2 Application Solutions was founded in 1989 as an electronic design consultancy. It commenced manufacturing public address and voice alarm products around 15 years ago in response to demand from London Underground and others. The genesis of the VAR routers that still make up the backbone of the ASL range today was in that demand for high reliability, highly qualified products to meet demanding standards. Using that as a foundation, the company, which is still privately owned by the original directors, now produces the most innovative and powerful products in their field, whilst adhering to the original design drivers of reliability and adherence to standards. ASL is located in Lewes in Sussex, UK with it s own factory, EMC test areas, validation laboratory and offices. ASL offers training and is always pleased to welcome our customers and their customers in turn to our facility. ASL in 2013 This year ASL stands at a crossroads in it s development. Many of the products that have formed the backbone of the ASL PA/VA range are now being joined by new IP converged, greener products that will take up the mantel at the forefront of industry. EN54-16 has now passed into law and ASL has worked with LPCB to ensure the most rigorous compliance to the new standards. The arrival of the standards and the need to ensure that the product range meets industry s demands for the next ten years means that ASL s market approach is evolving. Until now, ASL has been carefully linked to the projects where equipment has been used, but is now looking to supply through a wider range of partners who are integrators and installers with ASL standing behind them as manufacturer. UP TO 48 x 48 ROUTING MATRIX OVERVIEW VIPEDIA-12 provides audio routing between 14 inputs and 14 outputs. Two of the inputs and two outputs are available via IP and can be used to integrate the matrix into larger distributed systems connected over Ethernet. The router is compatible with audio in ASL s PMC audio format from any of ASL s IP enabled microphones (MPS-IP), ivencs control systems, other VIPEDIA routers. Up to four VIPEDIA-12 routers can be locally linked within a rack to provide routing from any or all of their inputs to their outputs in a single logical 48 by 48 matrix. VIPEDIA-12 integrates seamlessly with ASL V400, X400, 100V Amplifier Mainframes, providing full system status monitoring and fault reporting. This includes the monitoring and control of up to 64 amplifier mainframes (V400 and X400) and their associated amplifier interface card/surveillance units. Audio inputs are connected via standard RJ45 connections to ASL MPS and EMS microphones (0dB + RS485). Two audio inputs support router hardware bypass ensuring continued all-call microphone operation even if the matrix DSP or CPU has failed. DSP based 24 bit / 48kHz audio functions including dynamic input processing, individually adjustable digital output delay and parametric equalisation. The unit includes 12 GPIO inputs (configurable as analogue or digital) 12 digital outputs and two relay outputs. GPIO can be expanded using ASL s BMB01 if required. ANS ambient noise sensors connect directly via analogue contact inputs. Dynamic DANS Noise sensors interface via analogue audio inputs. The Vipedia-12 is equipped with a low power consumption mode to reduce its consumption to a minimum in case of standby mode on batteries. IP Networking The VIPEDIA-12 can be IP networked to provide a large audio matrix across a large site, or across a region or country. This functionality is available in the base product, with two channels of ASL PMC IP Audio I/O, suitable for use with a single control centre, or in long line PA applications. The multiple IP connectivity of the VIPEDIA-12 also enables these networks to have dual redundant connections. DVAs (Digital Voice Announcements) Up to 64 monitored DVAs are provided (max 10 minutes). A micro-sd card will provide virtually unlimited non-monitored message storage. Up to two messages can be played simultaneously. Those messages can be triggered from the MPS or EMS microphones, the Alarm input contacts or the internal scheduler. 