture within the symbol outline (the example shown at left dictates that a ground connection must be made). - i -

3 Safety Precautions (Continued) WARNING Ensure that there is no flame-generating or arc-generating device around the printer. The ink and makeup are both flammable and could be ignited or cause fire. Fire can be generated by matches, lighters, cigarettes, heaters, stoves, gas burners, welders, grinders or static electricity. Arcs may be generated from open-type relays, switches, or brush motors. Before handling the ink and makeup, remove static electricity from your body, peripheral equipment, and so on. In the interest of safety, position a dry-chemical fire extinguisher near the printer. Since the ink and makeup contain organic solvents, install the printer at an adequately ventilated location. (1) Never install the printer in an enclosed space. (2) Connect exhaust equipment to the printer in order to prevent it from filling with organic solvent vapor. Use an AC voltage of 100 to 120V or 200 to 240V ±10% only and a power frequency of 50 Hz or 60 Hz only. If the above requirements are not met, the electric parts may overheat and burn, creating a risk of fire or electric shock. Never drain the ink or makeup waste solution into a public sewer system. Waste disposal must comply with all appropriate regulations. Consult the appropriate regulatory agency for further information. The printer must be managed in compliance with all appropriate regulations. Read and understand the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before using any ink or makeup. If an earthquake, fire, or other emergency occurs while the printer is engaged in printing or just turned on, press the main power switch to turn off the power. Use Hitachi approved consumables and periodic replacement parts. Using products that are not designated by Hitachi possibly causes failure in certain functions. Ensure that all electrical wiring, connections and grounding comply with applicable codes. Properly connect the printer to its dedicated ground. Complete the above procedure to avoid electrical shock hazards. When performing welding operation, keep enough space between IJ printer and welding work area to prevent the arc from becoming the origin of fire. Also, ensure to employ the insulation of the printhead and IJ printer frame to avoid the welding current flow to the control section in the printer, as well as making the earth connection exclusively for the printer. - ii -

4 Safety Precautions (Continued) CAUTION Take operator training for Hitachi IJP before use. The operator training will be conducted when the printer is installed and a trial run is performed to adjust the unit. Therefore, the person(s) responsible for the printer should take the training. Use the printer in the environment of ambient temperature and relative humidity 30-90%RH (no condensation) that are specified for each nozzle diameter and ink used. (1) If ambient humidity is 85 to 90%RH, please purge inside of print head by dry air. (2) If you use the printer under environmental conditions other than stated above, print irregularities, erratic printer operations, and printer malfunction may occur. Since the ink and makeup contain organic solvents, observe the following handling precautions. (1) Secure adequate space for the ink/makeup handling area and printer installation site. At least 200 m 3 must be provided per print head. Ensure that adequate ventilation is provided. (2) When handling the ink or makeup, wear protective gloves and safety goggles to avoid direct skin contact. If the ink or makeup comes into contact with skin, wash thoroughly with soap and warm or cold water. (3) When transferring the ink or makeup to or from a bottle, exercise caution to prevent it from coming into contact with the printer or surrounding articles. If there is any spillage, immediately wipe it clean using a cloth moistened with ethyl alcohol. (4) Notice that there is a possibility that a cap and a content may fly with inner pressure when opening the container of ink and makeup. (5) Please open a cap of container on an even place. Ink and makeup must be stored as flammable liquids. Storage must comply with local regulatory requirements. Consult the appropriate regulatory agency for further information. If extraneous noise enters the printer, it may malfunction or break down. For maximum noise immunity, observe the following installation and wiring precautions. (1) Ensure that 100 to 120 VAC or 200 to 240 VAC power cables are not bundled with other power supply cables. (2) Insulate the printer main body and print head so that they do not come into direct contact with the conveyor or other devices. (3) If the employed print target detector is housed in a metal case, use a plastic mounting brace for the purpose of insulating the detector from the conveyor and other devices. (4) Be sure that the print target detector wiring is not bundled together with other power supply cables. - iii -

The character width can be increased in the range of twofold to ninefold. The standard-width and the increased-width characters are allowed to coexist. The character height can be adjusted by changing the character height setting and the distance to the print target (10 to 30 mm at 65 µm nozzle machine). This function is used to change the horizontal character dot pitch for character width adjustment purposes. The adjustment range varies with the Line speed and ink drop use rate settings. Use this function for fine character width adjustment. In case of rough adjustment (increasing the width), adjust the ink drop use rate setting first. For better print quality, it is better to set ink drop use rate as small as possible

