2 The M 2501B Autodaptive Capacitor Control increases the effectiveness of installed distribution system capacitor banks by controlling circuit voltage and reducing system losses due to VAr flow. The control monitors the average voltage at the point of installation, voltage changes caused by capacitor bank switching and the number of switch operations to effect optimum capacitor bank control considering local system conditions. The control s infrared communications feature allows local/monitoring through the M-2501B's infrared port. Also, when equipped with the Beckwith Electric M-2980 CAMP (Capacitor Automated Monitoring and Protection) adapter, the M-2501B provides wireless control, near real time system data, alarms and failure polling of remote capacitor banks to SCADA networks. Control Operation The control makes its switching decisions based on algorithms using time and voltage measurements. Settable, upper and lower voltage limits and fixed voltage setpoint level may also be implemented. The control will not call for a switch operation which would cause the voltage to violate these voltage levels. If the site voltage drifts outside these settings, the control will act through the adaptable nonlinear timers to switch the bank if necessary. The control adapts to system source impedances by responding to small voltage changes near a substation and larger voltage changes near the end of the line. Control Elements Upper and Lower Voltage Levels for monitoring Operational range is 98 to 132 V in increments of 1 V with a 6 V minimum between limits. Operation at voltage levels has a 10 second maximum time delay, subject to a 5 minute reclosing delay. Fixed Voltage Setpoint The fixed voltage setpoint can be set from 98.0 V to V. When enabled, the M-2501B will not adapt to a changing voltage profile, but will switch the capacitor bank around the fixed voltage setpoint, using an adaptive timer. Upper and Lower Voltage Rails Adaptable to ±5 % from the average voltage. Operation at voltage rails has a time delay of 1.0 second, subject to a 5-minute reclosing delay. The Lower Voltage Rail helps to mitigate voltage collapse. Reference Voltage Internally-calculated voltage level adapted from average voltage level which is used for switching decisions, or may have a setpoint between 98 V and 132 V. Desired Number of Operations Seeks to maintain 1 to 2 open and close operations per day based on a weekly average. Open and Close Contact Seal-In Durations 15 seconds. Non-Defeatable Reclosing Delay 5 minutes after an open operation to allow for capacitor discharge. Manual Operation The control may be placed in manual operation one or both of the following ways: 1. User can remove the Lexan cover to access the two manual switches on the front panel of the control. These are the Auto/Manual switch and the Manual Open/Manual Close switch. This allows manual initiation of the open or close function after a 30-second time delay (subject to five minute reclosing delay) by the control's internal microcontroller. When the Auto/Manual switch is in the Manual position, no Automatic operation is possible, and no user setpoints are written. 2. The control may be placed in manual operation mode using either the local infrared communications port, or, if equipped with the M-2980 CAMP Adapter, a wireless command from a SCADA network. This allows manual initiation of the open or close function by M-2941 BecoEye+ Field Communication device or SCADA network command after a 30-second time delay (subject to five minute reclosing delay) by the control's internal microcontroller. An operations counter can be reset in the manual operation mode. A second operations counter is non-resettable. If both modes of manual operation are implemented, the control will not return to Automatic Operation until both are removed. 2

LED Indicators Status LEDs are located on the bottom of the control and are visible from the front of the control. Automatic Mode (Yellow): Illuminated when control is in Automatic mode. Manual Mode (Blue): Illuminated when the control is in Manual mode. Blinks for five minutes after a capacitor bank Open operation has been initiated in the Manual mode. Open (Green): Illuminated when control believes bank is open, and during the 15 seconds when a manual Close operation is in progress. Blinks for 30 seconds before and 15 seconds after a manual Open operation has been initiated. Closed (Red): Illuminated when control believes the bank is closed, and during the 15 seconds that a manual Open operation is in progress. Blinks for 30 seconds before and 15 seconds after a manual Close operation has been initiated. The status LEDs dim automatically in low ambient light conditions. Communications The control communicates using the local infrared data transmission. When paired with the M-2980 CAMP interface module, two-way communications can be established with the control remotely using the DNP 3.0 protocol. The M-2980 is radio/modem configurable with current options including either 900 MHz radio or CDMA cellular modem. All DNP 3.0 capable serial communications devices can be supported in the M-2980 design. Contact Beckwith Electric for specific radio/modem requirements. When interrogated (Blinced), the control uploads status information for display and graphing.