4 5 MICROPHONES Each Vipedia input is supporting ASL MPS and EMS paging microphones (0db + RS485). Additionally, the MPS and EMS can be cascaded (up to 6 per Vipedia input). One tone, two tones, three tones chimes are available. Furthermore, custom chimes (WAV) can be downloaded onto the micro-sd card. The following functionalities will be available from the MPS/EMS microphones : Zone/Group live and DVA paging, Music selection routing and level control, EN54-16 status. In addition to audio routing these units provide full system control and fault reporting functions for ASL s rack mount Intellevac Voice Alarm systems. This includes the monitoring and control of up to 64 amplifier mainframes (V400 and X400) and their associated amplifier interface card/surveillance units. The VAR routers provide digital storage for pre-recorded DVA messages, audio outputs, and universal mic/line inputs. Each input can be used with an ASL multi-zone paging microphone (DMS, MPS), Fire Microphone (FMS, EMS), Station Announcement Point, or other source. All-call or zoneable Fire Microphones may be connected to inputs 1 & 2. These act as allcall failsafe override microphones in the event of processor failure, as required by BS5839 Pt 8. Fire alarm interfacing is built in, as are numerous routing and general control inputs. A serial control port enables interfacing to advanced DVA or site control systems, and gives the router the ability to be remotely monitored and configured. There are many other built in functions which are accessible via the front panel LCD display or the PC based Router Configuration Tool. The router has a front panel display and control interface for commissioning the system, fault monitoring, diagnostics and audio monitoring. Access to all configurations settings is controlled by 4 digit PIN code. This mainframe can house any of the following four combinations of amplifier modules: 4 x 100 W (M100), 2 x 200 W (M200), 1 x 400 W (M400), or 2 x 100 W + 1 x 200 W. Amplifier modules are inserted from the front of the mainframe and are protected by a front panel chosen to suit the configuration of amplifier types. Interface cards (which may also serve line surveillance and standby amplifier switchover functions) are inserted from the rear of the mainframe to connect to the amplifier modules. The mainframe is designed to operate with dual power supplies: 230 V AC mains supply and 24 V DC battery supply. The full 400 W power is available right down to 21 V battery supply voltage. The amplifier modules will deliver their nominal power to a 100 V loudspeaker line, even with the Amplifier Mainframe s 230 V mains supply absent and right down to a 21 V battery supply voltage. The unique design negates the need to sleep the amplifiers when in quiescent state. This improves efficiency and reduces heat dissipation. ASL amplifiers are specified to deliver their rated power at the lowest battery voltage (21 V). However, on 230 V mains power they can produce full output, with normal programme material, into loads 25% greater than those specified. In these conditions a fully populated V400 can deliver full output with 500 W of load connected. Through the SSINT module, the V400 has provision for connection of an external standby amplifier; alternatively one of its own amplifiers may be assigned as the standby. The V400 connects to the ASL VAR series of Audio Routers for configuration and fault reporting using ASL s Audio-CAN Network. Both V400s and X400s may co-exist on the network. Up to 63 V400 and/or X400 mainframes can be connected to the Audio-CAN Network. The mainframe is designed to operate with dual power supplies: 230 V AC mains supply and 24 V DC battery supply. Amplification is provided by high efficiency and low quiescent current modular amplifiers using ASL proprietary Adaptive Class D technology. The X400 can be fitted with the ASL MX series 100 V PA/VA amplifier modules in any of the following combinations: 4 x 100 W, 2 x 200 W, 1 x 400 W, or 1 x 200 W + 2 x 100 W. Loudspeaker line monitoring is provided using AC, Impedance or DC surveillance. ASL amplifiers are specified to deliver their rated power at the lowest battery voltage (21 V). However, on 230 V mains power they can produce full output, with normal programme material, into loads 25% greater than those specified. In these conditions a fully populated X400 can deliver full output with 500 W of load connected. The X400 is designed specifically to meet the requirements of applications that restricts the number of loudspeakers that may be connected to any given speaker circuit. To meet this requirement, the X400 features 16 relay isolated outputs to enable multiple small speaker runs to be fed from single amplifiers. In the event of short circuit the surveillance system identifies and isolates the faulty circuit, which enables the other circuits fed by the same amplifier to operate unaffected. The X400 is fully configurable in terms of the mapping of the amplifiers to the outputs. For example 4 amplifiers may be fitted, each feeding 4 outputs. Alternatively a single amplifier may be fitted feeding