2 Unpacking 1. Do not plug the printer in just yet. We ll tell you when you can. 2. Lift the access cover and remove the clear smudge strips from the front panel and cover. Smudge strip Smudge strip Access cover 3. Remove the shipping retainer that secures the print head during shipment. Save it in case you ever need to ship the printer.
3 4. Insert the platen knob in the hole on the right side of the printer, lining up the notch in the knob with the pin on the shaft. Platen knob 5. Make sure the printer is turned off, then plug the printer end of the power cord into the printer and the other end into a 3-hole grounded outlet. Setting the Internal Switches With a serial interface there are three sets of switches, one on the circuit board and the other two on the serial board. Before you take the switch cover off to reset any of these switches, read the overview of their functions and the section entitled resetting switches. The factory/required settings are indicated by bold text.

7 Resetting the Switches You ll need a screwdriver and a fine-tipped tool- a ballpoint pen or a toothpick will do. 1. Make sure that the power is off. 2. Remove the screw from the small cover on the back of the printer and slide off the cover. Switches 3. Using the tool, slide the switch to the new selection. 4. Replace the cover and tighten the screw. When you turn on the printer it will activate your new selections. Installing the Paper Separator 1. Holding the paper separator parallel to the top of the printer, insert the tabs into the slots on the top of the printer. 2. Slide the paper separator towards the back of the printer so that the tabs fit securely in the slots.

Center the print head so that it s away from the bail rollers. Make sure the bail is closed lever back. 3. With the knob side up, tilt the ribbon cartridge onto the print head plate so that it slides into the area of the plate that is closest to the front of the printer. Ribbon shield Printhead Knob Tab
9 4. Lower the ribbon shield over the print head, aligning the tabs with the inserts on the print head plate. 5. Press on the cartridge until you feel it snap into place. Caution: Do not touch the print head directly after printing, allow five minutes for it to cool. Note: To remove the cartridge, slide the print head away from the rollers, grasp the cartridge on both sides and lift off. Ribbon shield Printhead gap lever 6. Replace the access cover unless you haven t put paper in the printer yet. Loading paper Loading sprocket (computer) paper into your printer. The printer can handle up to 4 part forms. Before you load paper, be sure to set the blue print head gap lever (located to the left of the print head) in position 1 for 1-2 part paper, position 2 for 3-4 part paper or position 3 for extra thick paper.
10 Bottom feed 1. Set the printer on a slotted printer stand, aligning the opening in the base of the printer with the slot on the stand. 2. Place the paper under the printer stand. 3. Lift the access cover. 4. Open the paper lever and the bail lever 5. Slide the first sheet of paper through the opening in the base of the printer. 6. Using the platen knob, engage the sprocket holes with the pins. If the pins need adjusting, pull the tabs forward and slide the pins left or right to accommodate the width of the paper. Lock the tabs when the pins are at the proper distance. Note: Do Not stretch the paper. If the sprocket holes stretch or tear the during printing readjust the pins. 11 7. Close the bail, but leave the paper lever open for sprocket paper feeding. 8. Replace the access cover making sure the paper exits through the opening; then lower the wire guide on the paper separator to prevent exiting paper from reentering the printer. Rear Feed 1. Place the paper behind the printer. 2. With the paper separator lying flat on the printer, slide the guides to their widest position. 3. Lift of the access cover. 4. Open the paper lever and the bail lever. 5. Insert the paper in the slot in the paper separator. 6. Continue sliding the paper until it reaches the platen. 7. Using the platen knob, engage the sprocket holes with the pins. If the pins need adjusting, pull the tabs forward and slide the pins left or right to accommodate the width of the paper. Lock the tabs when the pins are at the proper distance. Note: Do Not stretch the paper. If the sprocket holes stretch or tear during printing readjust the pins. 8. Continue advancing the paper until it reaches the front of the platen, behind the bail. 9. Close the bail but leave the paper lever open for sprocket paper. 10. Using the platen knob, advance the to the first line were the printing is to begin. 11. Replace the access cover. Make sure the printed paper exits from the opening in the access cover.
12 12. Lower the wire guide to prevent the exiting paper from reentering the printer. 13. Adjust the guides so that they are as close to the paper as possible without touching it. 13 Using the Front Panel LINE FORM TOF SELECT ALARM POWER PITCH MODE FEED FEED SET 10 NLQ 12 UTILITY 17 HSD The SELECT button controls communications with the computer. Pressing this button turns the SELECT light on and off. When the light is on, the printer is on line (SELECTED) and is ready to receive data. When the light is out, the printer is offline or (DESELECTED) and not ready to receive data from the computer. Note:If the printer is DESELECTED for more than a few minutes the CAT PLUS or CAT BASIC will sound an alarm. Three buttons on the front panel control forms. The LINE FEED button performs one line feed and the FORM FEED button advances the paper to the top margin of the next page. The TOP OF FORM button set the top margin at the current location of the print head and will only work when the printer is offline. (SELECT is off). The red ALARM light will alert you when paper is low or out, or when there is an internal problem with the printer. When the alarm light is on, the printer cannot be selected. The POWER light is on when the printer is plugged in and turned on. These next two buttons control character size and print quality and are functional whether the printer is selected or deselected. The light reflect the current setting of the printer. The PITCH button controls the character size-10,12 or 17 characters per inch (cpi). The light next to the size will indicate which one is selected. The MODE button controls which print quality ia being used-nlq, Utility or HSD. The default settings are 17 cpi and Utility print quality these are also the recommended settings.
