3 of function The ecounit 1 wireless room operating units EY-RU record the room temperature and have buttons for setpoint correction, to select the occupancy mode and the fan speed and up to two freely allocatable buttons. The devices are wireless and communicate via EnOcean wireless protocol. Energy is supplied by the integrated solar cell, meaning that no battery is required. The devices can be operated using wireless interfaces from other manufacturers if they comply with the EnOcean standard. In conjunction with the ecomod580 wireless interface, the devices can be used with ecos 5 room controllers. The bi-directional function means that the room controller can affect the content of the LCD. More information about EnOcean wireless technology and the positioning of the wireless interface and the room operating units is available in the "Project engineering using EnOcean wireless technology" manual ( ). Engineering notes Installation EY-RU room operating units are suitable for various types of mounting. Product data sheet PDS shows the mounting options and the accessory material required. Fitting notes As a general rule, the use of non-sauter frames should be checked in advance. EY-RU room operating units can be extended by 6 pushbutton functions by means of the EY-SU106 switching unit. The EY-SU106 is always connected to an EY-RU via a fourcore cable and can be used only in conjunction with this device. The EY-SU106 switching unit can also be installed at a distance of up to 1 m (total line length) from the EY-RU1. For information on choosing the right location with regard to the radio properties and the power supply from solar energy, please refer to the application notes for the ecomod580 wireless interface with ecounit Connection to ecos 5 The room operating unit exchanges information with the ecomod580 wireless interface (send/receive). The wireless interface is connected to the SLC interface of the ecos 5 via a fourcore cable. The wireless interface must be connected to the ecos 5 while the equipment is dead (no voltage). Up to four ecounit 1 can be assigned to one wireless interface. For more information on the wireless interface, see PDS Minimum illuminance in relation to time Minimum illuminance Light conditions at fitting location 125 lx min. 10 h per day 250 lx min. 5 h per day 500 lx min. 2.5 h per day The minimum illuminance applies to artificial light; daylight may produce better values. The minimum illuminance is sufficient for a maximum of 20 keystrokes per day and a measuring cycle of 180 s (as delivered ex works). Shorter measuring cycles or a greater number of keystrokes require more energy and, therefore, a higher illuminance. For comparison, the Workplace Ordinance requires a minimum illuminance of 500 lx for office workplaces. Recesses in rooms that are not adequately lit throughout the day should be avoided. It is preferable to fit the sensor with the solar panel side facing towards a window, but direct sunlight should be avoided. Direct sunlight would falsify the measured temperature values. The fitting location should also be chosen with the subsequent use of the room in mind, so as to avoid shadows cast by users due to storage areas or movable objects etc. Rooms with insufficient daylight A battery pack can be used as an accessory to provide the power supply for devices in rooms with insufficient daylight. The battery pack is connected via terminals and is stowed on the back of the device. The device has to be configured for battery mode. Alternatively, a second solar panel can be wired in. This is combined with the EY-SU106 switching unit. Summary of functions and button assignment The following data are transmitted from the room operating unit to the wireless interface: Temperature Setpoint adjuster Occupancy function (3-stage: comfort, reduced, lowered) Fan speed (5-speed: AUTO, 0, 1, 2, 3) Switching functions for lights and window blinds. A Send command is issued when the button is pressed and released. Address of the operating unit The room operating unit transmits its data on the basis of the EnOcean standard. Each operating unit has one single and unique address, based on the EnOcean wireless module that is used. This address is stored in the wireless interface during the initial learning process. Power supply and choice of fitting location The power supply is provided from the integrated solar panel; for this purpose, the solar energy is stored in a high-capacity condenser ('super cap'). Operation of this super cap must be started by connecting ports 01 and 02 with the activation plug that is included in delivery. When selecting the fitting location, the following points (especially the light conditions) should be borne in mind: 3/9