up to 16 outputs. This enables very cost-effective solutions to be provided for multi-circuit applications. The X400 has provision for connection of an external standby amplifier; alternatively one of its own amplifiers may be assigned as the standby. The X400 connects to the ASL VAR series of Audio Routers for configuration and fault reporting using ASL s Audio-CAN Network. Both X400s and V400s may co-exist on the network. The battery pack provides 65 AH ( BPC65) and 130AH (BPC130) of battery capacity, with a 3.25A (BPC65) and 6.5A (BPC130) recharge rate from the built-in charger unit, and with the charge voltage being temperature compensated to maximise battery life. The BPC65 and BPC130 are designed to comply with EN 54-16, ISO and BS , and are fully monitored to the requirements of EN 54-4 and BS , including monitoring for a high battery resistance in order to predict that the batteries are approaching their end of life. The fault indication is via LED indicators and a change-over relay fault output. The BPC65 comprises one charger tray, and one battery tray with two 12V batteries, and requires 8U of rack space. The unit is designed to fit into racks with 600 mm or 800 mm depth, with an appropriate battery tray being selected for the rack type which is being used. The BPC130 comprises one charger tray, and either one or two battery trays with four 6V batteries. For racks with 800 mm depth, it uses one charger tray and requires 8U of rack space. For racks with 600 mm depth, it uses two battery trays and requires 13U of rack space. The DC power outputs are connected to or disconnected from the attached systems by Miniature Circuit Breakers, with these being provided at the rear of the charger tray. As standard, eight 25A breakers and two 3A breakers are provided. The 25A outputs are normally used for connecting ASL Amplifier Mainframes while the 3A outputs are used with low current 24V DC powered equipment such as the ASL Voice Alarm Routers. Various BDIST battery power distribution cable assemblies are available from ASL for connecting the BPCs to the powered equipment. The BPCs are normally powered from an ASL MDIST Mains Distribution system. The MDIST comprises a 32A 230V distribution block and a number of 10A IEC320-IEC320 leads. These units contain all audio processing, amplification and battery back up elements needed to provide a fully BS5839 Pt 8 compliant system that is also extremely cost effective, and with amplification being provided by High Efficiency Class D amplifiers. The DAU200 provides 200 W of total power configurable as four zones of 50 W, two zones of 100 W, or one zone of 200 W. The DAU400 provides 400 W of total power configurable as four zones of 100 W, two zones of 200 W, or one zone of 400 W. In four and two zone configurations each zone can be configured as A+B circuit or single circuit. Both units have a 100 W standby amplifier, and use DC monitoring for loudspeaker line surveillance. Each amplifier can be fitted with up to 10 x 10 kω End of Line resistors for spurred speaker circuits. The units may either operate in stand-alone mode, be connected to a local fire alarm panel, or be networked to form a larger distributed Voice Alarm System. A built-in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) audio Router provides equalisation, chimes, and surveillance functions, as well as performing audio routing. All parameters are set digitally. The units include storage for 4 DVA messages, 8 audio outputs, and 8 universal Mic/Line inputs, each of which can be used with an ASL multi-zone Paging Microphone. A ninth audio input is provided for miscellaneous functions such as background music. Inputs 1 & 2 support Fire Microphones, which act as All-Call override in the event of processor failure, as required by BS5839 Pt 8. Four of the eight outputs are connected to the unit s integral amplifiers and the other four outputs may be connected to external expansion amplifier units. Ambient noise sensing, external volume control, and external programme selection functions are available by connecting the ASL range of ambient noise sensors and remote controls. Both the audio and data network rings are tolerant to open and short circuit faults, and operate over MICC or other fire rated cables. The Wall Mount Intellevac ACU can feature dedicated buttons for playing DVA messages, and can have either 20, 40 or 60 zone selection buttons fitted, to work along with a built-in Fireman s microphone. These buttons are protected by a keyswitch to prevent unauthorised operation. All-Call versions or versions with no built-in microphone are available.

