2 VMware vsan Ready Nodes Product Brief - August 31, of 7 VMware vsan Ready Nodes Overview Ready Nodes are Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) appliances based on VMware vsan software-defined storage, vsphere hypervisor and vcenter unified management. This stack runs on x86-based server hardware provided by a number of different vendors. These companies sell the solution as their own HCI appliance products, each certified by VMware. There are well over 100 Ready Node models available from the following vendors in various hybrid and all-flash configurations. See current datasheets from each vendor to determine which Ready Node configurations or profiles they currently support. Cisco Dell Ericsson Fujitsu Intel Inspur Lenovo NEC Highlights 4 Hybrid and 3 Allflash profiles Over a dozen hardware vendors Enables HCI appliance to be sourced from existing hardware vendor Well over 100 models available (all vendors combined) Includes vsan, vsphere, vcenter HP HPE Hitachi Quanta Sugan Supermicro Huawei Evaluator Group Comment: vsan was originally sold as a software-defined storage solution for use in VMware environments, one that required users to select their own hardware and install the software. Ready Nodes are designed to improve the user s experience by creating turnkey HCI appliance products that are purchased and supported by their hardware vendor of choice Evaluator Group, Inc. 3 Product Brief About vsan Like other virtual SAN products, vsan aggregates storage media on each physical host into shared storage pools comprised of disk drives and/or flash drives. Embedded into the hypervisor kernel, vsan allows for more optimization of the data path and simpler management. Designed specifically for vsphere clusters, vsan will scale to the maximum number of nodes that a particular vsphere version supports, currently 64 nodes. vsan has inline deduplication and compression, but is only available with all-flash nodes and at the system level. It also offers single- and double-parity RAID between nodes, commonly known as RAID 5 or 6 but what vsan is calling erasure coding. Since vsan is an integrated part of the hypervisor it leverages the features of vsphere, including High Availability (HA), Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), vmotion, vsphere Snapshots and vsphere Data Protection. Additionally, vsan cooperates with VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) and vrealize Automation for cloud deployments and VMware View for desktop deployments. (For more information, see Evaluator Group Product Brief on VMware vsan.) Ready Node Profile Characteristics Ready Node models come in single-node and multi-node chassis (between one and four nodes), based on the vendor. While hardware vendors offer different combinations of storage, memory and CPU resources, the following list shows the minimum required for each Ready Node profile, in all-flash (AF-) and hybrid (HY-) configurations. All capacities shown are raw. AF-4: 2x10-core CPUs, 128GB RAM, 1x200GB SSD caching tier, 4x1TB SSDs capacity tier AF-6: 2x12-core CPUs, 256GB RAM, 2x200GB SSD caching tier, 8x1TB SSD capacity tier AF-8: 2x12-core CPU, 384GB RAM, 2x400GB SSD caching tier, 12x1TB SSD capacity tier HY-2: 1x6-core CPU, 32GB RAM, 1x200GB SSD caching tier, 2x1TB HDD capacity tier HY-4: 2x8-core CPUs, 128GB RAM, 1x200GB SSD caching tier, 4x1TB HDD capacity tier HY-6: 2x10-core CPUs, 256GB RAM, 2x200GB SSDs caching tier, 8x1TB HDD capacity tier HY-8: 2x12-core CPUs, 384GB RAM, 2x400GB SSDs caching tier, 12x1TB HDDs HCI Acceleration Kit: 3-node cluster of 1-socket servers, for single-site environments 2017 Evaluator Group, Inc. At the low end, the HY-2 configuration has a single 6-core CPU, which can make it cost-effective in the smallest ROBO or departmental environment. At the high end, the HY-8 and AF-8 offer a minimum of dual,12-core CPUs and 12TB of storage. It should be noted, however, that these are minimum and most hardware
5 2 of 7 vendors offer platforms with larger configurations, as high as 20-core CPUs and 20TB of storage per node, based on currently available products. HCI appliances are designed to provide a turnkey compute and storage solution for a range of environments, one that s easy to order (typically a single SKU) and easy to deploy without extensive IT experience (often in an hour or less). First-call support is provided by the hardware vendor. Ready Nodes give companies considering an HCI appliance an extended range of hardware configuration options (with seven hybrid and all-flash profiles) and the ability to pick the hardware vendor of their choice, or one they have an exiting relationship with. It should be noted however, that not all vendors offer the entire range of hybrid and all-flash Ready Node profiles. Also, data reduction is available only with all-flash models and only at the system level. VM-level configuration and management (Storage Policy Based Management) is a feature that can improve data efficiency and manageability, and one that most HCI vendors don t have to this extent. vsan scored well on Evaluator Group s IOmark testing for performance and cost-effectiveness, (using Intel servers), showing that all-flash configurations could actually be more economical on per-vm basis than hybrid configurations. VMware provides cloud connectivity options with Cloud Foundation and the Cross-Cloud Architecture, and while vsan does not provide any other hypervisor options, it does support containers with vsphere Integrated Containers and Photon.