13 Item Specifications This function is used to change the positioning orientation of the characters to be printed. One of the following four character orientations can be selected. [Font: 5x3, 5x5, 7x5] [Example] Chimney print 5x3 dots The inter-character space can be adjusted over the following ranges. 5x3 dots: 0 to 27 dots 5x5 dots: 0 to 27 dots 7x5 dots: 0 to 25 dots Inter-character space: 1dot Characters are rotated by 180 degrees for each printing and printed so that the characters can be read by viewing from the top and the bottom. The plural print items can be placed freely and printed. Horizontal (X) coordinate and Vertical coordinate (Y) shall be specified for placement. The range of Horizontal (X) coordinate and Vertical (Y) coordinate are as follows. RX-S RX-S (Option) Horizontal (X) Print items are placed freely. 15 Item Calendar function [Calendar-related function] Calendar function with zero suppression Month code print function [Calendar-related function] Specifications This function is used to automatically update the date and the time ( hour, minute, and second ). Not only the manufacturing date but also the "USE BY" date with offset setting and other information can be printed by automatic calculation. [Note] No offset can be set to seconds. [Example] When the "USE BY" date setting is 10 days after the manufacturing date of December , the following is printed. MANUFACTURED: USE BY: The following print is obtained on the next day. MANUFACTURED: USE BY: It is possible to specify whether or not to include today when performing offset calculations. If today is included, "one day before the same day" will be the result. (= Offset from yesterday ) [Example] In case where the "USE BY" date is 1 month after the manufacturing date of November 1, 2013: (a) When "Offset From yesterday is designated: USE BY (b) When "Offset From today" is designated: USE BY Up to 4 digit can be set to represent the year (AD). One calendar block consists of up to 20 characters. Up to 8 (RX-S* ) calendar blocks using Calendar-related functions can be set. * RX-S: Up to 2 (Option: Up to 8), RX-B: Up to 2 Both any Calendar-related function and the Count function can not be set in the same block. In one block, EITHER ONE of Calendar-related functions, such as an example of up to nine (9) of [Year, Month, Day, Hour, Minutes, Second, Serial date, Week number, Day of the week] OR Work shift code print function OR Time count print function can be set by itself. This function is used to suppress the printing of 0 when the tenth digit of the month or day is 0. [Example] (Substituted with space) MANUFACTURED MANUFACTURED Spaces are printed. [Example] (Substituted with space and left-justified) MANUFACTURED MANUFACTURED Spaces are printed. This function is used to print the months from January to December using 3-character code. This function distinguish the leap years from the common years. [Example] 1/1 1/2 2/28 2/29 3/1 12/31 Common year Leap year This function can calculate date offset. [Example] Prepared : Use before : (Offset: 4 days) Number of days : 35 Up to 8 (RX-S* ) calendar blocks using Calendar-related functions can be set. * RX-S: Up to 2 (Option: Up to 8), RX-B: Up to 2 Both any Calendar-related function and the Count function can not be set in the same block. In one block, EITHER ONE of Calendar-related functions, such as an example of up to nine (9) of [Year, Month, Day, Hour, Minutes, Second, Serial date, Week number, Day of the week] OR Work shift code print function OR Time count print function can be set by itself. This function is used to print the week number of the year. The week is defined as starting on Monday and ending on Sunday. The week which includes January 4th is counted as the first week of the year. At the beginning of the year, the days that are not included in the first week are counted as the last week of the previous year. [Example] Week number at the end and the beginning of the year: Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun Week number December January The Day of the week print function makes it possible to express the Day of the week using the numbers, as shown in the table below, and print them. Type of character for printing calendar "Day of the week": Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun 1 to The Week number and the Day of the week can be changed by Calendar substitution function. Either one of the following two modes can be selected by panel button. Signal ON period --- Printing is repeated a fixed number of times at fixed intervals while the signal of the print target sensor is ON. OFF-ON transition ---- Printing is repeated a fixed number of times at fixed intervals once the signal of the print target sensor turns ON. A Repeat count can be set up to This function cannot be executed together with the Tracking function. This function achieves printing even when two or more print targets are positioned between the print target sensor and the print head. Up to four print targets can be positioned between the print target sensor and the print head. This function cannot be executed together with the Repeat print function. When a transparent bag, bottle, or the like is detected, the signal of the print target sensor may fluctuate between ON and OFF and become unstable (chattering), thereby causing issuance of a "Print overlap fault" alarm. To avoid such a situation, this function is exercised to ignore the next signal input for a set period of time upon receipt of the first signal input of the print target sensor or for a period of printing. Permitted setting ranges from 0 to 9999 ms. The following error (deviation from setting) is unavoidable. When the setting is between 0 and 99 ms: Maximum error = ±10 ms When the setting is between 100 and 9999 ms: Maximum error = ±5% Note, however, that no minus values result. When Until end of print is selected, this function can not be executed together with the Tracking function or the Repeat print function. Target sensor timer function This function makes printing stop and detects an abnormal flow of print targets when the signal input of the print target sensor exceeds the preset time. If this "sensor out" condition occurs before the print count reaches the preset value of Repeat count, printing stops immediately. The acceptable setting ranges from 0 to 99.9 s in units of 0.1s. The maximum error (deviation from setting) is ±0.1 s. However, no minus values result

When the line speed is stable, the character width can be adjusted by changing the ink drop use rate. By increasing the ink drop use rate (i.e. 1/4 1/3 1/2), the print character width becomes narrower. [Note] The print character width can be adjusted by use of the character width adjustment function, but in case of the character width adjustment function, it is not possible to improve the print quality. When ink drop use rate is set to 1/1*, the fine adjustment of print speed setting is possible by using high-speed print mode. In case of 65µm nozzle, high-speed print mode (HM, NM, QM) is selectable. * Ink drop use rate 1/1 is available for RX-S as an option. In order to use Speed compensation fine control, Tracking function, Repeat print function and Target sensor filter function, check the table below before setting.
