Table 2. Performance and Power Specifications for the 2-Port DS3 ATM Module 20N02 ATM Module 2-Port DS3 Total Amount of SDRAM Module Program and Data Space Maximum Input Buffer * Output Buffer 8MB 3MB 1MB 4MB (65,536) Chassis Speed Low Speed Maximum Power Consumption 15 W * The I/O buffers carry 16,384 cells per megabyte. Indicates the size of the output buffer followed by the maximum number of 64-byte cells in the output buffer. This column relates only to the speed at which the module communicates within the chassis. A high-speed module will communicate at high speed (1.2 Gbps) in a chassis that has a high-speed bus (PSAX 4500 chassis). High-speed modules will communicate at 600 Mbps in any other chassis. Low-speed modules will always communicate at 600 Mbps in any chassis. Module Placement The 2-Port DS3 ATM module is installed in any PSAX chassis slot intended to contain an I/O or server module. If you are installing the module in a newly installed PSAX chassis, be sure to follow your facility site plan for placing this module in the correct location in the chassis. Installing the Module Perform the following procedure to install PSAX I/O modules into a PSAX chassis. Read the PacketStar PSAX Multiservice Media Gateway Safety Guidelines, which accompanies this product, before proceeding. 2-Port DS3 ATM Module Description and Technical Specifications Page 3 of 8
4 ! WARNING: Be sure to use the ejector handles during installation and removal of a PSAX module.! WARNING: Make sure the locking tab at the bottom of the module (looking at module in a vertical position) is UP before you insert it into the chassis.! WARNING: When inserting modules into the chassis, slide them gently, not forcefully. Excessive force may cause the modules to be seated improperly in the chassis, and result in possible damage to the module or the chassis. Install or remove modules one at a time. Doing this aids in preventing the PSAX system from indicating any erroneous failure messages, and allows the PSAX system time to reinitialize and display the accurate configuration of the module that is inserted. Begin 1 Remove the module from its box and ESD protective bag only when you are ready to install it. Be sure to save the box and the ESD bag to ship the module in the future if needed. 2 Open the ejector handle at the top of the module faceplate, and slide the module into an available slot. Be sure to position the module with the ejector handle near the top edge of the chassis opening on the PSAX 1250, PSAX 2300, and PSAX 4500 chassis. Position the module horizontally in the PSAX 1000 chassis with the ejector handle to the left. 3 Press the ejector handle until it snaps firmly against the faceplate, and verify that the module is secure in its slot. 4 Engage the locking tab based on the PSAX chassis in use as follows: For the PSAX 1000 chassis, insert a flathead screwdriver into the screwdriver slot of the locking tab, and slide the locking tab to the right (see Figure 2). For the PSAX 1250 chassis, the locking tab is not used. Skip this step and continue with the procedure. For the PSAX 2300 or the PSAX 4500 chassis, insert a flathead screwdriver into the screwdriver slot of the locking tab, and slide the locking tab down and into the locking tab slot (see Figure 3). 5 Locking Tab (Unlocked) Screwdriver Slot Locking Tab (Locked) Figure 2. Engaging the Module Locking Tab on the PSAX 1000 Chassis 4 5 For new installations, run the cabling through a cable management system that provides the necessary connector/cable strain relief to prevent damage to the I/O module connectors.! WARNING: To prevent any damage to the I/O module connectors, do not allow network cables to hang unaided from the connectors. Use standard cable installation procedures to run and secure the network cables through an appropriate cable management system before connecting the cables to the I/O modules. End Figure 3. 6 Verifying the Initial Startup After you insert the 2-Port DS3 ATM module into the chassis, observe the LED status indicators as described in Table 3. If the status indicators do not appear to function properly, refer to Troubleshooting the Installation on page 8. Table 3. LED Indicators for the 2-Port DS3 ATM Module LED FAIL (red) ACTIVE (green) LOS (Loss of Signal) (yellow) Initial Power-On No Configured Ports One or More Configured Ports Lights briefly * Not lit Lights only when the module is not functioning Lights briefly * Not lit Lights only when the module is functioning properly Lights briefly Module Status No Cable on Port Lights Cable on Port Does not light if signal is being received. Lights if signal is missing. * After power is initially applied to the system and the system boot is complete, the FAIL and ACTIVE LEDs indicate whether the module has no configured ports (red), or one or more configured ports (green). After power is initially applied to the system and the system boot is complete, the LOS LED indicates whether the port has a cable connected to it. Removing the Module Perform the following procedure to remove the module. Read the PacketStar PSAX Multiservice Media Gateway Safety Guidelines, which accompanies this product, before proceeding.! WARNING: Be sure to use the ejector handles during installation and removal of a PSAX module. Removing an I/O Module or a CPU2 Module Begin 1 Disconnect the cables from the module port (or ports). 2 Disengage the locking tab based on the PSAX chassis as follows: For the PSAX 1000 chassis, insert a flathead screwdriver into the screwdriver slot of the locking tab, and slide the locking tab to the left (see Figure 4). For the PSAX 1250 chassis, the locking tab is not used. Skip this step and continue the procedure. Page 6 of 8 2-Port DS3 ATM Module Description and Technical Specifications
7 For the PSAX 2300 or the PSAX 4500 chassis, insert a flathead screwdriver into the screwdriver slot of the locking tab, and slide the locking tab up and out of the locking tab slot (see Figure 5). 3 Pull backward on the ejector handle until the module is released from the midplane/backplane. Locking Tab (Unlocked) Screwdriver Slot Locking Tab (Locked) Figure 4. Locking Tab on the Module, on the PSAX 1000 Chassis 4 Figure 5. Locking Tab on the Module (Shown in a PSAX 4500 Chassis) 4 Remove the module from the chassis. 5 Put the module in its ESD bag, close the bag, and place the module in its original shipping box. 6 If another module is not being immediately inserted into the empty slot, insert a blank faceplate module into the slot to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) and maintain proper air flow inside the chassis. 2-Port DS3 ATM Module Description and Technical Specifications Page 7 of 8
