3 INTRODUCTION Motor Control Center for the global market Tundra s Infinity Series MCC offers an efficient and costeffective method of centralizing motor starter units, feeder units, special units and other controls in a floor mounted, free-standing structural assembly containing one or more vertical sections with a common horizontal bus. Through innovation, unique modular design and the latest component and manufacturing technology, Infinity Motor Control Centers meet the high demands and expectations of today s industrial environment. The systems are built and tested to meet or exceed the applicable UL, CSA, and IEC Standards for Motor Control Centers. The Infinity MCC assemblies are UL listed and can be assembled in accordance to IEC all in the same system. Structure with buckets 2

5 Product Features STRUCTURE DESIGN Infinity MCCs are constructed as vertical sections of steel enclosures comprised of horizontal and vertical bus with compartmentalized units and horizontal and vertical wireways. Standard vertical sections are freestanding, front mounted design, 2424 mm high, 576 mm wide and 576 mm deep. 768 mm, 960mm and 1152mm section depth is optional. Each section has 1920 mm of vertical unit compartment space made up of incremental modules each 192mm of various sizes and maximizing the utilization of space. The wireway is a minimum of 192mm wide and can be provided on the right or left side of the section. Section widths of 768 mm, 960mm and 1152mm section width are available as an option. Sections are bolted together to form a single motor control center assembly. Sections connected or installed side by side have side panels providing either single wall or double wall thickness. MAIN HORIZONTAL BUS The main bus provides three phase power distribution from the incoming line or primary disconnect device to each vertical section of the equipment. The horizontal bus can be mounted in the top, bottom or middle of the vertical section. In DC applications, two phase power is provided from the main horizontal bus to the units within the vertical section. Busbars are mounted horizontally in a vertical plane to facilitate connection and splicing. They are braced by polyester molded supports held by steel channels. The edge-to-edge configuration of the bus and the design of the support brace result in an exceptionally strong main bus assembly that can safely withstand mechanical stresses produced by high level short-circuit currents. Standard bus bracing is 50kA rms symmetrical. Optional 80kA and 100kA bracing is available. Continuous current rating selection for the main bus is based on a 65 C rise over 40 C ambient temperature. This meets all UL/CSA/NEMA requirements. Standard isolation of the main bus is achieved with steel plate partition covers on the rear, top and bottom of the sections this is combined with insulated vertical bus barrier for the front. Optionally, fully insulated main horizontal bus is available for enhanced phase-to-phase isolation. Bus coupling plates provide main bus connections between sections. Modification or maintenance work requires that the Motor Control Center be de-energized. Standard main horizontal bus is tin-plated copper with available ratings of 800, 1200, 1600, 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000 and 5000 amperes. Silver plated copper bus is available as an option. 6 VERTICAL BUS Vertical bus distributes three phase power from the main horizontal bus to the units within the vertical section in AC applications. In DC applications two phase power from the main horizontal bus to the units within the vertical section is provided. The vertical bus bars are mounted vertically, one beside the other, directly behind the unit compartments and are braced by polyester molded supports which have the mechanical characteristics required to withstand the stresses produced by high short-circuit currents. The bus supports offer superior electrical non-tracking properties and are impervious to moisture and adverse atmospheric operating conditions, ensuring suitability in often harsh industrial environments. The exceptional electrical and mechanical properties of the material, combined with the design and profile of the barrier results in a superior level of insulation for the vertical bus system. As an option, rear barriers can be added to provide complete isolation of the vertical bus as an additional safety feature. Stab openings are provided at 192 mm increments to allow for flexibility in drawer unit arrangements. Unused openings are provided with covers that slide into the bus barrier grooves. Continuous current rating selection of the vertical bus is based on a 65 C rise over 40 C ambient temperatures in accordance with NEMA/UL/CSA requirements. Optional automatic shutters ensure automatic covering of stab openings when a drawer unit is removed, providingmaximum protection against accidental contact. The shutter mechanism uncovers openings in the barrier and allows the stabs to engage with the vertical bus. The bus bar shutters are see-through so they allow thermal testing without removing any covers. Standard vertical bus is tin-plated copper with a rating of 400, 600 and 1200 amperes. Silver plated copper is also available. Vertical busbars with additional bracing Bus bracing at 22,000, 50,000 amperes rms symmetrical is standard. 