2 Limit switches Limit switches are optional available for some types of our dial thermometers and pressure gauges with nominal sizes 100 and 160 mm. They are opening or closing connected electric circuits at the preset limits. Measuring instruments with limit switches are factory-supplied as a complete unit. The application and function of our limit switches are explained in this catalogue. Detailed information is provided on the selection, switching functions and minimum measuring spans, operating conditions, technical data and options. Limit switches close or open electrical circuits. Using a removable key, the reference pointer is set to the value at which the switching procedure is to be carried out. The actual value pointer can continue working beyond the reference point pointer following a successful limit signal output. The reference value pointers can be adjusted across the entire scale range. The specifications of DIN (pressure gauges) and DIN (thermometers) apply to limit switches with 1 and 2 contacts. We also provide limit switches with 3 or 4 contacts. Special adjustments are required here with regard to setting ranges, switching hysteresis and the possibility of the pointers overlapping. 3 Setting ranges of the limit switches The standards DIN (pressure gauges) and DIN (thermometers) apply in conjunction with the equipment standards DIN EN 831-1/-3 (pressure gauges) and DIN EN (thermometers). As pressure gauges/thermometers with limit switches are subject to other forces, the range within which limit switches should ideally operate and are factory adjusted, is specified as follows in accordance with the standards: Limit switches with 1 contact Setting ranges: S / E / I contact % M contact % Limit switches with 2 contacts Setting range S / E / I contacts both contacts: % Limit switches with 2 contacts Setting range M - contacts 1. contact: % 2. contact: % Outside of the specified ranges, larger switching accuracies and a larger or smaller switching pressure reversal span should be expected, amongst other things. Magnetic contacts are especially problematic, because any reduction of the magnetic forces during adjustment, for example, would make the specified maximum contact load no longer able to be fully exploited. 4 Direct limit switches With standard contact Type S The device for signalling in the version with standard contacts consists of the adjustable reference value pointer, connected with the carrier arm that carries a contact pin and the contact arm that is moved by the actual value pointer, on which the second contact pin is situated. If the actual value pointer and the reference value pointer are on top of each other, then the switching procedure occurs. The contact pins touch or are separated. The torque which acts on the actual value pointer is low, so that the contacts switch exactly to the set reference value. Standard contacts are suitable for: Vibrationless attachment and applications without pulsations, since otherwise unintentional switches may occur. Non-aggressive atmospheres, so that the contact surfaces do not pollute or oxydise. Devices without filled case Use of relays Pulse-controlled multifunction relays from the MSR series Ensure increased switching reliability and enable a higher switching frequency, which can be negatively affected by external influences such as aggressive atmospheres, pollution or oxidation of the contact surfaces. Reduce the contact load Reduce unintentional switching operations caused by vibration / pulsation due to an integrated dropout delay of 450 ms. 6 With magnetic contact Type M Limit switches with magnetic contacts have a screwable permanent magnet attached to the carrier arm of the reference value pointer; locking varnish is applied to the permanent magnet. This increases the contact pressure and also protects the contacts against burning as a result of electric arc effects. The magnet accelerates contact making and delays contact separation. Depending on the directional force of the measuring element and the set magnetic force, the characteristic can be 2 to 5 % of the measuring range. Magnetic contacts can be used almost everywhere as they are largely insensitive to vibrations. Switching reliability, switching capacity and contact load are considerably higher than with standard contacts. 8 Indirect limit switches With electronic contact Type E The signalling arrangement of limit switches with electronic contact consists of contain a proximity switch with integrated switching amplifiers (PNP output) and a control lug. The proximity switch is attached to a carrier arm, which is connected to the reference value. The control lug is moved by the actual value pointer. When the control lug enters the proximity switch, the circuit is closed. When the control flag leaves the proximity switch, the circuit is opened. Switching takes place when the control lug is located in the centre of the proximity switch. The torque acting on the actual value pointer with the control lug is low, so that switching takes place precisely at the set reference value. Electronic contact are suitable for industrial use. Less sensitive for unintentional switching operations due to vibrations / pulsation. Wear and corrosion-free (all electrical components are encapsulated watertight in casting resin in a plastic housing). PLC, opto-couplers or other electronic evaluation units with low voltages and currents can be directly controlled as the proximity switch is a 3-wire type with PNP switching input. 