1 Rugged ATR Pluggable Canister RAID Data Storage Delivers Continuous Data Recording for ISR Swap 19.2 TB from plane to ground station in 2 minutes Continuous Data Recording Requirements Military Intelligence, Reconnaissance and Surveillance (ISR) applications generate a lot of non-stop and irreplaceable data from sensors, cameras and video feeds - and at high speed. Whether the data is radar, thermal imaging, video or photographs, all the data must be captured in real time without missing a beat. This demanding requirement, where the data storage unit can assure military personnel of constant high speed with virtually no variation is known today as, Continuous Data Recording. At mission completion, the recorded data needs to be quickly and safely moved from the vehicle to a ground station for analysis. Of course, the unit must be rugged for mobile deployments and meet stringent military standards for vibration, environmental factors plus EMI. For many applications, it must also fit into tight spaces defined by prior generations of equipment and not weigh more. That is the challenge for airborne, marine and mobile ground operations for ISR data recording in harsh environments. RR1P removable canister system enables recorded data to be removed and replaced immediately with a fresh canister in under two minutes. The canister connects to the chassis with a military grade connector designed for 10,000 insertion cycles. Rugged RR1P with Removable Canister The RR1P Rugged RAID with one (1) Pluggable Canister is a ¾ ATR form factor product that meets demanding ISR requirements. Designed to be lightweight, it weighs only 25 pounds including a five pound removable canister with up to 19.2 TB of compact, rugged, high performance mobile data storage with RAID data protection. The RR1P is a Purpose Built disk array designed for standard ATR racks to be mounted with other sophisticated instrumentation. The RR1P is a second generation rugged removable canister product. It follows in the footsteps of the field proven RR2P which offers two removable canisters in a standard 19 rack mount enclosure. Canister holds (24) 1.8 SSDs. Front mounted handle makes insertion, removal and carrying the canister easy. Milled aluminum canister rails slide easily on Delrin base. With this smaller ATR form factor, the RR1P leverages the success of the RR2P capabilities into the smaller size required by ATR applications and cuts 21 pounds from the total weight critical in airborne applications.

2 Constant High Speed for Continuous Data Recording ISR missions demand high speed recording rates and the RR1P delivers up to 2,600 MB per second read speed and 2,200 MB per second write speed using a high speed RAID controller. More importantly, the controller firmware and SSDs have been tuned to provide constant data rates at high speed. Extensive testing has demonstrated constant rates of speed for days on end with typically less than 1% variation in speed per port. Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) Surveillance missions demand small size, low weight and low power despite the need for high speed and high capacity. Size: The RR1P fits into a compact ¾ ATR enclosure measuring 9.0 high x 7.5 wide x deep and deep, including the front door. Weight: The RR1P was designed using 100% aircraft-grade lightweight aluminum, keeping the total weight to just 25 pounds. Power: To get high speed, low weight, small size and low power all at the same time, the RR1P uses 24 SAS or SATA 1.8 SSDs in a sturdy aluminum canister. Despite the large number of SSDs and a powerful disk controller, the RR1P is rated for only 250 Watts and draws typically 185 Watts during actual operation. RAID Data Protection The RR1P is a full RAID system using a COTS RAID controller that supports standard RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 modes and storage virtualization and is fully compliant with most operating systems and hypervisors. Rugged Design Designed for the most demanding environments, the RR1P offers these important features: RR1P shown with door open and canister installed. J-hook thumbscrew secures canister to withstand vibration. RR1P mounts to standard ATR mounting trays. Vibration Tolerance: The RR1P passed extensive independent laboratory vibration testing. It was designed to maximize rigidity and damping characteristics of components and supporting structures and the use of SSDs. The internal support structures were all 3D modeled using sophisticated, time sequenced, finite element analysis software to ensure structural integrity under simulated loads. Extra care was taken to protect the controller board by suspending it within the chassis to avoid long term vibration or torque from damaging any of the components or electrical traces on the board.

3 Front Door: Four heavy duty captive thumbscrews secure the door closed to prevent the canister being ejected in the event of an accident to prevent Foreign Object Damage (FOD) and to protect personnel. Opening the front door automatically triggers a graceful system shutdown that ensures all data is saved. Canister: The RR1P removable canister connector is military grade and sustains 10,000 insertion cycles enough for five years of daily use. The canister measures only 3.75 wide by 4.00 high by deep or deep including the handle. It holds 24 securely retained 1.8 SAS or SATA low-profile SSDs, each in an aluminum slot in an extremely compact volume. Each SSD has capacity to 800 GB each for a total of 19.2 TB per canister. Each canister includes an integral front handle that enables easy insertion and removal. The canister insertion is smooth, guided by aluminum slots on the canister that rides on a Delrin slide. The rear connector on the canister is accurately guided into place using a series of guide pins for precise alignment and secure connector mating. This alignment system ensures high frequency signal integrity during critical operation in a harsh mobile environment. Cooling: The RR1P is forced air cooled by a high performance, low power, low noise fan. The front panel provides all air intake into the enclosure though an EMI honeycomb filter and removable dust filter. Extra care was taken in the design using 3D thermal modeling to ensure proper cooling for this densely packed system. RR1P operates from 0 to 40 C and from sea level to 10,000 feet. Mounting The RR1P fits standard ¾ ATR tray mounting plate with quick-release J-hooks that lock the unit in place. Front Panel and Real Time Status The RR1P was designed to have all access via the front panel since the unit is designed for ATR racks with little or no rear access. The front panel provides four 8 Gb Fibre Channel ports plus Ethernet and RS-232 management ports and a circular military AC power port. There are 12 military grade LED status indicators on the front panel. Four confirm Fibre Channel link connections, four show Fibre Channel port activity and four show RR1P unit status for Power, Busy, Temperature Alarm and Service Alert. Front panel shows circular military power, four Fibre Channel plus RS-232 ports and 12 military grade LED s. Ethernet port is on lower left under protective cover. The RR1P connects to all servers and FPGA systems that support SCSI-2 or SCSI-3 protocol over Fibre Channel 2/4/8 Gb connections. The Orange color is FED-STD- 595, number RR1P products are built to order and other colors are available.

4 Military Standard Design, Manufacturing and Testing RR1P has been designed, built and tested for numerous military standards including MIL-STD- 461F - Electro Magnetic Interference, MIL-STD-810G - Environmental and Vibration and MIL- STD-704A - Aircraft Power and others listed in Appendix A.