7 Wall Mounted PAVA systems IP Enabled Public Address The ACU allows a number of Secondary Audio Control Units (ACS) to be supported. The ACS acts as a secondary control panel,mimicking the ACU s audio broadcast functions. Announcements and DVA messages initiated from the ACU, or any microphone or ACS connected to it, can be broadcast to any zone across the network. The ACU front panel s Status indicators display the emergency message status of the zones across the network. The ACU includes 4 DVA messages, 3 network audio outputs, and 8 universal Mic/Line inputs, each of which can support an ASL multi-zone Paging Microphone or ACS. A ninth audio input is provided for miscellaneous functions such as background music. Inputs 1 & 2 support Fire Microphones, which act as an All-Call override across the whole network in the event of processor failure, as required by BS5839 Pt 8. Fire Alarm Interfaces are built-in, including 6 opto-isolated sounder circuit inputs; a RS485 serial port; and a common fault output relay. On ordering, the opto-isolated inputs can be replaced with 4 non-isolated analogue inputs and 8 digital outputs if required. The units include a built-in, fully monitored, temperature compensated charger, and space for a battery pack, which can be ordered from Application Solutions Limited. A serial control port gives the ACU the ability to be remotely monitored and configured. The ACU also has a front panel display and control interface that provides functions for system commissioning, fault monitoring, and audio monitoring. The Mainframes can be used as self-contained intelligent monitored PA systems, or can be used as part of an IP networked system. Two multifunction audio input and serial I/O ports enable the connection of BMB01 Remote I/O Units and ASL paging microphones, or other audio sources. The BMB01 units in turn enable the connection of ASL Ambient Noise Sensors, and also provide flexible general purpose analogue and digital I/O. The ASL microphones can be configured for live speech paging and for DVA message broadcast locally at the host ipam400, or anywhere else over the IP network. Thus a microphone can broadcast at an adjacent unmanned station in the case of Long Line PA systems. Two extra audio inputs plus four audio outputs are provided by an optional XIO01 Audio I/O module. The optional Acapela Text-to- Speech module can be used in place of or as well as live speech and DVA message recordings if desired. The ipa(m)400 can be remotely controlled using ASL MPS IP microphones, or by an ASL or other compatible third party PA Typical Networked ipam System 12 workstation. The ipa(m)400 connectivity, control, and monitoring functions also enable it to drive RS485 PIS displays, and to be used as a SCADA RTU to monitor and control third party equipment. The ipa(m)400 can be fitted with one or more amplifier modules (MX100, MX200,MX400) in any combination of up to: 4x100W, 2x200W, 1x400W, or 1x200W + 2x100W. Each amplifier feeds four outputs, of A, B, C, and D circuits.. Loudspeaker line monitoring is provided using either AC or DC Line Surveillance. The ipa(m)400 operates with dual power supplies, a 230V AC mains supply and/or a 24V DC supply. 13

Connection to Dual Redundant Routers If the MPS is used with a PA/VA system which has dual redundant A and B audio routers, then both the Router 1 and Router 2 Microphone Ports are used, one connected to each ASL Audio Router. IP Network Connection The built-in Ethernet port enables direct connection to a site s IP Network, and enables the MPS microphone to broadcast to any or all PA zones on that network. The MPS has the capability to stream two channels of audio out to the network and one Listen-In channel of audio in from the network simultaneously, which gives the ability to stream live speech and music or live speech and recorded audio DVAs, to give the same functionality as when using analogue wiring. The PA/ IP network may be confined to a single site, or may be a wide area network linking many sites, such as stations along a railway line or separate buildings across a large complex. 14 The units can be fitted with a usd card to hold user recorded or pre-recorded audio messages, and custom user chimes and can be used to replay these messages over the PA system. A speaker is provided on the underside of the console and this enables preview of the locally stored DVA messages, and also enables remote PA zones to be listened to. All cable entries are under a protective strain relieving cover on the underside of the microphone, and all interconnect cables and the gooseneck microphone are replaceable to simplify maintenance. The LCD display provides remote access to the list of active faults in the PA/VA system, while the EN54 mandated control keys enable navigation through the fault list, and also provide remote fault acceptance and clearance. The microphones have multiple PA/VA system interfaces and can be connected directly to either one or two ASL audio routers, enabling multiple options for