63,000, 85,000 and 100,000 amperes are available. The bus barrier extends the full height and width of the vertical bus and horizontal bus. This provides isolation and insulation of the vertical bus from the unit compartments. 7 HORIZONTAL NEUTRAL BUS Half or fully rated Horizontal neutral bus for 3 phase 4 wire systems is provided. The neutral bus is mounted above or next to the main horizontal bus. Horizontal neutral bus is a tin-plated copper material with ratings of up to 5000 Amps. The option for silver-plated copper bus is also available. VERTICAL NEUTRAL BUS Vertical neutral bus for 3 phase 4 wire systems is provided. The vertical neutral bus is mounted on the left slot of the vertical bus holder. Standard vertical neutral bus is a tin-plated copper material with ratings up to 400 Amps. Silver-plated copper bus with ratings between 600 and 1200 Amps are also available options. HORIZONTAL GROUND BUS Horizontal ground bus is mounted on brackets on the bottom horizontal wireway and runs through the length of the MCC. As an option, the horizontal ground bus can be mounted in the top horizontal wireway. The ground bus is provided complete with drillings/terminals and hardware to meet CSA/UL requirements. Standard horizontal ground bus is tin-plated. As an option, silver-plated copper bus is also available. GROUND BUS IN VERTICAL WIREWAY Vertical ground bus mounted in the vertical wireway and connected to the horizontal ground bus is optionally available. HORIZONTAL WIREWAYS The horizontal wireways extend to the 50% depth and full width of each section. They are oversized at 192mm high on the top and 192 mm high at the bottom. Wireways provide unrestricted space for the wiring, conduit entrance, and location of master terminal blocks and ground bus. Removable covers on the front openings of the horizontal wireways provide increased accessibility. VERTICAL WIREWAYS Located on the right or left side of each standard section is the vertical wireway. The wireway is 192 mm wide, 576 mm deep and 1920 mm high. Wireways can also be provided at 384 mm, 576 mm or 768 mm in width. The vertical wireway door is not interlocked with other doors or devices, and can be opened at any time. If a bottom unit compartment requires a full width door, a shorter vertical wireway door is provided for the remaining section compartments. Metal walls isolate the vertical wireway completely from the unit compartments and bus bar chamber. Wire harness supports are provided in the vertical wireway for anchoring cables. 6

8 STANDARD REMOVABLE UNIT DESIGN The standard removable drawer unit consists of a mounting plate with line power connecting bus stabs fixed at the rear and top and bottom frames bolted to the mountingplate. Located at the front of the drawer are the unit handles, fixing lever and mechanical interlocking device for the unit disconnect. The bottom frame is used for units of three modules. Unit heights come in multiples of 192 mm (7.55 inch) increments. The unit partition plate provides a steel isolation barrier between units and/or unused spaces. The partition plate is installed by hooking it to the center channel and by locking it to the vertical wireway panel corresponding to any of the 192 mm (7.55 inch) incremental unit modules. UNIT HANDLES AND LATCHING The drawer handle and latches are designed to allow convenient and safe removal and handling of large or heavy drawer units. This facilitates easy insertion and withdrawal of the unit. The handles and latches ensure the drawer unit in the compartment is latched securely and ensures positive mechanical engagement and disengagement of bus stabs with the vertical bus. As the removable drawer unit is inserted into the compartment, its latching handles engage with the front flange of the partition plate directly above the drawer unit. As the handles are rotated toward the inside and screwed on the connection to the bus bar will be made. To withdraw the removable unit from the compartment, the lever is rotated outwards, positively disengaging the bus stabs from the bus (phases first, neutral second and ground last). UNIT MOUNTING PLATE UNIT PARTITION PLATE Removable Unit with Feeder Breaker To provide isolation