Introduction The Canlan network communications device provides seamless network connectivity for Cansec access control products. The CanLan supports up to 16 CP40 or 30 Smartlock control panels. On Maestro systems, network traffic only occurs when events or commands need to be relayed between the host and the control panels. Bandwidth is conserved through a complete implementation of the CP40 protocol on the control panels. A standard 10 Base-T network connection is provided for interfacing purposes. This allows the use of low cost Category 3 (or higher) unshielded twisted pair wiring, typically present in most LAN environments. With onboard processing and low bandwidth usage, the Canlan offloads work from host software with minimal impact on shared networks. Key Features Supports RS485 communications Supports up to 16 CP40 control panels Supports up to 30 SmartLock Pro control panels Onboard communication application conserves bandwidth Minimal impact on shared networks CanLan Page 4 of 31

Setup and Configuration NOTE: The following describes how to configure the Canlan using Canlan Version 7 software. To use this software, the Canlan must be using Version 7 firmware. If you are using an older version of the Canlan firmware, a firmware update kit is available from Cansec Systems. The configuration menu is grouped into four sections: Address Configuration, Operational Mode, Remote Diagnostics, and Serial Interface. Each section reflects a group of settings that will be stored in the Canlan's flash memory. ADDRESS CONFIGURATION The Address Configuration section defines the static IP address that will be assigned to the Canlan as well as its subnet mask and gateway address in the event the host PC is on a different subnet than the Canlan. In most corporate environments, the specific values for the IP address, subnet mask and gateway must be obtained from the IT staff managing the network. Failure to do so could result in address conflicts and other routing errors. Enter the following information: IP Address Subnet Mask Gateway Port CanLan Page 14 of 31
OPERATIONAL MODE Operational Mode The Canlan supports several modes of operation, some intelligent, designed to ease host workload and network traffic and others acting as simple Ethernet to RS485 bridges. The modes are selectable on a product basis for simplicity. Choose one of the three operational modes: Maestro SmartLock Pro/Connect Zodiac Max Idle Auto-Disconnect The idle auto-disconnect inactivity timer drops any active host connection after a specified interval (in minutes) during which no data is transmitted or received. This option helps prevent against a hung connection with a host which has gone offline without properly closing the socket connection or other situations where packet loss may occur. Recommended Setting For SmartLock Pro/Connect, it is highly recommended that idle autodisconnect is enabled with a value of 1 for the duration in minutes. Idle auto-disconnect is not needed for Maestro systems, because the Maestro interface monitors the connection to ensure it is active. CanLan Page 15 of 31
REMOTE DIAGNOSTICS The Canlan provides a rich set of diagnostic features to assist in both the installation and ongoing maintenance of field hardware. Additionally diagnostic software is available to assist in connectivity issues between a host and a Canlan (See the Canlan Troubleshooting Guide for more details). The Canlan implements a set of diagnostic commands which can be issued from the Advanced Diagnostic software tool. In addition, it continues to support execution tracing at selectable detail levels via Telnet or the Advanced Diagnostic software tool. Enable Remote Diagnostics The remote diagnostic interface available on port 23 can be disabled if network security is essential. Optional Password If remote diagnostics is enabled, an optional 8-character password can be entered to control access to diagnostic commands and the information they provide. CanLan Page 16 of 31
SERIAL INTERFACE In this section, select which of the two available serial interfaces will be used for the connection between the Canlan and the control panel(s). NOTE: this does not refer to the connection type used to configure the CanLan. RS232 Interface. If the CanLan will be connected to the control panels using an RS232 connector, choose RS232 Interface. This refers to the connection type between the Canlan and the control panels, not the cable type used to configure the Canlan. RS485 Interface. If the Canlan will be connected to the control panels using an RS485 connector, choose RS485 Interface. Setup When an operational mode is chosen, the default communication parameters are set for the selected control panel type. These settings may be overridden by clicking the Setup button. The current communication parameters are displayed in the status bar below the interface selection buttons for easy confirmation. SAVING THE SETTINGS Choose SAVE from the commands at the bottom of the menu screen. 22 Configuring Host Software Once the Canlan has been configured and connected to a control panel, test the configuration by attempting a connection to the Canlan from the appropriate host software. The following sections give a brief overview of how to define a new Canlan using either: Maestro software Smartlock Pro software. MAESTRO Canlans are defined within Maestro as virtual trunk lines beginning at trunk 17 through trunk 256. The virtual trunks are configured by choosing EDIT > SYSTEM > NETWORK TRUNK ADDRESSES from the menu. CanLan Page 22 of 31