10 With inductive contact Type I The version with inductive sensors consists of a proximity switch (displacement sensor according to DIN EN (NAMUR), a control lug and MSR-I series multifunction relay (use in locations not subject to explosion hazards). Multifunction relays are not included in the scope of delivery of a device with inductive contacts. The displacement sensor is attached to a carrier arm, which is connected to the reference value pointer. The control lug is moved by the actual value pointer. In principle, the proximity switch is a transistor-oscillator whose moving coils are arranged to both sides of the proximity switch. Switching takes place precisely at the set reference value as the torque acting on the actual value pointer is low. Inductive sensors in combination with our MSR-I series multifunction relays are suitable for every industrial use. Wear and corrosion-free (all electrical components are encapsulated watertight in casting resin in a plastic housing). 12 Multifunction relays For limit switches with standard and magnetic contact or inductive contact Our multifunction relays for mechanical contacts enable virtually load-free contact switching due to pulsed control signals with a mark-to-space ratio of 1:100. In addition, they allow barrier layers to be overcome due to pulse voltages up to 40 V with a rate of rise of typically 120 V/μs. Using a dropout delay of typically 0.4 seconds (changes possible on request), uncontrollable erroneous switching caused by bounces or other vibrations is reduced. In addition, the use of our multifunction relays enables a higher switching capacity of the contact thanks to a downstream relay with floating changeover contact. Inductive sensors are suitable for industrial uses. They switch contactless, have a high switching accuracy and a long service life. For this reason, they are increasingly used in industrial plants for which explosive protection or Ex zone 2 is not required. We can provide cost-effective MSR-I relays, as expensive PTB-approved isolating amplifiers are unnecessary for this application. 360

13 Requirements Multifunction relays are built-in devices for use in closed electrical operating areas. Only electrically qualified or skilled persons may carry out installation. Defects resulting improper handling are not covered by the warranty. Multifunction relays comply with the following requirements: EN Electrical safety The following versions are available MSR 010 Monostable version for connection of a single contact: limit switch types S-1 / M-1 or S-2 / M-2. 14 Multifunction relays For contacts with standard and magnetic contact Type MSR 020 The MSR 010 series is suitable for the connection of single contacts and the MSR 020 series for the connection of a double or two single contacts. Contact protection relays increase the switching reliability and capacity of electromechanical limit switches and reduce the contact load. Unintentional switching operations caused by vibrations or contact bounce of slow-action contacts are significantly reduced by a dropout delay. Multifunction relays are recommended for use in oils. Connection example for MSR 010 (Fig. 1) The multifunction relay is supplied with voltage via terminals A1 and A2. On connection of supply voltage (the connected limit switch is not actuated, contact 1-4 open), the floating changeover contact of the MSR relay is in a release state (see type plate). When the limit switch is actuated (contact 1-4 closed), the changeover contacts close. The floating changeover contact of the MSR relay returns to the release state when the supply voltage is interrupted. A control output (terminal 12 or 22) can drive a maximum of 4 control inputs (terminal 13 or 23). The permitted contact resistance is reduced in this case for each signal input to max. 2kΩ (1kΩ for auxiliary power 24 V AC / DC). A bridge between the control outputs is not necessary. If a control output drives the control inputs of several MSR relays, then a uniform reference potential must be ensured. Terminals 82 of the MSR relays must be connected in this case. 363

16 For contacts with inductive contact Type MSR 020-I The MSR 010-I series is suitable for the connection of single inductive contacts and the MSR 020-I series for the connection of double inductive contacts. Both types are suitable for areas in which expensive PTB-approved isolating switching amplifiers are not required. Unintentional switching operations caused by vibration are significantly reduced due to a drop-out delay. Connection example for MSR 010-I (Fig. 1) The multifunction relay is supplied with voltage via terminals A1 and A2. On connection of the supply voltage (the connected sensor is not actuated, proximity switch 1-2 actuated), the floating changeover contact of the MSR-I relay is in a release state (see type plate). When the limit switch is actuated (proximity switch 1-2 not actuated), the changeover contacts close. The floating changeover contact of the MSR-I relay returns to the release state when the supply voltage or proximity switch circuit is interrupted. On connection of supply voltage (the connected limit switch is not actuated, proximity switch 1-2 or 3-4 actuated), the floating changeover contacts I and II of the MSR-I relay are in a release state (see type plate). By activating the limit switch (proximity switch 1-2 or 3-4 not attenuated), the contacts on changer I and II are closed. When the supply voltage or proximity switch circuit is interrupted, the floating changeover contact of the MSR-I relay returns to the release state. 364