and safety, the unit compartment is completely enclosed on all sides. This is achieved by supplying partition plates on the top and bottom drawer mounting plates, and bus barrier at the rear. This reduces the possibility of short-circuit induced arc and gases from spreading to adjacent compartments or bus systems. The drawer unit mounting plate provides the mounting base for the electrical components and bus stab assembly. Units of 19 or more modules and units containing special device or control assemblies are mounted on fixed mounting plates with support brackets bolted to the center channels of the structure. Fixed mount units are bolted with cable connected to the bus bars. If a section has a combination of drawer and fixed mount units, the drawer units are normally located in the top part of the section while fixed mount units are mounted below the drawer units. 7

9 DRAWER BUS STABS The drawer bus stab is made up of dual, self-aligning, silver copper alloy contacts mounted in a glass reinforced polyamide insulation housing. The drawer bus stab design incorporates mechanical simplicity, achieving precise control of contact pressure and alignment with the vertical bus. Drawer Bus Stabs Two different drawer bus stab sizes are available - 160A and 250A. Drawer unit line power cables are machine-crimped directly onto the bus stab contacts and insulated to eliminate any possibility of potential arc fault in this area. DOORS Doors are formed of industrial guage steel with a flange-edge on all four sides to provide rigidity. NEMA type 1 sections are provided with gasket doors as a standard. Full gasket sections are available for NEMA 12. Doors can be swung open to 120 degrees, allowing optimum access to the compartments. Door hinges are screw type. Doors are removed by simply loosening hinge screws (step 1), pulling the door and hinge forward (step 2), and lifting off the door (step 3). Removal or re-installation of doors does not require removal of other vertical section doors. The door latch is a quarter-turn indicating type limited to 90 degree rotation. It provides safe, reliable and positive action in closing and opening the door. This latch also holds the door closed in the event of high level short-circuit faults and against explosive expansion of gases inside the unit compartment. 10 WIRING AND TERMINATION The vertical wireway design features a rectangular twist knockout and two round knockouts spaced at 75 mm (2.95 inch) modular height increments. This provides flexibility and ample access to control and power wiring and termination. The unit load and control terminals are located at the right side of the unit adjacent to the wireway. This configuration not only facilitates easy field connection of control and power wires but also eliminates the need for pulling wires into the unit. As a result, greater accessibility is provided to components within the unit. The location of the terminal block plug allows equal convenience in field and unit wiring and termination. Two ten pole terminal blocks, for a maximum of twenty terminals, are available for each incremental 75 mm (2.95 inch) module of the section. Standard control wiring within each unit and connection to the terminal blocks is made with 16 AWG (14 AWG optional) stranded thermoplastic insulated 105 C rated wire, red for AC, green for ground and blue for DC control wiring. 11 UNIT GROUNDING Safe and reliable grounding of the drawer unit is achieved through innovative embossing provided along the entire length of unit top frame. This establishes continuous surface contact with the plated drawer guides. Ground connection is made instantly when the drawer unit is placed on the guide rails. Additional safety is provided with door mounted devices and by the optional grounding wire connection between the door s welded hinge and section side wall. This reliable and effective grounding system eliminates the need for an additional separate vertical ground bus in the MCC and ground stab in the drawer assembly. MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER, FUSIBLE DISCONNECT SWITCHES The Motor Control Center is equipped with either an externally operated main circuit breaker or a main fusible disconnect switch. Thermal magnetic circuit breakers or fuses provide the main overcurrent protection for the bus structure and back up protection for the starter and feeder units. The devices must be selected to ensure that their interrupting capacity is equal to or greater than the maximum available short-circuit. INCOMING LINE ENTRIES Incoming line entries available include: Main Cable Entry Lugs Bus Duct Connection Facilities Main Circuit Breakers Main Fusible Disconnect Switches Service Entrance Connection Facilities with optional metering section and ground fault protection systems. Incoming line entries may be selected from the Unit Ratings and Space Requirements. Details include the following: Type of incoming entries Voltage/current ratings Interrupting ratings Size and number of incoming conductors Type of fusing (where applicable) Unit compartment size SERVICE ENTRANCE MAIN UNITS Service entrance connection facilities in the Motor Control Center are furnished with UL listed / CSA certified circuit breakers or fusible disconnect switches and provide integrated disconnection and overcurrent protection to all ungrounded service conductors. These facilities also provide a means for grounding the neutral conductor when required. 10