Once selected, the Network Trunk Addresses dialog is displayed. From this dialog, network trunks may be added, edited or deleted. Each network trunk refers to a Canlan and the Canlan s IP address and TCP port must be entered here. Once a new trunk has been defined, Maestro (or the Maestro server if a network version) must be restarted before the changes will take place. Restart the software and view the current connection status of the trunk by choosing VIEW > COMMUNICATIONS from the menu. The communications status window will be displayed. Select the trunk line from the drop list at the bottom to display the desired Canlan connection. The Canlan IP address, port and connection status are shown. Control panels should be added to test the RS232/RS485 side of the connection. To add new CP40 control panels, choose EDIT > PANEL DEFINITIONS from the menu. The panel selection list is shown first. Choose NEW to add a new control panel to the Canlan virtual trunk. The panel definition dialog is shown below. CanLan Page 23 of 31
This example assumes that a CP40 control panel has been wired to the Canlan and configured appropriately. In the first edit box (Panel Address) the control panel panel address must be entered as set on the CP40 address dip switches. In the next entry, enter the number of the new virtual trunk we defined in the Network Trunk Definitions dialog. Enter one or more card readers each with its own unique reader id and name and then press OK. We now have defined both the Canlan and one CP40 control panel which is connected to it. Once again, check the communication statistics by choosing VIEW -> COMMUNICATIONS from the menu. CanLan Page 24 of 31
Communication Problems If there is a communication problem between the Canlan and the access control panel, it will be reflected in the Timeouts column for each respective control panel. The Timeouts column counts the failure of the control panel to respond to data polls by the Canlan. CanLan Page 25 of 31
SMARTLOCK PRO Each reader or SmartLock control panel defined within the SmartLock Pro software has a connection tab where the means of communication is defined. After connecting a SmartLock control panel to the Canlan, run the Pro software and choose the Readers view. Press NEW on the toolbar to define a new reader. The reader definition dialog at right is displayed. Enter the address of the new control panel that was connected to the Canlan and give it a name. Select the Connection tab Direct Serial Connection - choose this option if the control panel connects to the PC through a serial communications device (CLAUSB). Network Connection - if the control panel connects to the PC through a CanLan, choose this option and enter the static IP address of the CanLan Host Name - if you have given the CanLan a name on the DNS server, choose this option and enter the port number. Check with your system administrator for host name. CanLan Page 26 of 31
Verify the Canlan connection by selecting VIEW > STATISTICS from the menu bar. The communication statistics window will appear, displaying statistics about connected control panels as well as information regarding the current Canlan connection state. Network Column The Network column indicates whether the control panel is connected via a Canlan or not. CanLan Page 27 of 31
Net Status Column If a control panel is connected to via the Canlan, the Net Status column indicates the current connection state between the host and the Canlan. If the host is attempting to connect but has not completed a connection, the status will be displayed as Connecting. Under normal circumstances, this should switch to the Connected status within a second or two after the connection is initiated. If the status remains in the Connecting state, then there maybe an issue with that Canlan configuration or socket connectivity issues through routers and/or firewalls. Offline Column The Offline column displays the actual control panel status and maybe either Yes or No. Yes means that the Canlan is good, but the control panel is not responding. This may indicate control panel address problems, wiring problems between the Canlan and SmartLock control panel or incorrect interface or operational mode selection within the Canlan configuration software. CanLan Page 28 of 31
Determining MAC Addresses Some installations may require Canlan MAC address information for switching or filtering purposes. A MAC address consists of 6 bytes typically expressed in hexadecimal format. The first 3 bytes are a manufacturers code and are fixed. The remaining 3 bytes are unique for each device produced by that manufacturer. The manufacture s code for the Canlan is C2 with the remain 3 bytes differing for each unit. If the Canlan is currently installed and operational, the MAC address can be determined using the arp program available from the command line. Open a command line window and enter the commands as shown below. In this example, the Canlan at IP address has a MAC address of: C2-C3-EB-B8 CanLan Page 29 of 31
If the unit has not been installed yet, the last three bytes (6 characters) are stenciled on the CPU module as shown below. The MAC address is the same as the previous example: C2-C3-EB-B8 CanLan Page 30 of 31
Appendix I TROUBLESHOOTING A CONNECTION Invalid Configuration If during startup, the Canlan determines that the current flash memory configuration is invalid, LED B will flash on and off every second. The Canlan will default to IP address It is important to note the status of LED B (RS485 Port Activity) if connecting through the Ethernet interface. Troubleshooting an Invalid Configuration If LED B is flashing, first make sure all information entered in the configuration software (including IP address) is correct and then press SAVE. Power off the Canlan, wait a few seconds, and power it back on again. LED B should stop flashing while in the 20-second configuration mode. Recheck the information entered in the configuration software. Configuration vs Host Software Host software such as Maestro or Smartlock Pro will be unable to connect to a Canlan while an active connection exists between the Canlan and the configuration software. NOTE: if you are attempting to reconfigure a Canlan that has already been configured, don't enter the default IP address ( ). Use the IP settings that were programmed into the Canlan when it was configured. If you do not know the origingal IP settings, use a serial connection instead. CanLan Page 31 of 31
