2 Before Reading This Manual For Your Safety This manual contains important information, required to operate this product safely. Thoroughly review the information in this manual before using this product. Especially note the points under "Safety" in this manual, and only operate this product with a complete understanding of the material provided. This manual should be kept in an easy-to-access location for quick reference when using this product. Data Backup To protect data stored in this product (including basic software (OS) and application software), perform backup and other necessary operations. Note that data protection is not guaranteed when repairs are performed. It is the customer's responsibility to maintain backup copies in advance. 3 PRIMERGY SX650 Storage Blade Hardware Guide Introduction This manual explains the basic usage of the PRIMERGY SX650 Storage Blade (PG-B6ADC1) that will be installed in the PRIMERGY BX600 S3 Blade Server System Unit, and connected to the PRIMERGY BX620 S4 Server Blade. Before using this product, read this manual and related manuals to ensure correct use of this product. Remarks Warning descriptions Various symbols are used throughout this manual. These are provided to emphasize important points for your safety and that of others. The symbols and their meanings are as follows. Be sure to fully understand these before reading this manual. Product failure In the event of heat, smoke, or a strange smell being emitted from this product, immediately turn the Server Blade off and unplug the chassis power cable from the power source, and contact an office listed in the "Contact Information" of the "Start Guide". Using this product without repairing it can cause an electric shock or fire. Do not try to repair this product yourself. If a foreign object (water, pieces of metal, liquid etc.) falls into this product, immediately turn the Server Blade off and unplug the chassis power cable from the power source, and contact an office listed in the "Contact Information" of the "Start Guide". Not doing so may cause an electric shock or fire. Extreme care should be taken in households with young children. Handling this product Do not rebuild this product yourself. Doing so may cause an electric shock or fire. Do not insert or drop anything, such as metals or flammable item, into any openings (air holes etc.) on this product. Doing so may cause a product failure, fire, or electric shock. Do not place metal objects or containers containing water, such as vases, flowerpots, or drinking glasses, on or near this product. Doing so may cause a product failure, fire, or electric shock. Avoid placing this product in locations subject to oil vapors, excessive humidity, direct sunlight, heat, or dust, or having poor ventilation, or in areas where strong magnetic fields are generated. Storage or use of this product in such areas may cause a product failure, fire, or electric shock. Do not pour water into this product. Doing so may cause a product failure, fire, or electric shock. Do not use this product in an area near water such as bath room or shower room. Doing so may cause a product failure, fire, or electric shock. 4 If electrical storms are occurring nearby, unplug the chassis power cable and other cables. Not doing so can cause this product to be damaged by lightning and cause a fire. Do not cover the openings (air holes etc.) on this product. Doing so can cause overheating and fire. Do not place anything heavy on top of this product. Also, do not severely jar this product. Doing so may cause this product to fall and result in injury. Do not place this product on a slanted or unstable surface or in areas subject to severe vibration. Doing so may cause this product to fall and result in injury. Do not store this product without its original packaging. Also, avoid storing this product in locations subject to excessive humidity, direct sunlight, or heat (heating device, etc.). This product is easily affected by static electricity. Be careful to handle this product. Touch a metal part of the chassis to discharge static electricity before using this product. 5

14 Chapter 2 Installation and Connection 2.1 Installation and connection This section explains how to install/remove this product from the chassis, and how to connect it to the Server Blade Installing in the chassis This section explains how to install this product in the chassis. Installing this product can be performed in the same way as the Server Blade. For details, refer to "4.2 Installing Server Blades/Storage Blades" in "PRIMERGY BX600 S3 Blade Server System Unit Hardware Guide". This product can be installed or removed while the chassis main power is on. Use ServerView console V (planned) or later to display this product information. When installing this product in the chassis, install it in the slot to the right of the Server Blade to which it is connected. Not doing so may cause problems, for example the power may not turn on. When adding this product to a pre-installed chassis, a Management Blade firmware or Server Blade BIOS may be required to be updated. For information about combination of firmware and BIOS, refer to the following website to download and update an appropriate firmware or BIOS. If an appropriate firmware or BIOS is not applied, this product may not operate properly. 14

15 PRIMERGY SX650 Storage Blade Hardware Guide Connecting the SAS cable To operate this product, connect to the SAS RAID Ctrl in the Server Blade using the SAS cable. Connecting the SAS cable Turn off the Server Blade to be connected before connecting the SAS cable. 1 Touch a metal part of the chassis to discharge static electricity. 2 Check the SAS cable connection location. Check the locations of the SAS connector on this product, and SAS connector B on SAS RAID Ctrl in the Server Blade. Server Blade This product 4 SAS connector B SAS connector 15

16 Chapter 2 Installation and Connection 3 Insert the SAS cable into the respective SAS connectors on this product and the Server Blade (SAS RAID Ctrl) at the same time. Insert it until it clicks (locked). SAS cable The SAS cable is universal. Removing the SAS cable Turning off the connected Server Blade before removing the SAS cable. 1 Hold the connector levers on both sides of SAS cable with both hands at the same time. The lock is released. 2 Pull out the SAS cable on both sides holding the connector levers at the same time. Connector levers 16