12 CABLE/BUS DUCT ENTRIES Motor Control Center is not equipped with a main circuit breaker or a main fusible disconnect switch. The incoming line connection to the main horizontal bus is provided by means of cable entry lugs or bus duct. Both top and bottom cable entries can be provided. For Motor Control Centers with cable or bus duct entry, protection for the bus structure must be provided at the switchgear feeding power to the Motor Control Center or Dead Front Switchgear. MAIN METERING AND GROUND FAULT PROTECTION Line side current transformers can be provided in the incoming line entry compartment for use with switchboard meters. A ground fault detection system can be provided in the main circuit breaker unit to provide ground fault protection for the entire Motor Control Center. Ground fault protectors detect low level arcing ground fault currents and provides trip command to the main circuit breaker. This interrupts the fault and protects the equipment. MOTOR STARTER UNITS Motor starter units are either self-protected combination motor controllers or conventional combination starters employing contactors, overload relays and disconnectdevices. The disconnect device can be either a circuit breaker, circuit interrupter, fusible switch or self protected combination motor controller disconnect. Selection of motor starter units one size according to the maximum available short-circuit capacity at the Motor Control Center location. COMBINATION MOTOR STARTERS Typical combination motor starter units available include the following: Full voltage, Non-reversing. FVNR Full voltage, Reversing. FVR Full voltage, Non-reversing Two-speed single winding. FVNR-2S1W Full voltage, Non-reversing Two-speed two winding. FVNR-2S2W Reduced voltage, Autotransformer, closed transition. RVAT-CT Reduced voltages, Delta-Wye, open or closed transition. RVAT OT/CT Reduced voltage, Part winding. RV-PW Other special combination starters available upon request. 11

13 FEEDER-TAP UNITS Feeder-tap units are equipped with either circuit breakers or disconnects (fusible or non fusible). Thermal magnetic circuit breakers or fuses provide overcurrent protection for the loads and the cables. Circuit breaker trip and the fuse ratings are based on the feeder circuit s continuous rating in accordance with the NEC/CEC. The interrupting capacity must also be equal to or greater than the maximum available fault current. Unit Ratings and Space Requirements Table (available request from Tundra ) shows the sizes of the units by continuous current ratings, shortcircuit withstand rating, type of construction and unit space required. SPECIAL UNIT DESIGN The Infinity Motor Control Center can be equipped with many other types of controls for motors or other equipment needed in the industrial, commercial or utilities sectors. Available equipment also includes programmable logic controllers, variable frequency drives, solid-state soft starters, distribution transformers and lighting panelboards. VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVES UNITS Variable Frequency Drives can be installed in Motor Control Centers. They can be equipped with fusible disconnects or circuit breakers to provide circuit protection and disconnect functions. Drives can be provided with a number of options including inline and bypass contactors, DC injection braking and line and load reactors. 14 SOLID-STATE SOFT STARTER UNITS Solid-state soft starters can be installed in the Infinity Motor Control Center to provide a smooth, controlled acceleration and deceleration of AC motors, and minimizes stress to the driven equipment and electrical system. They can be equipped with either fusible disconnects or circuit breakers to provide overcurrent protection and disconnect functions. Options include in-line and bypass contactors. DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMERS Single phase and three phase transformers, protected on their primary sides by separate feeder units, can be installed in the Infinity motor control centers. These units are fixed mounted at the bottom of the section.