system redundancy. The microphones will operate in an All-Call hardware bypass fallback mode even in the event of processor failure within the host Voice Alarm Router. This hardware bypass function also operates across whole facilities when the microphones are used in conjunction with ASL s Intellevac safety audio network. There is also a non- EN54 RJ45 Ethernet IP interface with Power over Ethernet capability for VoIP connections to ASL IP based PA/VA systems. All interconnect cabling and the microphone capsule is continuously monitored for open and short circuits. Top, bottom and rear cable entry points are provided by means of knock-outs in the enclosure, while the field connections are provided by means of a set of terminals on the inside rear panel of the back box. The EMS10, EMS20 and EMS50 are compatible with the whole range of ASL Voice Alarm and Public Address systems, and are designed to comply with EN54-16, ISO and BS An All-Call version is available for applications which require this. The ANS sensor detects ambient noise using its built-in microphone. The detected signal is weighted with a speech-band response for the best system performance, and is then translated to a value of measured ambient noise in dba. This value is used to proportionally adjust the Public Address or Voice Alarm system output gain for the configured output channel or channels. The system is set up for the maximum broadcast volume without the ANS sensor, and the ANS system then reduces the gain from this level when the zone is quiet. Two ambient noise measurement ranges are selectable, depending on the required system volume and expected ambient noise level: High Range from 65 dba to 95 dba, and Low Range from 55 dba to 85 dba. DANS01 Dynamic Ambient Noise Sensor The DANS System employs digital signal processing technology to distinguish the ambient noise from the announcement. This enables adjustments of the broadcast volume level to reflect any variations in ambient noise, even while the announcements are being made. The DANS Sensor uses a built-in microphone to detect the ambient noise, and the DANS System can process ambient noise levels between 55 dba and 95 dba. The ivencs software is fully scalable from simple Public Address control workstations through Long Line PA, Security, and Communication systems, to be equally at home when implemented as a large distributed facility control system controlling dozens of subsystems comprising many tens of thousands of devices. The DVA02 can also operate with ASL VAR Routers and with third party PA systems via ASL VIPA-HOST or VIPET IP interfaces. Fault and status reporting is provided for the PA system, and is also provided for any third party equipment which has its fault or status contact outputs connected to the system. The fault indications are shown on the PA display graphics using various representative symbols, and each alarm is assigned a priority to warn users of severe alarms while still reporting minor alarms. A system alarm summary is shown at the top of every screen, while traditional list-based displays can provide details of the active alarms and the alarm history. 12 Control Software ivencs-pa is a PC-based control system, providing powerful Public Address (PA) and system monitoring functions, all of the DVA02 functions are available, and more. ivencs-pa can be configured with workstation options of single or multiple displays, and with single or redundant workstation PCs, and has options of single, dual, or multiple redundant servers, all customisable to meet the individual installation s requirements. The ivencs-pa GUI can be based around a 2D graphic image of the site, facility, or lone map, or a full Pan, Tilt, Rotate and Zoom enabled 3D display. Combinations of 2D and 3D displays are also available, for instance to show a line map or entire site plan in 2D, plus to have drill down to individual stations or buildings shown as full 3D models. As well as operating as a paging microphone in which the physical microphone buttons and zone indicators are implemented on the 2D or 3D graphic display, and providing a background music routing and Listen In functions, the ivencs-pa system can provide Text to Speech functionality. PA announcements can be made using fixed pre-recorded DVA messages, user recorded messages, Text-to-Speech converted text messages, and fragmented messages which are assembled into complete messages at broadcast time. As well as immediate broadcast functions, DVAs can also be scheduled to be automatically broadcast at intervals, and new DVA and Textto-Speech messages can also be recorded by the user. Customer information Systems are typically used to provide automated audio and visual customer information for transport infrastructure such as rail lines and airports, and ivencs-pa can include a built-in Customer Information System which has display driving capability as well as PA functions. Alternatively ivencs-pa can be integrated with third party CIS systems in order to make automated broadcasts.