18 Chapter 3 Operation 3.1 Turning this product on/off This section explains how to turn this product on/off Turning on Press the Server Blade power switch to turn this product on. For the procedure for turning the Server Blade on, refer to "3.2 Turning On the Server" in "PRIMERGY BX600 S3 Blade Server System Unit Hardware Guide". This product works in conjunction with Server Blade power operations. Normally, the power of this product and the Server Blade are turned on at the same time. The Server Blade's power may turn on approximately 15 seconds after this product's power turns on. This happens because Sever Blade initialization takes time. This does not mean there is a failure Turning off When shutting down the OS that is running on the Server Blade, this product's power is turned off in conjunction with the Server Blade power. When the Server Blade power cannot be turned off even if the OS is shut down, check that the hard disk access LED does not light up, and press the Server Blade power switch. For the procedure for turning the Server Blade off, refer to "3.3 Turning Off the Server" in "PRIMERGY BX600 S3 Blade Server System Unit Hardware Guide". The power of this product and the Server Blade are turned off at the same time. 18

19 PRIMERGY SX650 Storage Blade Hardware Guide 3.2 Installing the internal hard disk unit Up to five internal hard disk units can be installed in this product. This section explains how to install/remove an internal hard disk unit. When an array system is configured, replacing a faulty internal hard disk unit and adding an internal hard disk unit (hot-plug) can be performed during operation. For details, refer to the manual in the array controller document & tools CD. When installing the internal hard disk unit, do not damage or modify the inner cables or the devices. Doing so may cause a product failure, fire, or electric shock. Before handling the internal hard disk unit, first touch the metal chassis to discharge static electricity. 4 The installation or dismantlement not described in this chapter is out of warranty. Do not remove the internal hard disk unit when the system is operating. Do not touch the surface of the baseboard or soldered area. Hold a baseboard by its edges or the metal plate. Do not handle the internal hard disk unit roughly. Doing so may damage the internal data. - Do not drop or damage the internal hard disk unit. - Do not knock the internal hard disk unit on another internal hard disk unit, or other things. - Avoid the contact of metallic materials with the internal hard disk unit. Do not put anything on the internal hard disk unit. Do not use a cell phone nearby. Do not operate or store this product in the following environments. - Areas near magnets or exposed to magnetic fields - Areas in direct sunlight or near heat sources - Areas that experience extreme temperature and humidity changes - Dusty or humid areas - Areas exposed to shocks or vibration Do not move an internal hard disk unit that has already been installed to another disk bay. When putting an internal hard disk unit on a desk, be careful about the following. - Do not drop or tip the internal hard disk unit when placing it on the desk. - Do not put the internal hard disk unit directly on metallic materials. - Do not put internal hard disk units close to one another. - Do not pile the internal hard disk unit on top of one another. - Do not stand the internal hard disk unit on its side. 19

Make sure to install a dummy unit to restrict cold airflow in disk bays where internal hard disk units are not installed. Installation order Install internal hard disk units in numeric order starting from Bay 0. 21 PRIMERGY SX650 Storage Blade Hardware Guide Installation procedure The installation procedure for internal hard disk units is as follows. 1 Touch a metal part of the chassis to discharge static electricity. 2 Remove the dummy unit. Dummy units are installed in the bays where internal hard disk units are not installed. 1. Press the tab on the bottom of the dummy unit up. 2. Pull the dummy unit forward slowly and out. Keep the removed dummy units in the safe place. (2) Tab (1) 4 3 Install the internal hard disk unit. 1. Insert the unit fully into the disk bay with the internal hard disk unit cover opened. 2. 22 Chapter 3 Operation Removal procedure The removal procedure for internal hard disk units is as follows. 1 Touch a metal part of the chassis to discharge static electricity. 2 Remove the internal hard disk unit. 1. Open the cover while pressing the tab. 2. Pull the internal hard disk unit out. Pull the unit out with both hands. (1) Tab (2) 3 Install a new internal hard disk unit or dummy unit. 24 Chapter 4 Operation and Maintenance 4.1 Troubleshooting If you think there may be a failure when operating, confirm the status of this product by referring to "4.1.1 Points to be checked" ( p.24), and contact your maintenance engineer. " This product has an error." ( p.24) " The power source of this product is cut." ( p.24) " This product is not turned on." ( p.25) " The hard disk access LED is not turned on." ( p.25) " The hard disk status LED lights up amber." ( p.25) " An error message about this product is displayed in the server." ( p.25) " The disk is not recognized by the server." ( p.25) Points to be checked This product has an error. Pull the chassis power plug out of the power supply outlet when this product is in the following state as compared with usual operation, and contact your maintenance engineer. Over heating Emitting a strange smell Smoking Emitting strange noises Shaking unusually The power source of this product is cut. Check the following. If you cannot solve the problem, leave this product as is and contact your maintenance engineer. Is the chassis power cable connected to the outlet properly? Is there an outside power disruption, blackout, etc.? Was there recently an outside power disruption, blackout, etc.? 24

25 PRIMERGY SX650 Storage Blade Hardware Guide This product is not turned on. Check the following. If you cannot solve the problem, leave this product as is and contact your maintenance engineer. Is this product securely installed in the chassis server blade slot? Is this product installed in the correct server blade slot location? Is the chassis main power on? Is the chassis power cable connected properly? Is there an outside power disruption, blackout, etc.? The hard disk access LED is not turned on. This product may fail. Contact your maintenance engineer. The hard disk status LED lights up amber. A hard disk unit error may be detected. Leave this product as is and contact your maintenance engineer. An error message about this product is displayed in the server. Although you can use this product within a scope which does not affect operation, leave this product as is and contact your maintenance engineer to check the cause of the error message. The disk is not recognized by the server. Check the following. If you cannot solve the problem, leave this product as is and contact your maintenance engineer. Is the SAS cable connected properly? Is the hard disk unit installed securely? 4 25