4 EY-RU14x with EY-SU106: button assignment Transmission of fan speed ecounit 1 transmits the fan speed as an absolute value to the ecomod580, which sends pulses to the ecos 5 until the ecos feedback equates to the fan speed requested. Transmission of presence mode The procedure is similar to the Transmission of fan speed above. Display functions and communication in general To ensure optimal availability of the ecounit 1 operating unit even under poor light conditions, the display on the ecounit 1 is switched off on completion of a user action. Depending on the transmission parameters that have been set, the actual temperature value will be transmitted at intervals. The display of the ecounit 1 is activated by pressing one of the buttons (1-6). This also synchronises the data between the gateway and the wireless room operating unit. The display shows the current values from the ecos 5. If you press button 3 or 4 or any of the buttons between 7 and 12, the button status is immediately transmitted to the ecos 5 by means of a PTM telegram. Operating the switching unit does not activate the display (in order to save energy). The values for setpoint correction, occupancy mode and fan speed are shown first on the room operating unit via the integrated cyclical circuit, and are then sent to the ecos 5. Data are sent only after a period of approximately 3 s during which no button is pressed. After transmission, the room operating unit synchronises itself with the ecos 5 user programme, which is co-ordinated with the cyclical circuit in the room operating unit. Once the display for occupancy mode or fan speed has been deactivated, normal push-button operation is transmitted by the wireless room operating unit. 5 Uni-directional mode In uni-directional mode, the ecounit 1 can be connected to various third-party receivers (such as heating valves). In this case, the display shows the last data sent by the ecounit 1 to the receiver. It is possible to configure the ecounit 1 to run in uni-directional mode. If the ecounit 1 is operating with an 'alien' receiver (e.g. EYmodulo ecos 4), the temperature display can be either C or F if configured accordingly. The value for the temperature display comes directly from the in-built sensor (and not as feedback from the ecos 5 to the ecounit 1 via ecomod580). Configuration display 1 2 digit 1: Configuration identifier digit 2: Prefixed sign (-) digits 3 and 4: Settings Note ecounit110 does not have a display, so it cannot be re-configured manually. This means, therefore: The ecounit110 works only in bidirectional mode (EEP: ). For ecounit 1, only the default settings (shown below) apply. The set resolution affects the change in value each time a button is pressed as follows: Value = 255/ (2 resolution) 9 Correction value: Calibrate displayed value (Xi); the correction value (with the correct prefixed sign) is added to the measured actual value. The device sends Xi plus the measured correction value. F Version of firmware for room operating units. For a change of occupancy via button 1, the setpoint correction is reset to 0. Bi-directional mode: The range and steps are derived from the entry in the ecos 5 ROOM_UNIT firmware module. Uni-directional mode: range and steps as per configuration identifiers 7 and 8 in the ecounit 1 (see the table, Configuration of ecounit 1). Changing a configuration Step 1 Switch to configuration mode Press button 6 for at least 7 10 s without releasing it; this will trigger a switch to configuration mode. During this time, the display is turned on for approx. 5 s, and then it remains off for 2 5 s before the switch to configuration mode. The first 3 digits are shown (digit 1 = configuration identifier, digits 2 and 3 = set value). Starting from now, button 1 or 6 must be pressed within 10 s, otherwise the device will automatically switch back to operating mode. 2 You can now select the configuration identifier that you want with button 6 = increment and button 1 = decrement; you must press the buttons for more than 1 s to do this. After the highest configuration identifier is reached, the display switches back automatically to identifier 0. If identifier 0 is shown and you switch back to the preceding identifier, the highest identifier is shown. Select a configuration 3 Change the setting You can change the current value with button 6 = increment and button 1 = decrement; to do this, press the buttons briefly, i.e. for less than 1 s. Press button 1 or 6 for more than one second to switch to the next or previous configuration identifier. 4 Save the configuration and exit from configuration mode Press button 1 for approx. 5 s; the previous configuration identifier will now be shown briefly (for approx. 2 s). The display is switched off after this. The data have now been saved and you can release the button. 5 Exit from configuration mode without saving data If no button is pressed for approx. 10 s, the system switches automatically to operating mode (and changed data are not saved). 6/9

7 EnOcean transmission standards ecounit 1 transmits its data in two modes. Press button 1 for at least 5 s and the ecounit 1 will send a learning telegram; this also forces the temperature to be sent immediately. As a general principle, the receiver (e.g. ecomod580) is switched to learning mode first (the learning procedure depends on the receiver used); after this, the operating unit is manually induced to send a learning telegram. If the receiver is not in learning mode, no operating unit can be assigned. If a learning telegram is sent, it will have no effect. General notes on the learning function The snowflake symbol denotes that the learning process was successful. If, the snowflake symbol does not appear after the learn button has been pressed for at least 5 s, it can be assumed that the learning process was unsuccessful. If, in addition to the snowflake, a colon appears in the lower line, this denotes that the learning process has already been carried out successfully on this RU (on either the current or another gateway). Similarly, the learning process was successful when the snowflake and the colon appear. If, during the learning process, the learn button is released before the snowflake (or an error message) appears, the operator must wait until the display has been deleted before pressing the learn button again. Only then can a new learning process be started. If the learning process was unsuccessful, the INFO symbol appears with an error message (Err2 ErrC). If an error message is shown, the learning process must be repeated. 7/9

Postmaster full (no more post boxes possible): maximum number of post boxes has been reached on the postmaster. Cause: Internal error in gateway. Solution: Delete all transmitters and memory locations in the gateway, then 'teach in' the transmitters again. Controller full (no more post boxes possible): maximum number of post boxes has been reached on the controller. Cause: Internal error in gateway. Solution: Delete all transmitters and memory locations in the gateway, then 'teach in' the transmitters again. Radio signal to gateway is too weak. Cause: Outside the radio range, interference prevents communication. Solution: Change the position of the gateway or the transmitter in order to obtain a reliable wireless connection. See also the application notes on ecomod580 wireless interface with ecounit Invalid telegram: The received telegram was faulty, so it was rejected. Cause: Interference prevents reliable communication. Solution: Repeat query press button again. If the problem recurs, remove the source of interference.
