Plug in both mains and power adaptors for the Scarlett 18i20 /AudioMIDI interface and sound module. Then connect audio and MIDI leads as shown below. Plug the MIDI OUT on the interface to the MIDI in on the sound module so that Logic sends MIDI control data to the MIDI interface which will in turn send it to the sound module. Plug audio leads from output on the sound module to inputs 1+2 on the front of the interface. This will ensure the sound module can be heard and recorded in Logic. Ensure audio leads are plugged into the monitoring outputs on the interface to route the sound to the monitors. USB from the interface to the Mac to transfer digital information from the interface to the software The outputs (L+R) on the Sound Module are connected to inputs (1+2) on the Audio interface so that stereo can be assigned to an audio track in Logic to record the chosen sound on the external sound module. The sound can also be routed through the monitors from the monitoring outputs on the interface. The MIDI Out on the interface to the MIDI In on the sound module, using a MIDI lead, ensures Logic sends MIDI control data to the MIDI interface which will in turn be sent to the sound module.
Once all connections have been made create a project in Logic Pro by clicking New, File and then select Empty Project. Initially set up a software instrument track which the controller keyboard, via USB, will send control data for pitch, duration and velocity. After this, select an instrument from the Library to play/record using the controller keyboard. The next stage is to be able to play and record a sound you want to use on the sound module. First of all though, before creating an external MIDI track, you must ensure Audio is configured correctly in Logic Pro so communication between the software and the interface can take place. For this, in Logic Pro, select Preferences and then Audio.
This will open a further window in which you will need to select the interface (Scarlett 18i20 as both the output and input device. Also select Buffer size as 128. In addition to this the computer itself needs to know the interface is the default input/output device so in the Mac settings, click on System Preferences A further window will appear in which you need to select the Sound icon.
Select the Sound icon as shown below. A further window pops up and again select Scarlett 18i20 as both the Output and Input device. Now you have set the interface as both the Input and Output device in Logic Pro and on the computer itself, the external MIDI track (and audio track to hear/record the external MIDI sound) can be set up.
Click the + in the arrange window to create a new track and select External MIDI. You can see the Output is now reading Scarlett 18i20 has originally set up. Click on the Scarlett 18i20 (output device) and then select channel 1. This is so the output of the external MIDI channel in Logic sends MIDI data to the channel sound on the sound module via the interface. This communicates control data.
Now an audio track needs to be created so the sound module can be both heard and recorded. Again click the + button in the arrange window and select Audio. Ensure input 1+2 is selected (stereo inputs) and output 1+2 also. The sound module audio leads run to inputs 1+2 on the interface and outputs 1+2 route the sound from the interface to the monitors (see 1st page for pictures) For recording external MIDI select the External MIDI track in the arrange window and ensure the Audio track is not yet set to record. The reason is to ensure that only MIDI control data is recorded at this point so it can be edited, such as quantised, before recording the audio. Once audio is recorded it cannot be changed by editing the MIDI control data in the piano roll window.
Once the External MIDI control data is recorded, enable record and input monitoring on the audio track after selecting the audio track. Click record and the audio track will record the external MIDI sound module track. When playing back mute the external MIDI track to ensure the sound module no longer plays.
